Kareem Abdul-Jabbar accepts the Presidential Medal of Freedom

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who spent six seasons in Milwaukee and was a keystone of the Bucks 1971 NBA Championship team, was one of 21 recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom Wednesday afternoon at the White House.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is given to individuals “who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.”

In a statement from the White House, President Obama said:

"The Presidential Medal of Freedom is not just our nation's highest civilian honor - it's a tribute to the idea that all of us, no matter where we come from, have the opportunity to change this country for the better. From scientists, philanthropists, and public servants to activists, athletes, and artists, these 21 individuals have helped push America forward, inspiring millions of people around the world along the way."

Abdul-Jabbar received his award with Michael Jordan, Ellen DeGeneres, Robert De Niro, Tom Hanks, Vin Scully and Bruce Springsteen among others.

In six seasons with the Bucks, Abdul-Jabbar averaged 30.4 points, 15.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game. The NBA Hall of Famer eventually won six NBA Championships over his 20-year NBA career and was the league MVP six times. His number 33 jersey is one of eight retired by the Bucks.
