The Philadelphia 76ers honored Allen Iverson on April 12, 2024 with a sculpture unveiling ceremony on Legends Walk at the Penn Medicine Philadelphia 76ers Training Complex.

Iverson, former NBA MVP and 11-time NBA All-Star, is regarded as one of the best scorers the NBA has ever seen.

On how he hopes his sculpture inspires those who walk by it at the Penn Medicine Philadelphia 76ers Training Complex:

"Just playing every game like it's your last. That was always my motto... If I'm on the court, there was no reason not to play that game like it was my last."

"I see the confidence level. The confidence in himself and knowing that he can do it. He put in the work to become the Tyrese Maxey that he is now. I love watching him play, I cheer for him - I'm always going to be a Sixer. That's who I am. I live this... When I'm rooting for them, it's a feeling as if I was still playing for us."

"I'm a little older now. I walk through airports or go different places and people look at me - and they don't know my name - but they know 'You coached Allen.' And that really hits you.

"The impact he's had on our sport, on young kids, it's just amazing. Philly's different. The basketball culture here is second to none."

SCULPTURE UNVEIL SLATED FOR FRIDAY, APRIL 12, 2024

PHILADELPHIA – MARCH 1, 2024 – The Philadelphia 76ers will host a sculpture unveiling ceremony honoring Allen Iverson on Friday, April 12 at Penn Medicine Philadelphia 76ers Training Complex. As one of the most decorated athletes ever to play for the organization, Iverson was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016 and selected as the NBA’s Most Valuable Player in 2001. This announcement comes on the 10th anniversary of Iverson’s No. 3 being retired by the franchise.

Named the NBA’s Rookie of the Year in 1997, Iverson spent his first 12 NBA seasons with Philadelphia, after the franchise selected him with the No. 1 overall pick in the 1996 NBA Draft. The 15-year pro was named an All-Star 11 times, received seven All-NBA selections, was a four-time NBA scoring champion, and led the league in steals on three occasions. Iverson, a member of the NBA 75th Anniversary Team, returned to play his final NBA season with the 76ers in 2010.

During his MVP season in 2000-01, Iverson averaged 31.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists, and 2.5 steals in 41.9 minutes per game, leading the NBA in both points and steals per game. Iverson has the ninth-highest scoring average in league history (26.7) and owns the third-highest scoring average in playoff history (29.7), trailing only Hall of Famer Michael Jordan and Dallas’ Luka Dončić. He led the league in steals in three consecutive seasons (2000-03) and ranks eighth in NBA history in steals per game (2.17).

Throughout Iverson’s illustrious career with the 76ers, he helped the team reach the playoffs six times, including an NBA Finals appearance in 2001. During his time with the franchise, he tallied 27.6 points, 3.9 rebounds, 6.3 assists, and 2.3 steals in 41.4 minutes per game.

Iverson was named an NBA All-Star in seven straight seasons from 2000-06 while being named the All-Star Game Most Valuable Player in both 2001 and 2005.

One of the most iconic 76ers of all-time, Iverson ranks in the top five in franchise history in total three-pointers made (first), points (second), steals (second), free throws made (second), minutes played (second), field goals made (third), and assists (third). His total points (19,931) as a 76er are second only to Hall of Famer Hal Greer (21,586). In 1996-97, he set rookie franchise records in total points (1,787), field goals made (625), and three-point field goals (155). Iverson also holds the franchise record for all-time 30-point games (303) and 40-point games (76) while ranking second in all-time 50-point games (10), behind only Wilt Chamberlain (11).

Iverson’s sculpture will join fellow 76ers legends Charles Barkley, Wilt Chamberlain, Maurice Cheeks, Billy Cunningham, Julius Erving, Hal Greer, Bobby Jones, Moses Malone, and Dolph Schayes along 76ers Legends Walk at the Penn Medicine Philadelphia 76ers Training Complex.

“It’s always an honor to contribute to 76ers Legends Walk and continually help bring history to life for such a storied franchise,” sculptor Chad Fisher said. “Allen Iverson was a game-changer, a true 76er who every Philadelphian worshipped, and I’m thrilled to unveil a sculpture of the MVP.”

Fisher has created the nine sculptures that currently stand on Legends Walk, honoring some of the 76ers greatest legends. Iverson will be his 10th. A native to the area, Fisher’s work extends far beyond Pennsylvania. He created multiple sculptures for the Chicago Bears and has been recognized as an ARC Living Master Artist, an elected member of The National Sculpture Society,

After Joel Embiid scored a then-career-high 59 points against the Utah Jazz in November 2022, he joked that he would tell his young son Arthur that it was a 60-point quadruple-double instead of his actual 59 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists, and seven blocks.

One wonders what he might tell Arthur now.

Hours after being named Eastern Conference Player of the Week for the third time already this season, the reigning NBA MVP scored a 76ers franchise-record 70 points against the San Antonio Spurs on Monday, January 22, 2024.

“It was great,” Embiid said after breaking the record previously held by Wilt Chamberlain and his 68 points. “Obviously, Wilt accomplished a lot of things as far as everything - the history of this league, and basketball in general. To be in the same conversation, that’s pretty cool.”

76ers Head Coach Nick Nurse acknowledged that these are some difficult record books to crack:

“The history here and some of the unbelievable players that have been here over the whole history of the franchise, that’s probably a more meaningful and tougher record to have… It’s really special.”

Coincidentally, Kobe Bryant - the man Embiid credited postgame as the reason why he even started playing basketball - delivered his historic 81-point game 18 years ago to the day.

“That was my favorite player,” Embiid said.

For many in the sellout crowd of 20,511 on Monday night, Embiid is their favorite player. But six days after he out-dueled Denver’s Nikola Jokić in the same building, much of the fanfare focused on both players in the center jump circle once again.

The Spurs and their 20-year-old French phenom Victor Wembenyama started well, earning a 14-5 lead behind a perfect 4-for-4 shooting effort from deep, including a pair of threes from the 7-foot-4 No. 1 overall pick.

Embiid, however, would lead the Sixers’ comeback charge to the tune of a first quarter career-high 24 points. By the 3:44 mark of the second quarter, the soon-to-be seven-time All-Star had extended his franchise-record streak for consecutive games with at least 30 points to 21 straight.

It was tough to tell, or in his words, hard to say.

“It was hard to say because obviously I came out hot,” said Embiid. “I had 24 in the first and then, in the second, I was kind of messing around. And then I had over 30 [34] by half and had a pretty good start to the third quarter.”

Three minutes into the third, Embiid tied Shaquille O’Neal for the sixth-most 40-point, 10-rebound games in NBA history with 43. And perhaps his most impressive play of the night was a pass. His no-look, wraparound pass to Kelly Oubre Jr. for an 84-72 lead was his third of what would be five assists on the evening. Consider his game-high 18 rebounds as well and Embiid is the only player in NBA history with at least 70 points, 15 rebounds, and five assists in a single game.

“They gave me a stat and I was actually surprised that he’s never done it. But it was just a great night. Had it going, I mentioned it a few times, a lot of my teammates are extremely unselfish, and they just kept giving me the ball, and I just finished it.”

The third quarter also saw Embiid break a tie with Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo for the most 50-point games this season (3), as well as match his own previous career-high of 59 points on what was remarkably his only 3-pointer of the game with 6.9 seconds left in the frame.

Twenty-thousand spectators delivered a standing ovation with 12 minutes still to go up on the board and the Sixers leading 104-89. Then, with the lead at 14 in the middle of the fourth quarter, Embiid re-entered the game to put the finishing touches on his masterpiece.

“MVP” chants showered Embiid moments later when he swished one free throw - and the second - for his first career 60-point game, and the first for any 76er since Allen Iverson in February 2005 against Orlando.

“I try to do it every single night on both ends of the floor.”

Maxey immediately passes the ball to Embiid, who races across half-court leading the Spurs by 13 and tied with Chamberlain at 68.

PHILADELPHIA – On Monday, March 20, when the 76ers host the Chicago Bulls, the team will celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the 1982-83 76ers Championship team, presented by Crypto.com. Players, coaches, and executive management from the 1982-83 team will be honored during a special halftime ceremony at center court. Current 76ers will pay homage to the team by wearing special 1982-83-themed “Fo’ Fo’ Fo’” warm-up shirts. “Fo’ Fo’ Fo’” refers to when Moses Malone predicted a full sweep of 12 straight wins in three playoff series.

In addition to the ceremony, the 1982-83 team will be invited to the Philadelphia 76ers Training Complex Monday morning to watch 76ers shootaround and engage with current 76ers players and coaches. Media will have the opportunity to speak with select members of the team following shootaround.

Unique in-arena programming and exclusive video content will play throughout the night as part of the fan experience, highlighting the team and its historic accomplishments. On the 11th anniversary of Wilt Chamberlain's passing, the Sixers Harvey Pollack Lists the Big Dipper's Most Unforgettable Performances

The news was as stunning and jarring as one of his typical NBA box scores. The most dominant player the NBA has ever seen died 11 years ago today.

Bill Russell may be considered the NBA's most influential player and Michael Jordan perhaps the greatest but what is indisputable: No one rewrote the record books like Wilt Chamberlain.

As former teammate Billy Cunningham once said, "The NBA Guide reads like Wilt's personal diary."

And Wilt's impact resonates to this day. Thirty seven years after he retired at the age of 37, Chamberlain's name appears in the NBA's record book a whopping 97 times.

When he retired following the 1972-73 season, it was 128 times.

On the 11th anniversary of his death, a man who was court side for many of Wilt's majestic performances weighs in on a daunting task: ranking Wilt's most memorable achievements.

Harvey Pollack, the Sixers Director of Statistical Information, joined the NBA in 1946-47, keeping statistics for all of the Warriors and Sixers home games. You can spot Harvey court side this season, jotting down stats.

Here are Pollack's most memorable Wilt games he's seen in person.

1.Wilt's 100-point game (vs. New York Knicks, March 2, 1962, Hershey, Pa.)

Harvey's Take: Wilt's 100-point game was part of his transcendent season in 1961-62 where he averaged 50.4 points and played all but eight possible minutes for the Philadelphia Warriors  (3,882 of a possible 3,890).

Wilt actually averaged 48.5 minutes per game that season.

Against the Knicks, Wilt took 63 of the team's 115 field goal attempts and made 36 of them. The next highest field goal attempt number on the Warriors was Paul Arizin, who had 18.

Perhaps most impressive was Wilt's proficiency from the free throw line that game. A career 51 percent free throw shooter, Wilt made 28 of 32 attempts.

When someone asked Wilt to explain why he did so well from the line, he responded: "I can't."

We knew something big was in store because earlier that day, Wilt lit up the arcade in Hershey, taking on all comers and knocking 'em down whether it was shooting clay pigeons or pinball.

I'm glad I wrote 100 on a piece of paper for Wilt to hold up after the game for The Associated Press photographer because otherwise, I'm not so sure people to this day would believe he actually scored 100.

2. 55 rebounds vs. Bill Russell (vs. Boston Celtics, 11/24/60)

Harvey's Take: Wilt and Russell played against each other 142 times throughout their careers. In those head-to-head matchups, Wilt averaged 28.7 points and 28.7 rebounds while Russell posted averages of 14.5 and 23.7.

I've had never seen Russell more distraught than that game when Wilt grabbed 55 rebounds. Wilt dominated the paint, taking everything in sight.

That record still stands to this day and no one will come near it.

Not to be overlooked but Wilt also scored 34 points.

3. 78 point Game (vs. Los Angeles Lakers, Dec. 8, 1961)

Harvey's Take: Look up in the NBA Guide and you'll find Wilt has four of the top highest single-game performances. One of my favorites was when he scored 78 points against the Lakers in a triple overtime game.

Little did we know that this game would be a precursor to his 100-point game only a few months later.

It was unimaginable to think someone could score 100 points in a single game. Even after Wilt scored 78, no one was thinking about 100.

4. 73 & 62 on Back-to-Back Nights (vs. Chicago Bulls, Boston Celtics, January 13 & 14, 1962)

Harvey's Take: Wilt scored 135 points in a 24 hour span -- 73 against the Bulls and 62 points against the Celtics.

It would take 22 years for someone to score 50 or more points on consecutive nights. Bernard King did it back to back 50s -- versus San Antonio and Dallas in 1984.

Harvey's Take: To give you some perspective, Wilt scored 50 or more points 118 times in his illustrious career. The second highest total is Michael Jordan with 31.

I traveled with the Warriors during these peak years when Wilt was dropping 50 or more points. Forty five of those came in the 1961-62 season when he averaged 50.4 points.

6. Wilt goes 18 for 18 from the field (vs. Baltimore, February 24, 1967)

Harvey's Take: Even though the game was in Pittsburgh, it was considered a Sixers home game and Wilt treated the fans to an unforgettable performance.

Wilt also had games of 15 and 16 field goals without a miss.

7. Wilt's Triple Double Double: The Only One in NBA History (vs. Detroit Pistons, Feb. 2, 1968)

Harvey's Take: Everyone makes a big fuss out of a triple double. How about a triple double double! Wilt's line from that game 22 points, 25 rebounds and 21 assists against the Pistons.

The 21 assists was a Sixers single-game assist mark for many years. Maurice Cheeks eventually tied it.

Wilt was the only player to play all 48 minutes in that game.

8. Wilt Scores 58 as a Rookie (vs. Detroit Pistons, Jan. 25, 1960)

Harvey's Take: Another away home game, this time it took place in Bethlehem, Pa. Wilt scores 58 points and a little less than a month later he did it in New York versus the Knicks.

In Wilt's rookie season, he not only led the league in scoring (37.6) and rebounds (27) but also in minutes per game (46.4)

9. 50 or More Points in Seven Straight Games (Dec. 16 to Dec. 29, 1961)

Harvey's Take: I was at every one of those games and no matter what defenses they threw at Wilt, he either willed his way to the basket or dominated from mid range. It was one of many incredible scoring runs I've seen from Wilt.

10. 220 Most rebounds in a 7-Game Playoff Series (1965 Eastern Division Finals)

Harvey's Take: Bill Russell is considered, by many as the greatest defensive player in the game. Well, in a seven-game series versus Russell,  Wilt averaged nearly 29 rebounds per game against him and in the final Game 7, grabbed his 200th of the series.

The Sixers lost Game 7 on Sam Jones shot, 110-109.

11. 21 Assists in Game (vs. Detroit Pistons, Feb. 2, 1969)

Harvey's Take: Often overlooked in the enormity of Wilt's scoring records was his ability as a passer. Twenty one assists in a game is simply unheard of for a center.

Dave DeBusschere, Terry Dischinger, Joe Strawder all tried to stop Wilt that game and it was pointless. Wilt did what he wanted, when he wanted.

People forget, Wilt led the NBA in total assists in the 1967-68 season. Imagine any center today leading the NBA in assists.

Alex Hannum, the great Sixers coach told Wilt that the team didn't need him to dominate with his scoring but to get his teammates more involved. Wilt adjusted his game and sure enough, led the league in assists.
