The Philadelphia 76ers honored Allen Iverson on April 12, 2024 with a sculpture unveiling ceremony on Legends Walk at the Penn Medicine Philadelphia 76ers Training Complex.

Iverson, former NBA MVP and 11-time NBA All-Star, is regarded as one of the best scorers the NBA has ever seen.

"I love these people and they love me back. They honor the fact that I gave everything I had, night in and night out. And I loved the fact that they supported me through all these years."

On how he hopes his sculpture inspires those who walk by it at the Penn Medicine Philadelphia 76ers Training Complex:

"Just playing every game like it's your last. That was always my motto... If I'm on the court, there was no reason not to play that game like it was my last."

"I see the confidence level. The confidence in himself and knowing that he can do it. He put in the work to become the Tyrese Maxey that he is now. I love watching him play, I cheer for him - I'm always going to be a Sixer. That's who I am. I live this... When I'm rooting for them, it's a feeling as if I was still playing for us."

"I'm a little older now. I walk through airports or go different places and people look at me - and they don't know my name - but they know 'You coached Allen.' And that really hits you.

"The impact he's had on our sport, on young kids, it's just amazing. Philly's different. The basketball culture here is second to none."

Allen Iverson Sculpture Unveiling Ceremony at 76ers Legends Walk

PHILADELPHIA, PA – March 30, 2023 — The Philadelphia 76ers and ESF Camps & Experiences, a national leader in the delivery of award-winning camps, announced today details for their very first 76ers Fantasy Camp for adults. The camp is scheduled to take place August 25-27 at the Philadelphia 76ers Training Complex in Camden, NJ.

A one-of-a-kind NBA experience, 76ers Fantasy Camp, will give the ultimate adult 76ers fan a chance to put on an authentic uniform and play games coached and managed by 76ers legends Allen Iverson and World B. Free, and former 76ers Head Coach Jim Lynam. Adults ages 30 and older can play, train and compete like an NBA star. Participants will work on ball-handling, passing, offense, shooting and rebounding skills to advance their game. While focusing on key basketball skills and fundamentals, campers will also play games with 76ers legends, coaches and other celebrities.

ESF Camps and Philadelphia 76ers Announce Details for First 76ers Fantasy Basketball Camp

Six times in Sixers history, the franchise has survived a Game 7. Five of those occasions saw the club win and move on to face another tough playoff opponent, while the other saw coronation as NBA champions.

2001 Eastern Conference Semifinals: Philadelphia 76ers vs. Toronto Raptors

The last two Game 7 victories for the 76ers came in the 2001 playoffs. The Eastern Conference Semifinals that year against the Toronto Raptors was a memorable back and forth showcase for Allen Iverson and Vince Carter. Iverson averaged 33.7 points per game and had two 50-point games in the series, while Carter averaged 30.4 points and had a 50-point game of his own for the Raptors. In Game 7, though, the limelight fell on Toronto big man Antonio Davis (23 pts, 11-15 fg) and Sixth Man of the Year Aaron McKie (22 pts). The Sixers survived, 88-87, after a last-second Carter jumper missed its mark.

2001 Eastern Conference Finals: Philadelphia 76ers vs. Milwaukee Bucks

Moving on to the 2001 Eastern Conference Finals, the Sixers had an easier Game 7 versus the Milwaukee Bucks. Now it was not an easy series, but the climactic seventh game was the easiest win for either team all series, as the 76ers prevailed, 108-91. Iverson scorched Milwaukee for 44 points while Dikembe Mutombo controlled the interior with 23 points, 19 rebounds, and seven blocks.

1982 Eastern Conference Finals: Philadelphia 76ers vs. Boston Celtics

Next we jump back another two decades to the early 1980s.

In 1982, Andrew Toney had the game of his career as the team eliminated the Celtics in the Boston Garden. The Boston Strangler, as Toney was known, had 34 points on 14-for-23 shooting. Lost a bit in Toney’s shine was Julius Erving having a commanding performance himself: 29 points, five assists, three steals, and three blocks. The 120-106 victory sent the Sixers onward to the 1982 NBA Finals.

1981 Eastern Conference Semifinals: Philadelphia 76ers vs. Milwaukee Bucks

The year before in 1981, the Sixers and Bucks had another classic series. This Game 7 was a whole lot closer than the one in 2001. Bucks forward Marques Johnson played like a man possessed as he racked up 36 points on 16-25 FGs and also corralled nine rebounds. Center Bob Lanier was a titan as well with 24 points on 9-for-12 field goals. Milwaukee’s frontcourt brawn was matched by the agility of Erving and Bobby Jones. Doctor J didn’t shoot extremely well (just 11-26 fg), but he finished with 28 points while swatting six Milwaukee shots. Coming off the bench, Jones delivered 21 points on 5-for-8 shooting and 11-for-12 on free throws. Their efforts were just enough to squeeze out a 99-98 win to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals.

1977 Eastern Conference Semifinals: Philadelphia 76ers vs. Boston Celtics

In 1977, the Sixers and Celtics had another Game 7 this time in the ECSF. And this game was not for anyone who likes shotmaking. This was a brutal contest that saw both teams shoot horrifically. The Celtics finished 30% from the field while the Sixers were barely better at 33%.

Boston held the edge on the boards (65-53) thanks to Dave Cowens grabbing an impressive 27 rebounds. However, Philadelphia got the victory thanks to some sharp free-throw shooting. The team finished 23-for-26 (89%) from the line led by World B. Free’s perfect 7-for-7 performance. Meanwhile Boston was a miserable 23-for-35 (66%). It made the difference in the 83-77 Sixers win.

1955 NBA Finals: Syracuse Nationals vs. Fort Wayne Pistons

Lastly we have the first Game 7 victory in franchise history and it’s certainly the grandest.

In the 1955 NBA Finals, the Syracuse Nationals were down 3-2 in the series to the Fort Wayne Pistons. Dolph Schayes’ 28 points and 12 boards delivered a 109-104 win in Game 6. Then in Game 7, seven Nats players finished between 11 and 15 points. Guard George King was the leading man with 15 points. He was also the leading man in the final moments as he sank a free throw to put Syracuse ahead 92-91 and then on the game’s final play stole the ball from the Pistons to secure the NBA title.

If the past is any guide, winning Game 7 won’t be easy, but it can be done. Here’s hoping for that seventh Game 7 victory.

A decade into retirement, Allen Iverson still dreams, especially whenever the 76ers drop a new uniform.

How would he do it? What accessories would he wear?

The Hall of Famer admits he gets jealous.

"I envision having the jersey with my number on it, then just think about the colorwave of sneakers, headbands, and sleeves," Iverson said in a recent interview. "Just kid stuff - being an athlete and thinking about how you would attack that uniform with your style. I still get a kick out of it. I love when we look good out there."

This time around, Iverson didn't have to do much wondering. He was part of his old team's latest jersey launch, and rightfully so.

The Sixers' 2020-21 City Edition uniform, unveiled Tuesday and featuring black as its primary color, makes an unmistakable nod to the franchise's iconic Iverson-era road jerseys, which were sunsetted 11 years ago. 

Other noteworthy touches to the design of the Sixers' second-ever black uniform include the club's classic red, white, and blue colorway, and a two-tone silhouette of Philadelphia's signature Boathouse Row landmark.

During a photo shoot for the Sixers' new City Edition uniform, Iverson waxed nostalgic. 

"I always liked wearing black because that was basically my style," he said.

The Sixers' initial foray into black came during the 1997-98 season, Iverson's second in the NBA.

The following year, he led the Sixers back to the postseason for the first time in nearly a decade. 

As much as Iverson's transcendent performance on the court became symbolic of the Sixers' success, so too did the black uniforms. 

For a trendsetter like Iverson, the fit was perfect. 

"I was just happy to be a part of it knowing it had never been done before and we were the first squad that wore them and presented them to the world. I thought it was cool."

The last time the Sixers donned black? 2009, when current general manager Elton Brand was still an active player, and Ben Simmons was just 13 years old. 

The latter not only helped the Sixers with Tuesday's design, but its reveal as well.

Iverson is eager to see a new generation of Sixers wear the color that became so defining for him and his teammates. He said it's like "passing the baton."

On June 26, 1996, Allen Iverson was drafted first overall by the Philadelphia 76ers.

Iverson joined the Sixers following two impressive seasons at Georgetown University, averaging 23.0 points, 3.6 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 3.2 steals per game.

During his college career, Iverson won Big East Rookie of the Year, became a First Team All-American, and won Big East Defensive Player of the Year in each of his two seasons.

Iverson wasted no time making a splash on the NBA stage, averaging 23.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, 7.5 assists, and 2.1 steals per game in his debut season. For his efforts, he was named NBA Rookie of the Year. 

Over his 12-season NBA career, Iverson earned 11 All-Star nods, and won the league scoring title four times.

After his retirement in 2010, The Answer was enshrined in the Hall of Fame in 2016. His no. 3 flies from the rafters of The Center.

On this date in 2001, Allen Iverson was well on his way to a historic playoff run.

Iverson scored 52 points in the 76ers’ May 16 matchup with the Toronto Raptors in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

The Sixer legend made history in Game 5, becoming just the second player in NBA history to score at least 50 points twice in the same series (Iverson tallied 54 in Game 2).

The Sixers won Game 5, 121-88, to take a 3-2 lead in the series. The Sixers would ultimately advance to the Conference Finals by winning Game 7 on May 20.

Iverson scored 236 points in the Conference Semifinal series alone, shooting 40.4% from the field, and averaging a series-high 33.7 points per game. Vince Carter led the way for Toronto, averaging 30.4 points per game.

Iverson went on to lead the field in scoring in the 2001 playoffs, finishing with 723 points.
