Extending a partnership to protect public health and safety in the Sacramento region, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services and the Sacramento Kings today announced the lease for the Sleep Train Arena and practice facility which housed Alternate Care Facilities have been amended by reducing the rental rate from $500,000 per month to no cost.

The arena, which the state opened in April for medical surge capacity in the region, will remain under state control through October 31.

With this agreement now in place and local hospitals no longer facing an immediate threat of being overwhelmed by COVID-19, the arena will be placed in a warm shutdown status effective the end of May. The arena site will then remain available through the Fall to support hospital surge capacity should there be a need. The practice facility will continue to remain operational to support COVID-19 patients through at least June 30.

The Sleep Train Arena Alternate Care Facility was operationalized in record time in April to provide up to 400 beds and medical care as part of a statewide effort to expand hospital capacity and relieve projected pressure on the health care delivery system.

“I am grateful to the Kings for their continued partnership. Maintaining this facility allows the state and the region flexibility to safeguard the health and safety of the entire Northern Sacramento Valley,” said Cal OES Director Mark Ghilarducci.

“Governor Newsom’s a leadership has helped to slow the spread of COVID-19 and save lives in Sacramento and across California,” said the Sacramento Kings. “Today’s announcement represents the progress we have all made together to flatten the curve. We remain committed to continuing to use our platform for good and to help support the needs of our community.”

When the facility was announced in April, the team committed to donate $250,000 to support area community organizations providing essential services and supplies to families and individuals in need along with the donation of 100,000 non-medical masks to local front-line workers.

Today, the Sacramento Kings announced the first group of organization recipients of the $250,000 committed to help provide essential services and supplies to those in need during the COVID-19 crisis. Funding will go to regional nonprofit organizations that are serving diverse and vulnerable populations and working to address three priority areas of need including shelter and housing services for families and youth, food security, and educational and career development services.

“Our hearts go out to the hardest hit among us during this unprecedented crisis. COVID-19 is placing an enormous demand on organizations serving our community, youth, and families and we are committed to helping them,” said Sacramento Kings President of Business Operations John Rinehart. “Now, more than ever, the Kings are proud to provide support to critical nonprofits doing essential work across the region, including housing, food security, and education and career development services.”

Following its announcement of their $250,000 commitment to community organizations impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Kings connected with local nonprofits and coalitions to hear the community’s needs and identify organizations doing essential work across the region.

Through this process, the Kings identified twelve recipients that will each receive a portion of the $200,000 donation focused in the categories listed below. The remaining $50,000 in funding will be distributed and announced at a later date to support ongoing recovery efforts as this crisis will continue to impact the region for months to come.

Housing Services for Families and YouthFunding will be given to organizations that provide shelter and housing services for families and youth, including the Sacramento LGBTQ Community Center, WEAVE and the Yolo Crisis Nursery. These organizations are providing housing and wraparound services for at-risk populations.

Food SecurityAdditionally, funding will be donated to organizations that address food security, including Family Meal, La Familia Counseling Center, My Sister’s House, Salvation Army and Wellspring Women’s Center. These funds will be used to support their efforts to continue to provide food services for families, youth and seniors.

Educational and Career Development ServicesFunding will also be given to educational, career development and service-focused organizations, including Food Literacy Center, JUMA and Square Root Academy to continue their efforts of encouraging the advancement of the next generation of leaders and connecting with students during distance learning. These organizations are shifting from on-the-job and hands-on learning to virtual learning techniques and strategies.

Lastly, funding will be directed to Donate4Sacramento, a COVID-19 regional response fund partnering with community organizations, to support qualified low-income households whose lives have been disrupted by the outbreak with much needed financial resources.

This donation is part of the team’s larger “In This Together” initiative to help support the community in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Through the initiative, Kings players Harrison Barnes, Bogdan Bogdanovic, Yogi Ferrell, De’Aaron Fox, Richaun Holmes and Cory Joseph have donated thousands of meals to vulnerable families and children regionally. In April, the Kings announced a donation of 100,000 masks to local frontline workers and in March, the Kings joined forces with Legends Hospitality to donate nearly 5,000 pounds of prepared and perishable food to the Sacramento Food Bank and the Sacramento County Office of Education to help feed individuals in need and families impacted by school closures.

Sacramento Kings Support Community Organizations Providing Essential Services to Region During COVID-19 Pandemic

Sacramento Kings guard Yogi Ferrell is donating hundreds of meals and servings of ice cream to foster youth residing at Sacramento Children’s Home and the organization’s staff who are facing currently increased needs due to the COVID-19 health crisis. With his donation, Ferrell is also supporting several local restaurants and small businesses navigating this unprecedented time.

“The Sacramento Children’s Home is such an incredible organization in our community that is also very special to me, so I am humbled to have this opportunity to help out the kids and staff there,” said Ferrell. “During these times, it is important we continue to support and look for ways we can lift one another up.”

Comforting meals are being prepared fresh and delivered by local restaurants El Novillero, Happy Takeout, Pangaea Bier Café and Roma’s Pizzeria. Ferrell is also teaming with Häagen-Dazs, located in DOCO (Downtown Commons), to provide individual servings of ice cream for the children and staff as the Sacramento weather continues to heat up.

Ferrell has long held a fond affinity for the Sacramento Children’s Home throughout his Kings career as he continues to step up and support the organization. During the holidays earlier this season, Ferrell and the Sacramento Kings Foundation hosted a festive party for the youth as part of the team’s 18th Season of Doing Good. Yogi and the Kings have also contributed to recent efforts to redesign and enhance areas throughout the home, including upgrades to the gym and living spaces.

Since 1867, the Sacramento Children’s Home has been committed to providing high-quality care to the Sacramento region’s most vulnerable children and families. From providing crisis support for families with infants and toddlers to providing short-term residential care to foster youth who have suffered trauma, Sacramento Children’s Home services focus on child abuse prevention, intervention and mental health treatment for the area’s most at-risk children and families.

Sacramento is always sporting the freshest looks, and the Worldwide Leader has taken notice.

In a ranking of the Top 74 jerseys in NBA history conducted by ESPN experts, Sactown can be found three times on the list.

At No. 63 comes the classic blue look donned from 1972-75 by the Kansas City Kings.

“The swooping underline and subtle crown accent atop the script ‘Kings’ font can still be seen throughout the franchise's identity, even well after the franchise moved to Sacramento,” said Nick DePaula.

Further down the list are two jerseys that’ll be familiar to fans, beginning at No. 36.

“With a revamped roster coming out of the league's lockout, the Kings donned vibrant purple alternates with glittering silver neckline accents that lined up well with their newfound national attention on nightly highlight shows,” DePaula described.

Last but certainly not least, the baby blue look that fans originally witnessed in 1985.

“When the Kings relocated from Kansas City to Sacramento in 1985,” said Aaron Dodson. “The franchise switched up its swag, changing the team's primary color from royal to baby blue as a new canvas for the scripted ‘Kings’ font.”

The Sacramento Kings practice facility located at Golden 1 Center will reopen to players for voluntary, individual workouts and treatment beginning on Monday, May 11 pursuant to the updated Sacramento County Public Health Order effective May 1 allowing non-contact recreational facilities to open and in accordance with the NBA’s updated basketball operations policies and procedures, including activities required to conform with social distancing requirements and appropriate disinfectant processes.

Per league policies, the team’s practice facility will be available for use by Kings players for workouts and treatment on a voluntary, individual basis only. The following policies and procedures to provide a controlled environment for players and other team employees will be in place until further notice:
