Although the 2023-24 NBA season ended earlier than the Jazz hoped it would, it just means that the most exciting part of the year has arrived early — the offseason. Armed with multiple first round picks and a deep desire to get better this summer and eventually bring a title to Utah, the Jazz have positioned themselves to make any move they desire.

Before breaking down how big of an offseason this could be, it's time to reflect on the previous season. How good were the rookies? What are the plans for the future? Is Lauri Markkanen on board with what's going on? JP Chunga (Jazz Podcast Host) and myself (Jazz Digital Content Writer) are here to answer your Jazz questions — and much more.

Question: Keyonte was really good for the season, but is there a reason to be concerned about his struggling shooting splits? | Zoe M. — Park City, UTChunga: It’s natural for rookies to be inefficient. This is their first time playing against high level competition. What’s most important is how confident Keyonte got using his shot to set up his drive. He had five games where he attempted 10+ threes, all of which occurred in the second half of the season. That can open up his drive once opponents respect it. 

Question: How should the fanbase feel about how the season ended? I have no idea what I’m going through trying to figure it out. | Rob P. — Millcreek, UTKostecka: I understand the frustration because nobody wants to lose, especially a fanbase as passionate and knowledgeable as Jazz Nation. But there are a lot more positives to take away than negatives. All three rookies showed flashes of being legit NBA players… and then some. Utah has so many picks that any big move that happens in the offseason will have to go through them. The rebuild wasn’t going to be a 1-or-2 year deal, it was always going to take time… but now comes the upswing part.

Question: Last year Walker was incredible… But what the heck happened this season? He looked like a totally different player. | Rochelle D. — Kanab, UTChunga: Expectations totally skew the way we think about things. I asked Will Hardy about Walker’s year, and he compared it to going .500. If you win the first two games and lose the last two, you’re still .500 but you feel differently about things. If you said Walker would be at this point when the team traded for him two years ago, you would’ve taken it. Walker dealt with injury this year. He still has so much room to improve on both ends of the floor. I know his inclusion with the Jazz’s summer league squad will go a long way in his development. 

Question: How do you think the rookies fared throughout the year? Is the front office happy with their performance/growth? | Steven T. — Reno, NVKostecka: To be expected, their respective performances were up and down. Keyonte established himself early during training camp and was a part of the rotation on opening night — eventually emerging as a starter. He had the biggest swings, but that was to be expected as his role expanded. Taylor and Brice really came on post trade deadline and showed legit NBA skills. There’s plenty of work to do for all three, but Will (Hardy) and Danny (Ainge) are pleased with their growth and have a busy summer planned for all three – which included playing in Summer League.

Question: I think the most obvious question to ask is what are Utah’s plans this summer? Are we going to “tank” again next year? Make a big trade for a star? What’s the goal? | Alex B. — Salt Lake City, UTChunga: Danny Ainge and Justin Zanik want to go big game hunting. The advantage this team has is the optionality of the offseason with picks and cap space. It really is a choose your own adventure book. The Jazz are in talent acquisition mode. They can be incredibly opportunistic. 

Question: From everything I’ve seen, it appears the Jazz see Lauri as a HUGE part of their future plans. Is he okay with the way the season ended? Do you think it’s more likely he gets a new contract with us or we trade him? | Nickey B. — Coeur d’ Alene, IDKostecka: I don’t think anyone in the organization is okay with how the season ended because they all want to win, and that includes Lauri — but that doesn’t mean that he can’t see the big picture. After speaking to him many times, I can say he’s very comfortable with the Jazz, loves the state, is fully on board with Utah’s plans, and wants to be here. As for what that brings for his future, only time will tell. 

Question: What happened at the end of the season? Why did Utah trade away Kelly (Olynyk), Simone (Fontecchio), and Ochai (Agbaji) when the team had a chance at the play-in? If the plan was to tank, why didn’t we do it earlier? | Michael B. — Brigham City, UTChunga: The trades offered ways to get more playing time for their rookies. They got to see how Taylor, Keyonte, and Brice react to the rigors of the NBA season. It wasn’t ideal with the number of games missed from other players on the roster. They’re young and suffered growing pains. The trades also gave opportunities to get into the back end of the draft. In the very deep Western Conference, those draft picks are the currency of hope.

Question: How do veterans like John Collins, Jordan Clarkson, Kris Dunn, and Collin Sexton fit into next year and the overall timeline of the Jazz? | Katelyn B. — Whitefish, MTKostecka: This is tough because the Jazz are in such a transitive state that anything can happen. I will say the front office was very pleased with how all four played this year. What that means for them moving forward, who knows. The NBA is a business and the ultimate goal is to bring a title to the state, so I’m guessing the front office will do what needs to be done to achieve that goal. 

Question: If you have one piece of advice to give Jazz Nation that should give us hope for the future, what would it be? | Ericka W. — Bountiful, UTChunga: These guys have done it before. Ainge and Zanik have built successful teams. They will figure it out soon enough. Ryan Smith is incredibly committed to the success of basketball in this state (see Kevin Young). Hardy remains an impressive young coach who thinks of offensive basketball in creative ways. That triad from ownership to front office to coach is aligned on the direction of this program. 

Question: Not a Jazz question necessarily (and an Arizona local)… But with the news of an NHL team coming to SLC in October, how does the team/organization feel about it? | Robert G. — Scottsdale, AZKostecka: I can tell you that excitement within the organization and that state wouldn’t register on the Richter scale – it doesn’t go that high. Everyone is beyond stoked about Salt Lake City and the state having a hockey team… and the fan reaction has been unbelievable. I feel for the fans in Arizona, that’s tough — but the team is going to be well received and accepted here.

With just under two weeks before the Feb. 8 trade deadline — and the due date for my wife and our first born — the Jazz remain one of the most interesting and fluid teams in the league.

Armed with a treasure trove of draft picks and expiring contracts, Utah has the necessary ammo to make a massive splash and a huge move. But they also have numerous players on great contracts with skillsets capable of taking teams to the next level.

With that being said, what will the Jazz do? Will they be buyers or sellers? What's the market like? JP Chunga (Jazz Podcast Host) and myself (Jazz Digital Content Writer) are here to answer your Jazz questions — and much more.

Question: I’ll ask the question EVERYBODY in Jazz Nation wants to ask… are the Jazz going to make a move? | Andy C. — Tooele, UTChunga: With the spot they’re in, Utah has a lot of options. 14 first round picks keeps them in conversations for talent acquisition. Currently in the play-in race, they’ll have plenty of opportunities to get involved in deals.

Question: If the Jazz do make a move, who do you think is most likely to be traded? | Anaiah H. — Boise, IDKostecka: It seems as if almost every player in Utah’s rotation has been mentioned in some trade scenario over the past month, but that doesn’t mean much to be honest. I think Utah’s most valuable assets are Kelly Olynyk, Jordan Clarkson and Talen Horton-Tucker. Clarkson and Olynyk’s skillsets could immediately help contenders take the next step, while THT and Olynyk are both on expiring contracts.

Question: What’s the difference for Utah between last season’s trade deadline and this year’s? | Oscar S. — Whitefish, MTChunga: It was the first year of the pivot and this year there’s a clear indication of some building blocks. Nobody could’ve imagined Lauri Markkanen to be an All-Star, and his follow up has been tremendous. Last season the Jazz started hot and then cooled off. This year, it was the opposite. Clarkson has settled into a pivotal and impactful role off the bench with this group.

Question: Last year the Jazz traded Mike (sad), Vando, and Malik at the deadline and they struggled the rest of the year. Is that the plan this year also, or will they add someone to climb the standings? | Levi D. — Morgan, UTKostecka: This is the beauty of the Jazz, they can go in either direction and the results can be varied. They’ve proven to be one of the deepest teams in the league so they might be able to withstand losing a player or two — especially depending on who comes back their way. I’m not sure which direction they’ll go, but I’m willing to assume the Jazz will make a push for the postseason.

Question: Not really a trade deadline question… but with Utah owing OKC that top-10 protected pick this year, does the team want to convey that pick or not? | Lila S. — Salt Lake City, UTChunga: Thinking about this draft, it’s widely criticized as lacking the big 1A stars that other drafts had. Victor Wembanyama ain’t walking through that door. So conveying the pick isn’t the end of the world. And considering how Utah used all three of their picks in the 2023 Draft, you could even roll one over and say one of those counts for this year (a logical leap yes, but not a crazy one). They don’t critically need a #14 overall pick if it comes to that.

Question: How do the other trades that have happened so far — Rozier (Miami), OG (New York), and Siakim (Indiana) — affect the Jazz this year if they end up trading someone? | Madison L. — Richfield, UTKostecka: I think those trades have actually helped the Jazz a lot. Getting one first-rounder for Rozier was the most telling, meaning the market is set for players such as Clarkson and Olynyk as it’ll probably cost at least a first-rounder for either. New York not giving up a first-rounder for (OG) Anunoby was insane, but the player return for Toronto was nice. 

Question: Not Jazz related, but what trade do you think could have the biggest impact on the postseason? | Elsie S. — American Fork, UTChunga: Terry Rozier in Miami looks to be the biggest deal right now. I don’t necessarily believe he fixed their offense, but in the postseason, the Heat always rise to the occasion. It gives them another bucket-getter when the pace slows down in the playoffs. I rate them above Milwaukee but below Boston and Philadelphia. 

Question: With rumors flying faster than any sorority or fraternity house, are there any players who’ve been made “available” that could be good fits for Utah? | Henry M. — Las Vegas, NVKostecka: Honestly, I don’t know if anyone has been made truly available that will have the sort of impact the Jazz are looking for. They’ve got a great core and are clearly building something for this season and the ones that follow. The good news is that the Jazz have more than enough draft picks, players, and expiring contracts to make any move they want. HOWEVER, I saw a report that said the Pelicans were making Herb Jones available — I don’t know how reliable that tidbit is, but that’s the ideal player Hardy and the Jazz should convey.

Utah Jazz Mailbag — As the Trade Deadline Approaches, JP Chunga and Ryan Kostecka Answer Your Questions

From beginning the organization in 1974 to moving to Salt Lake City in 1979, back-to-back NBA Finals appearances in the late 90s, and the ushering in of a new era with Will Hardy just last year, the Utah Jazz are celebrating their 50th anniversary this season.

Following the release of the trailer "Note Worthy — 50 Seasons of Jazz Basketball" on Monday morning, the organization took things further by featuring an alternate broadcast on Jazz+ during the Jazz-Pelicans game Monday night to celebrate the franchises time during the 1970s.

Hosted by Jazz Digital Media Manager JP Chunga and with special guests Truck Robinson, Aaron James, and Gail Goodrich — all key figures during the 1970s — Monday's alternate broadcast featured multiple stories from the 1970s.&nbsp;

Here are five things to know from the broadcast.

1.) Why New Orleans?Before the Jazz came to the Mountain West and settled in Salt Lake City, the organization got tipped off in New Orleans. 

Chunga interviewed Barry Mendelson during the alternate broadcast, asking the former Jazz general manager in New Orleans why then-owner Sam Battistone settled on New Orleans to start the franchise.&nbsp;

"Sam wanted me to come visit with him in Santa Barbara, and I did it," Mendelson said. "He asked me if I'd be interested in starting the organization from scratch in New Orleans. … New Orleans was the only second team in the NBA in the South at that time. The franchise was really awarded to New Orleans because of the Superdome."

2.) Truck vs. Big TBy far, one of the funniest moments of the broadcast was when Thurl' Big T' Bailey said that he could take Truck Robinson in a game of one-on-one in today's world.

For those who don't know, Robinson was the first major free signing in franchise history when he joined the Jazz before the 1977 season. Although he only played for the Jazz for 1.5 seasons, he left his mark as a double-double machine.&nbsp;

Robinson averaged 22.7 points and 15.7 rebounds per game that first season, becoming one of the first non-centers to lead the league in rebounding at that time. Robinson stood at just 6-foot-7 and was listed as a power forward throughout his career. He then averaged a career-high 24.2 points and 13.4 rebounds In 43 games with New Orleans the following seasons — but the Jazz's struggles led them to trade Robinson to the Suns with ideas of a rebuild.&nbsp;

For comparison's sake, Big T is still a legend to Jazz Nation these days while serving as a TV analyst for the team.&nbsp;

He also had a very productive career with the organization, suiting up for the Utah Jazz for 10 seasons. He averaged 14.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, emerging as one of the greatest sixth-man in franchise history.&nbsp;

3.) Jaeson Maravich Makes an AppearanceOne of the more memorable moments of the alternate broadcast was when Jaeson Maravich, Pistol Pete Maravich's eldest son, joined Chunga for a discussion about his dad. 

Although success was tough to find in the early years, it wasn't for lack of trying. The organization immediately made a splash by trading for Pete Maravich in its first season. The homegrown star from LSU, Maravich, was expected to invigorate the new franchise and give them a launching point.

Maravich helped lead the franchise's turnaround, being named back-to-back first-team All-NBA — culminating in a career season in 1976-77 when he led the league in scoring at 31.1 points per game.&nbsp;

Injuries began to take their toll on Maravich, specifically to his knees, which caused him to miss numerous games throughout the rest of his career. Despite losing some of his quickness and athleticism, the sharpshooter made up for it in other ways by becoming more of a facilitator.

"I just marvel at some of the stuff he was doing back then," Jaeson said of his son. "He was so far ahead of his time that it's kind of crazy to think how far advanced he was with his ball handling, passing, and shooting. His skill level was far advanced for the time. … I think his creativity is something that is sorely missing from today's game."

4.) Soul Food RestaurantAs part of the alternate broadcast on Jazz+, fans were invited to ask questions in the group chat. One of the most popular questions asked James, Robinson, and Goodrich were funny stories from their times on the road. 

James had arguably the best one, detailing a midseason trip to Phoenix that started high, had a rough part in the middle, but ended with laughter.&nbsp;

According to James, one of the best parts of playing the Suns was that the team would go to a soul food restaurant called Mrs. White's Golden Rule Cafe. James said it was some of the best soul food he'd ever eaten, and stopping by when in town was always a priority.&nbsp;

As he tells the story with three other teammates in a cab on the way to the cafe, their driver was flying around Phoenix. After telling the guy to slow down, the driver responded, "I drove in New York for 10 years, never had an accident." Sure enough, and with the writing on the wall, the driver ran a red light and got hit by another car.&nbsp;

Although everyone was alright, some players had to miss the game against the Suns, resulting in just seven healthy guys being able to play (and picking up the win). But according to James, the funniest part came when he and his teammates were outside the car following the crash.&nbsp;

"What amazes me about that night is when we laying on the ground, people were passing by asking what was going on," James said. "They were saying, 'Some NBA players were in an accident'. … Attorneys were passing by and giving us their cards. That was amazing."

5.) Studio 54Joining the broadcast during the fourth quarter, the No. 7 overall pick by the Jazz in the 1975 draft, Rich Kelley finally told the tale of one of the most iconic and fun photos during the Jazz's time in New Orleans. 

The photo featured Kelly, James, and Maravich enjoying a night out in New Orleans at Studio 54, a vintage rock club.

"What a night it was," James responded when asked about it.&nbsp;

Kelley had a slightly different take that night, saying, "It was all just whooping and walking, it was just a fun night. … It wasn't anything extraordinary, just good fun."

However, the best part of Kelley's reminiscence came when he told the second half of the story about what happened the following year when he and James tried to go back to Studio 54, but this time without Maravich.

"We go sauntering down to Studio 54, and there's a long line, the same long line that we cut in front of the year before (with Pete)," Kelley said. "This year, we go cutting back up to the bouncer, asking him if he remembers us as the guys who were with Pete Maravich last year. The bouncer said, 'Yeah, you guys were great. You got Pete with you?' We told him nah and that he wasn't going to make it, and the bouncer said, 'Back of the line.'"

The wait is over… it’s officially game week.

With that being said, there are many questions Jazz Nation has before tipoff. Who starts? What's the rotation like? Who's poised for a big season? What sort of seasons should the fans root for?

Question: It’s the only thing I’ve been able to think about watching the Jazz this preseason… who will be starting? | Bert A. — Las Vegas, NVChunga: There’s this understandable obsession with who starts, and I get it. They’re the first ones you see on the floor! The starting group can change matchup to matchup. That being said, the front court seems pretty entrenched — Walker Kessler, John Collins, and Lauri Markkanen. I’d try Talen Horton-Tucker and Jordan Clarkson in the backcourt. They help each other the most with offensive spacing and have a chemistry on the court. But ultimately, it matters who finishes.

Question: It’s been FIFTEEN YEARS since someone on the Jazz had a regular season triple-double. Please tell me that record gets broken this year, and by who? | Jennifer C. — Provo, UTKostecka:&nbsp;Admittedly I’ve never been a pessimistic person, so clearly I think that this year is THE YEAR the curse is broken. I think Utah has multiple players who could be the hero, but for me personally, I’m going with Kris Dunn or Horton-Tucker. They both came close multiple times last year — my only concerns are Dunn may not get enough minutes coming off the bench while Horton-Tucker should play with a frontcourt that is loaded with guys who gobble rebounds. Darkhorse is Kessler… not hard to imagine him doing so with blocks.

Question: Utah has looked up-and-down this preseason, is that what we can expect from the team this year? | Alex J. — Billings, MTChunga: The preseason is a mixed bag and intentionally so. There’s more leash to try different combinations that might or might not work. I’d say this, the Jazz will bring intensity every night — Will Hardy won’t settle for anything less.&nbsp;

Question: I know it’s the preseason so there isn’t much stock to put in what we’ve seen, but which player has most impressed you? | Ali K. — Coalville, UTKostecka: This is tough because multiple guys have impressed, most notably Dunn and Kessler. Dunn has enjoyed a career revitalization in Utah, while Kessler’s experience with Team USA is already paying dividends. But I think Sexton is poised for a breakout year. It’s no surprise his best preseason games were when he played with the second unit — look for him to possibly make a run at the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year award... if he comes off the bench.

Question: Why aren’t the rookies playing more? Are they going to help us at all this season? | Sharrod M. — Carlsbad, CAChunga: Rookies always have a prolonged adjustment to the NBA game. It’s the best league in the world with the best athletes. If I went straight from college to Old Man and the Three, I’d struggle to keep up with JJ (Redick). But they can help when they’re ready. Ochai (Agbaji) took some time to contribute. There aren’t going to be free minutes on this team. If they need to get games with Coach Wojo and the Stars, that’s totally fine. These guys are 19-years-old after all. Keyonte George already has a hype train, hop aboard.

Question: Do you think Hardy has settled on a rotation? Who? It seems like there are 13 guys who could easily play this year… is that too much? | Justine R. — Draper, UTKostecka: Yes, 13 players is too much — so is 12, and 11. Hardy was quoted earlier that the ideal rotation is nine but with Utah’s depth, 10 is most likely. My best guess is that he starts with a rotation of 10 players on opening night: Kessler, Collins, Markkanen, Horton-Tucker and Clarkson as the starters with Sexton, Dunn, Agbaji, George, and Kelly Olynyk making up the second unit.

Question: Last year, Lauri was amazing and Walker was a whole lot better than expected. Who is going to take a step forward this season?&nbsp;| Ashley L. — Lehi, UTChunga: This is a big year for Dunn. I love the way he commands whatever unit he plays with. That guy has taken so many steps forward offensively. You’re done if you give him his floater. I’m sorry. I couldn’t help myself. He should be considered for the Tyus Jones Best Backup PG award.

Question: Longtime fan here… what are we rooting for this season? A playoff berth, the play-in, or wanting a high pick for this draft? | Kevin C. — Meridian, IDKostecka: It’s no secret that Utah started a rebuild last season, but I think last year’s success, combined with the emergence of key players and Hardy, that timeline may be sped up a bit. What I do know is that the Jazz want to win and Hardy will put out a competitive group on the court each night. What sort of success that equates too — that’s why they play the game. I think Jazz Nation should be rooting for the play-in, any postseason-type experience would be beneficial for the team.

Question: The Jazz went 3-2 in the preseason, that would mean they go 49-33 in the regular season. Does that sound about right? | Josh J. — St. George, UTChunga: That’d be a pretty amazing record considering how tough it is in the Western Conference. But don’t go sprinting to the Sportsbook just yet. Records aren’t determined in the preseason. Though it’d be funny if the Wolves (5-0 in preseason) went 82-0. I mean seriously, that’d be crazy. Can you imagine? This Jazz team will have plenty of chances to prove itself. Everybody improved, and that’s the challenge.

Question: We’ve got a lot of good players on expiring contracts or who could help playoff teams — assuming we aren’t one. Is it too early to think about the trade deadline? | Greg B. — Salt Lake City, UTKostecka: While it’s never to early to think about anything in the NBA, trying to predict Utah’s roll in the trade deadline is definitely premature. This is a Jazz team that has the option to be a buyer or seller in February, and I think depending on where they are in the standings, that will determine their future. One thing that should be certain, Utah’s name will pop up multiple times between now and February. They are a team that will probably be involved one way or another.

It was just under a month ago when the Utah Jazz released their upcoming schedule for the 2023-24 season — how we feeling about it, Jazz Nation?

Is this season easier or tougher than last year? Do the Jazz have a chance to make the play-in? What's with playing on Sundays? And lastly, how do we feel about the inaugural In-Season Tournament?

In what should be an exciting and thrilling season, JP Chunga (Jazz Podcast Host) and myself (Jazz Digital Content Writer) are here to answer your Jazz questions — and much more.

Question: What are your first thoughts upon seeing Utah’s schedule this season? | Christa A. — Salt Lake City, UTKostecka: Why can’t it be October 25th yet?!? The schedule release is always one of the best days of the year – but nothing tops free agency – because it’s all about hope. Hope for what can be. But my instant takeaway from this season’s schedule is the amount of double-headers – or lack thereof. Playing on Sundays for the first time in forever helps negate the amount of double-headers for the Jazz, which should pay dividends. 

Question: I know last year, the beginning and ending stretches were brutal. … Do you see any difficult periods this season? | Mike Y. — Ogden, UTChunga: Looks like the middle! The holiday season road trip that sees a Cleveland-Detroit back-to-back finishes in New Orleans. It’s five games in eight days. Then there’s a January stretch where the team plays six games in 10 days. Long road trips where you don’t know what city you’re in are always tough.

Question: People may forget but we started off really hot last year (10-3 I think). Is something like that possible again this year? | Chad C. — Las Vegas, NVKostecka: Last year's start was sensational, mainly because the Jazz were winning by simply playing harder. They came together as&nbsp;a unit a lot quicker than expected, which helps when everybody already counts you out. But this isn’t last year, and the Jazz won’t be catching anyone off guard. The first 14 games are brutal – 10 against playoff teams, and two more against upstart squads in Orlando and Indiana. If Utah is .500 or better at that point, that’s a win.

Question: What do you see as being our easiest stretch of games… like where do we have a chance to climb up the standings? | Dan P. — Layton, UTChunga: NINE home games in March! Plenty of opportunities to win in the friendly confines. It’s after the trade deadline so other teams will be reshaped, but ultimately, having two Dallas and Houston matchups brings familiarity and intrigue.

Question: Should Jazz fans be offended that we only have one nationally televised game this year? What do we need to do to get more? | Mandi D. — Bozeman, MTKostecka: Short answer, no. It happens, and it will continue to happen until Utah can get back to making a mark in the postseason. For what it’s worth, the Jazz will be playing seven games on NBATV. But until this team can get back to the postseason, nationally televised games will have to wait.

Question: Is the new In-Season Tournament something we should care about or is it just a whatever sort of thing? | Ryan M. — Farmington, UTChunga: It’s the first year of the Tournament, and I understand the apprehension, but as it grows in stature there’s going to be a level of importance. It’s an opportunity for hardware. Like the Elam ending (target score) in the NBA All-Star Game, players care when there’s something on the line. Kyle Lowry took a charge! This will definitely add juice to the regular season. Once the knockout rounds tip off in Vegas, it’ll be intense.

Question: Now that the schedule has been released, am I delusional for thinking the Jazz could make the play-in tournament (at worst)? | Phoebe M. — Pocatello, IDKostecka: This is a question I have asked myself over and over again, making sure I’m not a homer for trusting in the team I work for/cover. But the more I think about it, I think Utah can for sure make the play-in tournament. A trio of Kessler, Markkanen, and Collins will be among the biggest, longest and most athletic frontcourts in the league, and this team will play hard and be prepared every night under Hardy. If Utah is healthy starting February, they have a stretch where 13 of their 18 games are home, with no back-to-backs.

Question: For the first time in forever, I think, the Jazz are playing home games on Sunday. Why are they doing that and how does it affect the schedule compared to the past? | James C. — Cedar City, UTChunga: The schedule gets compressed when playing an 82-game season, so naturally dates will need to be open. The league needed available Sundays because of the new In-Season Tournament and week-delayed start. I think of the Sunday ABC primetime – it’s a big deal to play in those. While it’s not on national TV, I’ll hear Mike Breen’s baritone screaming BANG on big shots. KD (11/19), Giannis (2/4), and Victor (2/25). Sundays are for the hoops. 

Question: As someone who knows the NBA really well, what stretch of games do you think would be the most entertaining to go to for a diehard Jazz and NBA fan? | Stacy D. — Park City, UTKostecka: As mentioned earlier, From Feb. 1 - Mar. 18, Utah will play 13 of its 18 games at home, which should allow the team to find a nice rhythm and make a climb up the standings. Those games include showdowns at home against Philly (Embiid), Milwaukee (Giannis), OKC (Shai), Golden State (Curry), Los Angeles Lakers (James), San Antonio (Wemby), and Boston (Tatum).

Question: Quin Snyder makes his return on Mar. 15 — also John Collins facing his former team. What sort of reception should Snyder receive? | Hollie F. — Moab, UTChunga: A raucous ovation. Doris Burke (name drop) told me this great story about Quin Snyder and Donovan Mitchell’s relationship. It took courage to hand the keys of the offense to a rookie. He probably did it before Donovan was ready. Donovan relayed to Doris they were speaking different languages of NBA basketball. Later on in his tenure, Donovan boasted to Doris that he could speak the same language. The growth and development of the franchise and Quin as a coach are unforgettable. He’s a tremendous basketball mind.

Alright Jazz Nation, now that two weeks have passed since arguably one of the most important draft lottery’s in Utah history, how are y’all feeling?

Do you feel good about getting the No. 9 pick? Wish Utah would’ve lost more games for a better pick? Who should the Jazz draft? How does management feel heading into the offseason?&nbsp;

In what’s expected to be a massive offseason for Utah’s future, JP Chunga (Jazz Digital Content Producer) and myself (Digital Content Writer) are here to answer your questions — and much more.

Question: How should us Jazz fans feel about getting the No. 9 pick in the draft? | Molly R. — Salt Lake City, UTChunga: Draft picks are the currency of hope, and with the Jazz slotted at 9, there are plenty of players who can make an impact in that range. Gordon Hayward was a No. 9 pick, so was Andre Igoudala, Amare Stoudamire, and Tracy McGrady. It’s understandable to be disappointed not to move up, but with the Draft, luck can find you anywhere. 

Question: What are Utah’s biggest draft needs? | Christian V. — St. George, UTKostecka: I don’t believe the Jazz are searching out any certain position or player, but looking for versatility, length, and defense. The beauty of the roster already is that Markkanen is so versatile, able to play the 3 or 4, which means the Jazz can go after a similar position and not have to worry. I think defensive length and tenacity at point guard is also a spot Utah will be looking for. 

Question: Do you think it would’ve been worth it to lose a few more games and get better odds… or should we be happy with the No. 9 pick? | Keem J. — Park City, UTChunga: Personally, I value playing competitive basketball for as long as possible. You learn more. There’s a greater number of data points for otherwise unproven players to show something. Kris Dunn went for 19 points and 14 assists in a win against the Nuggets (!!!) when Jokic played nearly 30 minutes. Ochai dropped 28 and was asked to do even more. Plenty of players will be available at No. 9 that can grow into rotation players. 

Question: Obviously we are probably out on Victor, Scoot and Brandon (Miller), so which players should we be expecting in our range? | Jessica Q. — South Jordan, UTKostecka: The answer to this question is that nobody really knows. It appears the top 3-4 players are already spoken for (just not sure of which order), and it can go anywhere from that point. The names most commonly associated with the Jazz according to mock drafts are Taylor Hendricks, Anthony Black, Cam Whitmore, Gradey Dick, and Ausar Thompson. 

Question: Should the Jazz prioritize positional size/length, positional player, or best available? | April F. — Bozeman, MTChunga: Best available. What if the Men In Black Neuralyzer wipes out the first eight teams’ front offices and Victor Wembanyama is available at 9? I think you take Victor! Take whoever is top of the board. Talent finds a way to fit in. 

Question: What are Utah’s priorities with picks No. 16 and 28, and how do they change from the No. 9 pick? | Luke D. — Las Vegas, NVKostecka: I don’t think it changes at all!!! Much like JP said above, it’s about getting the best possible player they think will fit with the team. Also, don’t be shocked if Utah trades one or both of the picks to either move up in the draft or stockpile more picks in the future. While I believe they’ll use at least the 9/16 picks, nothing can be certain  on draft night— and that’s what makes it so fun.

Question: What would be a perfect draft for the Jazz? | Victoria C. — Nampa, IDChunga: Nobody will know if it’s a perfect draft until years down the road. Still, selecting talented players who can grow into starters is always the goal. The Jazz didn’t have a draft pick heading into the 2022 offseason, but ended up with 2 (Ochai Agbaji and Walker Kessler). Both of those guys proved they can contribute to winning.

Question: I read the Blazers are shopping the No. 3 pick… what would it take for us to move up to that spot? Is it even worth it? | Josh C. — Tooele, UTKostecka: My best guess is that any sort of conversation will have to begin with the Blazers wanting Lauri Markkanen, and the Jazz will respond by politely hanging up the phone. I believe the Jazz are very happy to be in the spot they’re in, and I don’t foresee them moving up in the draft unless they fall in love with a prospect. 

Question: Can we expect Utah to use all three picks or do you think they might use some of their picks to make other moves? | Jai X. — Laramie, WYChunga: The fact that they have so many gives them flexibility. ‘Optionality’ has become the en vogue word. According to Bobby Marks, keep an eye on No. 28. The Jazz’s coffers in the second round aren’t as flush as the first. And looking at how second round picks went at the trade deadline, I think I’m worth a couple second rounders (probably not).

Question: How much optimism should Jazz Nation have heading into the draft and what the offseason could look like? | Clement L. — Bountiful, UTKostecka: As witnessed with Miami’s run to the NBA Finals, culture is much more important than many believe — and in that scenario, the Jazz are building a phenomenal one. The optimism should be through the roof for Utah. While the Jazz may take a step back next season (depending on what happens in the offseason), the writing is on the wall that this team — with head coach Will Hardy leading the way — should be contending sooner than later.

For a team that many analysts predicted to be challenging for the No. 1 overall pick, it's safe to say that the Utah Jazz have already succeeded expectations.

Currently sitting at 21-23 on the year and in ninth place in the Western Conference, many of those same analysts didn't think the Jazz would reach 21 wins for the entire season.

Utah hasn't just surpassed those expectations, they've set themselves up for a big second half of the season — but if that were to happen, how?

To answer those questions — and much more — Jazz Digital Content Producer, JP Chunga, and myself, Digital Content Writer, Ryan Kostecka, are here to give our thoughts and opinions.&nbsp;

Question: Are the Jazz where you thought they'd be at the halfway point of the season? Better? Worse? | Jason Chan / Ogden, UTChunga: Better! Did anyone expect the start? This team has a top 5 offensive rating after trading away their top two scorers. And it's coming from everyone. 70% of the scoring is from newcomers (most in the league). New year? New me.

Question: How good are the odds of Lauri Markkanen making the All-Star game? And do you think anyone else will be participating in All-Star weekend? | Logan Brod / Salt Lake City, UTKostecka: At this point, the correct question is whether Markkanen will start in the All-Star game? It sounds absurd, but with (Nikola) Jokic and LeBron (James) locked into starting frontcourt spots, there's one more opening. AD (Anthony Davis) and Zion (Williamson) are both recovering from injury and may not be available, which would make it a battle between Markkanen and (Domantas) Sabonis. I think Walker Kessler makes the Rising Stars game, and I wouldn't be shocked if there's some other Jazz flavor in the other competitions.

Question: Thoughts on Hardy as a head coach… is he as good as he seems, or is it a little bit of beginner's luck? | Toby Hyun / Carlsbad, CAChunga: He's tremendous for a first-year head coach. Jordan Clarkson is unleashed, and Lauri Markkanen is bringing Finlandia to Jazzlandia. He'll ride the wave if someone is cooking in the second half. He's not dogmatic in his rotations. I'm still waiting for Will to go full Jerry Sloan and get thrown out of a game, but he's giving tremendous reactions on the sidelines. A fierce pursed lip.

Question: Who has been the biggest surprise on this Jazz team so far? | Naiel Chaudry / Las Vegas, NVKostecka: There are so many options; Markkanen's rise as an All-Star, Jordan Clarkson's game evolving, Hardy's coaching acumen in his rookie season. Honestly though, Kessler as a rookie has been the most impressive. He's one of the best rookie defenders in the game and a top-5 rim protector. As his game continues to evolve over the years, he looks like a surefire All-Defense candidate — and a potential All-Star if his offensive game can come around.

Question: Do you think Utah will be active at the trade deadline? Buyers or sellers? | Foster Smith / Heber City, UTChunga: Talking to insiders around the league, there aren't many sellers. The parity of #THISLEAGUE has kept dreams alive thanks to the play-in tournament. I expect deals to be done the week of the trade deadline.

Question: After beating Cleveland on Tuesday — best game of the year — who do you think won the trade between the two teams? | Genevieve Kashat / Boise, IDKostecka: As of right now, it's one of those win-win trades where both teams appear to have massively benefitted — but it's still too early to decide. Let's say Cleveland wins a title with Don (Mitchell) leading the way; nothing can beat that. But if the Cavs don't and Utah controls their draft for five years, that gives the Jazz many options. Right now, it's 50-50, but time will tell how it all shakes out.

Question: What's a bold prediction you have for the second half of the season? | Peyton Waldrep / Bountiful, UTChunga: Walker Kessler starts. They've been bringing him along slowly, but he's going to force his way into the first five. The double block against Bam? He's already in the rotation, but the more comfortable he gets with Mike Conley and Jordan Clarkson, the more playing time he'll get. In the offseason, he should go to the "KG School of Setting Sorta Legal Screens."

Question: How important is this next stretch, where 10 of the 12 games are at home, especially leading up to the trade deadline? | Nash Roe / Billings, MTKostecka: This is arguably the most crucial stretch of the year for Utah, as they're 21-23. These 12 games go right up to the trade deadline, which is what will ultimately decide the season. If the Jazz go 8-4, they could see themselves inside the top six in the West, and the roster could stay intact. If they go 4-8 and drop out of the play-in tournament, I would not be surprised if they become sellers at the deadline. Either way, these next 12 games will decide where Utah goes for the rest of the season.

Question: Looking ahead, what's the most important stretch of games coming up for the rest of the season? | Ozan Kopelman / Scottsdale, AZChunga: Start of March. 6 road games in 11 days post All-Star Break. Looks daunting!

Question: The Jazz are three games out of the No. 4 seed in the playoffs… is it too crazy to think they might be able to make a run over the second half of the schedule? | Alissa Telusca / St. George, UTKostecka: Well if you read my story about second-half predictions, I actually picked Utah to make a run over the final 35 games. I think they're coming together as a team, have a very good stretch of home games to kickstart the run, and are getting healthy again. I don't know if Utah gets all the way to the four seed, but I would not be shocked if this team misses the play-in and ends up in that 5-6 range.

Through the first two weeks of the season, the Jazz are playing like one of the top teams in the NBA.

From Lauri Markkanen’s early All-Star potential, to Jordan Clarkson’s playmaking abilities, and head coach Will Hardy’s ability to get his players to buy in, Utah is making noise as one of the biggest surprises in the league.

The Jazz currently sit at 6-2 on the year, with victories over playoff contenders Denver, Minnesota, New Orleans and Memphis (2x). They lead the league in points off turnovers and rank in the top five in made three-pointers, assists, and offensive rebounds.&nbsp;

But with such a surprising start, there are still some detractors who question whether or not Utah’s success is sustainable.&nbsp;

Question: After a 6-2 start, is this Jazz team for real or just riding a hot streak? | Geoffrey B. / Provo, UTChunga: Who knows? But does anyone have better wins? Memphis (twice), Minnesota (away), New Orleans (away), and Denver. Playing close games will always be a toss-up, but the fact that they are doing this against projected playoff teams is impressive.

Question: What has been the most surprising thing about Utah’s start? | Kobe D / Logan, UTKostecka: It’s almost shocking how Hardy has gotten this team to buy into his philosophies on both ends of the court. With a mixture of rookies, veterans, and mid-career guys who all came together just over a month ago, the cohesiveness they show on the court and the effort is beyond impressive.

Question: Who has the best chance of being Utah’s representative at the All-Star game? | Sarah W. / Missoula, MTChunga: I hope Mike Conley tries to win the three-point contest this year. He got Steph-ed in 2021. A third-straight year of 40%+ from deep should put him in the running. But as far as the All-Star Game, it’ll be tough to fit in the West. The depth of talent is unreal. You’ll need to outplay some really good players.

Question: How come we never saw this version of Jordan Clarkson the last few seasons? | Devon M / Lehi, UTKostecka: Simply put, Clarkson was doing what was needed of him — being a flamethrower off the bench to play alongside Joe Ingles. There was always untapped potential with Clarkson’s game and we are seeing it now. He looks great as a playmaker and is a major focal point of this offense.

Question: What has been Utah’s most impressive victory this season? | Jennifer C. / Pocatello, IDChunga: Memphis last Saturday. I was impressed because 21 of the final 23 points were assisted — WITHOUT MIKE CONLEY. Drive, kick, swing. It’s been a staple of the Bucks under Bud (head coach Mike Budenholzer), and you saw it in that final quarter. Kelly Olynyk spotted Lauri Markkanen. Collin Sexton found Olynyk. And Jordan Clarkson collapsed the Grizzlies and dished to Malik Beasley. Plus, Beasley got to dance… Can’t beat that.

Question: How difficult is the upcoming schedule — there are a lot of road games. | Dwight P / Hurricane, UTKostecka: From the start of the season through the end of Thanksgiving weekend, the Jazz have arguably the toughest schedule in the league. They play 22 games (14 on the road) with six sets of back-to-backs — 12 games against 2022 playoffs teams, and that doesn’t include the Clippers, Lakers, and Blazers. The schedule is beyond brutal — and everyone will know by then what to make of this team.

Question: What are your thoughts on Will Hardy through 8 games? | Cedrick S. / Wendover, NVChunga: This team plays hard. That’s a credit to him. It doesn’t matter if it’s Simone Fontecchio against Houston or Nickeil Alexander-Walker with winning plays against Memphis. Every player feels empowered to compete — even if they make mistakes. Hardy’s crew neck sweater look is a win for the business casual crowd.

Question: Where do the Jazz still need to improve? | Melissa Y. / Salt Lake City, UTKostecka: It’s still early so this team will improve in many areas — but I’m going to go with what Hardy talks about; fouls. The Jazz lead the league with 24.3 fouls per game. Obviously Hardy wants that number to go down, but at the same time keep up the physicality and hustle this team plays with. Finding that blend will only make this team that much better.
