The Oklahoma City Thunder is excited to bring students and schools the opportunity to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee through the Thunder Regional Spelling Bee, presented by American Fidelity Assurance Company.
Schools will have the opportunity to host local spelling bee competitions and the 25 top-scoring champions will advance to compete in the Thunder Regional Spelling Bee for a chance to attend the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
The bee provides multiple academic, literacy and lifeskill benefits:
- Improve spelling, increase vocabulary, learn concepts to develop correct English usage
- Opportunity for development of self-confidence, responsibility and autonomy
- Valuable experience in developing the necessary skills for success in public speaking, language comprehension, improved study techniques and new concepts mastery

What grade levels are able to participate in the Spelling Bee?
K-8 graders.
How is the $175 participation fee used?
This fee goes directly to the Scripps National Spelling Bee to sustain the Bee. Fees are used for staff support, printing and mailing costs, and to implement the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
Is there a separate registration for Scripps National Spelling Bee and the Thunder Regional Spelling Bee?
No, enrolling your school at www.spellingbee.com/enrollment will register your school completely.
How will the students who are selected to compete in the Thunder Regional Spelling Bee be determined?
The 25 top-placing students determined through the online testing platform will advance to the Thunder Regional Spelling Bee.
How will I know what words to use at my school’s spelling bee?
Scripps National Spelling Bee will mail your school’s spelling bee representative a list of words prior to your school’s bee.
Is there a plan in case COVID-19 affects the 2022 bees?
Yes. While we remain hopeful that the Bee will take place in person, Scripps has provided guidance on how to host your bee virtually. On the website registered schools can find an online platform to host their Bees.
