Mindfulness Champions Initiative

The Miami HEAT teamed up with Florida Blue, Mindful Kids Miami, and Miami-Dade County Public Schools to create a Mindfulness Champions Initiative to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health and address the needs of students and teachers returning to school after an extended period of isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of the Mindfulness Champions Initiative, Mindful Kids Miami trained a Mindfulness Champion at each of the 354 K-12 public schools in Miami-Dade County—on mindfulness and mental health education.

HEAT Loud & Proud 2021

The Miami HEAT alongside Ultimate Kronos Group once again hosted a HEAT Loud & Proud Dance Party in collaboration with Door Dash and Night Owl Cookies on the eve of the 5-year Anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub shooting. Keeping with the theme of the Dance Party, which is to celebrate life and diversity, Night Owl Cookies debuted their new limited edition Pride cookie as part of the launch event. Additionally, the Miami HEAT and UKG made a $5,000 donation to benefit Equality Florida, the largest civil rights organization dedicated to securing full equality for Florida's lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community, as we take a stand to help defend the rights of LGBTQ citizens in the State of Florida and throughout our country.

Random Acts of HEAT: CrossFit Immersion

Random Acts of HEAT

As part of the Random Acts of HEAT initiative, presented by Ultimate Kronos Group, we surprised guests at CrossFit Immersion with HEAT Dancers and mascot, Burnie. We also gifted them merchandise from both the HEAT’s Black Lives Matter Court Culture line as well as Pride apparel and Gatorade product. We showed our support for an establishment that planted their feet firmly on behalf of inclusion, equality and social justice. Random Acts of HEAT is a series of good deeds in the South Florida community meant to inspire individuals, families, organizations and communities to reciprocate kindness through random acts of their own.

Random Acts of HEAT: National Nurses Week

Random Acts of HEAT

As part of the Random Acts of HEAT initiative, presented by Ultimate Kronos Group, the Miami HEAT celebrated National Nurses Week and National Hospital Week alongside World Central Kitchen, Pollo Tropical, Papa John’s Pizza, and Café Bustelo, by hosting a food distribution event at Baptist Health Doctor’s Hospital. Up to 750 nurses, healthcare workers, and hospital staff received a meal, a Papa John’s Hometown Heroes card which grants access to a free large pizza and an additional discount code, and cafecito from Café Bustelo as a thank you for their dedication to serve our community throughout the pandemic.

Health in the Hood Volunteer Event

HEAT Partners with Health in the Hood

The Miami HEAT and Health in the Hood teamed up to address the ongoing food insecurity due to COVID-19 and brought awareness to the food deserts across Miami-Dade County. Volunteers from the Miami HEAT planted and harvested produce at the Health in the Hood Liberty City Garden as part of the inaugural Florida Food Waste Prevention Week. The fresh food harvested at the event was given to the Health in the Hood Opa-Locka pantry for their meal distribution process.

HEAT Serves Breakfast At Vaccination Site

HEAT Serves Breakfast

The Miami HEAT teamed up with Florida Blue, Feeding South Florida and Café Bustelo to serve free breakfast to residents getting a COVID-19 vaccination at the Miami-Dade College North Campus. The HEAT also provided breakfast to the 250 United States Army personnel, federal, state and county staff and healthcare heroes working at the vaccination site. HEAT Dancers and HEAT Mascot, Burnie, were also present to interact with those in attendance who had just received their COVID-19 vaccine.

Random Acts of HEAT

HEAT Donates

As part of the Random Acts of HEAT initiative, presented by Ultimate Kronos Group, HEAT Legend Glen Rice was joined by HEAT staffers and representatives from Feeding South Florida and Pollo Tropical to surprise seniors at two low-income housing apartment complexes, each with approximately 200 residents, with a food stable box (30 lbs.) providing one week’s worth of meals.

Your Miami HEAT has partnered with Direct Relief, a humanitarian aid organization with a mission to improve the health and lives of people affected by poverty or emergencies—without regard to politics, religion, or ability to pay. Together with the Micky & Madeleine Arison Family Foundation we have made a $1,000,000 donation to Direct Relief’s Health Equity Fund, which will expand the organization’s work towards health equity by ensuring health centers and free and charitable clinics have access to the medicines and funding they need to serve their communities.

Drive-Thru Holiday Event

The Miami HEAT, alongside PepsiCo, TD Bank, FedEx Express, and Comcast, hosted a contactless drive-through food and gift distribution to make the holidays brighter for local students and families from Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS). Twelve students, identified from underprivileged areas, received a holiday gift bag from FedEx, a subscription for eight months of internet service, and a Chromebook laptop from Comcast, JBL headphones, toys, and other items from HEAT partners.

The Miami HEAT hosted the 29th Annual HEAT Thanksgiving Celebration on Thursday, November 19th at the Mana Convention Center in Miami. The HEAT, alongside Feeding South Florida, hosted a contactless drive-through food distribution to continue to bring assistance to those adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. HEAT Legends, Alonzo Mourning, Shane Battier and Glen Rice, along with HEAT front office employees, joined presenting sponsor Florida Blue, as well as supporting sponsors Vico Painting, Goya Foods, FOX Sports Sun, Hairclub, ONE Sotheby’s International Realty and Papa John’s Pizza to usher in the Thanksgiving holiday with the residents of the Greater Miami area.

Veterans Day 2020

HEAT Veterans Day

Due to the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic and with the support from presenting sponsor Ultimate Kronos Group, a caravan including HEAT Legends, Alonzo Mourning, Shane Battier and Glen Rice, along with representatives from Rebuilding Together Miami-Dade, Inc., and a military-branded vehicle conducted surprise visits to the homes of three retired veterans on Veterans Day. Each veteran received a Rebuilding Together Miami-Dade, Inc. Healthy Home Kit funded by Ultimate Kronos Group, a HEAT care package comprised of a customized jersey, giveaways from Florida Blue, as well as a personal monetary donation from Ultimate Kronos Group.

15th Annual Hispanic Heritage Celebration

HEAT Hispanic Heritage Celebration

The Miami HEAT hosted its 15th Annual HEAT Hispanic Heritage Celebration on Saturday, October 10th. Presented by Pollo Tropical and supported by Florida Blue and Fox Sports Sun, the celebration commenced by bringing a community caravan of food, music and celebration to three locations in Miami-Dade County. The route began at Villa Aurora and then traveled to Amistad Apartments, both in Little Havana, ending at Dr. Barbara Carey Shuler Manor Apartments in Model City. Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent, Alberto Carvalho, along with HEAT Dancers, Burnie and Uptown Dale helped distribute 600 Original Cuban Sandwiches from Pollo Tropical, giveaways from Florida Blue, toys and masks from MDCPS and Aquafina water.

HEAT Finals Food Distribution Event

To celebrate their journey to the NBA Finals, the Miami HEAT, the NBA and State Farm, alongside Feeding South Florida and the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition (FRRC), hosted a food distribution to continue bringing assistance to those adversely affected by the COVID pandemic. Up to 600 families received a 35 lb. box, which included milk, protein, produce and an assortment of non-perishable goods.

The Miami HEAT and the Office of Community Engagement for Miami-Dade County Public Schools worked together to identify (25) students at varying ages/grade levels in low-income areas to distribute Microsoft laptop devices and other resources to aide their distance-learning needs for the 2020-21 school year. These students were chosen from a pool of current and former students of the HEAT Academy program.

2020 HEAT Scholarship Winners

BankUnited and The Miami HEAT Charitable Fund offer $25,000 annually in scholarship funds to high school seniors attending Miami-Dade, Broward, Monroe or Palm Beach schools. This is the 24th year that the Miami HEAT has offered scholarships. HEAT Champion Shane Battier surprised the recipients with a video call awarding them with their scholarships. Scholarships are awarded based on academic performance and outstanding community service.

Family Meals on the Go

HEAT Family Meals on the Go

The Miami HEAT along with World Central Kitchen and Uber have teamed up to address food insecurity and provide assistance to underserved children and families throughout Miami-Dade through the Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ Family Meals on the Go initiative, created by Superintendent Carvalho in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Family Meals on the Go purchases an average of 500-700 meals from local restaurants daily along with 200 bags of fresh produce, four days per week provided by Farm Share. M-DCPS staff, administrators, school police and Superintendent Alberto Carvalho deliver those meals personally, seven days per week, to impoverished communities throughout the county.

The Miami HEAT celebrated the opening of its 20th Learn & Play Center and first in Broward County at HANDY, Inc. in Fort Lauderdale on March 10th. The new HEAT Learn & Play Center, refurbished in partnership with presenting sponsor and longtime HEAT community partner Florida Blue, will provide youth with a safe place to play and resources to help them explore their academic interests.
