Woodson Park in Oklahoma City has 14 new trees, but don’t blame the Thunder if they were planted at a slight angle.

About 30 wind-swept Thunder executives and staff, plus Rumble, the Thunder Girls and the Thunder Drummers, fought intense springtime gusts to kick off Thunder Green Week, presented by Hertz, with a ceremony marking the team’s adoption of Woodson Park.

“We are constantly seeking new ways to strengthen our team’s ties to the community, and adopting this park seemed like a natural fit,” said Thunder Vice President Dan Mahoney. “Not only is it a beautiful space in the middle of the city, but it’s also a place where families can go to play and enjoy time together.”

Joining the Thunder at the adoption ceremony were representatives from OKC Beautiful, which administers the city’s park-adoption program, and from Hertz, which provided the new trees for the park. Teams of Thunder staff members, from vice presidents to interns, combed the park for litter before planting the trees – one for every player on the Thunder roster.

With the park adoption, the team is charged with general maintenance and clean-up of the park grounds, which include a playground, picnic areas, baseball fields and fitness trails.

In addition to the Woodson Park clean-up, the Thunder will mark NBA Green Week with green giveaways at upcoming home games, including a reusable Hertz tote on Wednesday, April 6 and MidFirst tumblers on Friday, April 8. The team is also highlighting green tips for fans online and during games and is stepping up efforts to make the front office more environmentally conscious.

“The Thunder is proud to participate in NBA Green Week,” said Thunder Director of Community Relations Christine Berney. “This organization strives to lead by example when it comes to conservation and beautification. We are grateful to all of the Oklahoma City agencies and companies who share our commitment, and we encourage our fans to do the same.”
