Head Coach, Sioux Falls Skyforce

Kasib Powell begins his third year as head coach of the HEAT’s G League affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce. Powell was originally hired in 2016 as an assistant coach for the Skyforce, a role he held for four seasons before being promoted to his current position on Sept. 16, 2021. He is the 21st head coach in Sioux Falls’ history and in addition to leading the Skyforce he assists the HEAT coaching staff during both summer league and training camp. Since he took over the head coaching reins of the Skyforce they have had a league-high 15 call-ups and last season advanced to the NBA G League Western Conference Finals.

Powell, who was inducted into the Skyforce Hall of Fame in April 2016, previously spent two seasons (2007-09) with the Skyforce as a player where he earned the 2007-08 NBA G League MVP award after averaging 22.2 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists. As a result of his playing stint in Sioux Falls, Powell was signed by the HEAT on March 22, 2008 to a 10-day contract and later was re-signed for the remainder of the season on April 8. He appeared in 11 games (four starts) with Miami and averaged 7.6 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 27.6 minutes. His professional playing career spanned over nine seasons which included stops in the NBA, the NBA G League, CBA, USBL and overseas.

Upon his retirement in 2013, Powell served as the owner of the South Dakota Basketball Network, which focuses on the development of AAU players, and as head coach of the Dakota Magic of the National Basketball League of America. Powell resides in South Dakota with his girlfriend Katherine Fideler and their three children, Kaevon, Janiyah and Jamre.
