ORLANDO - FOX Sports Florida, the television home of the Orlando Magic, announced plans to feature NBA Hall of Famer Tracy McGrady this week with a trio of classic replays celebrating some of his best games as a member of the Magic. Starting Thursday, June 4 at 7 p.m. with a replay of McGrady leading Orlando to victory over Allen Iverson and the Philadelphia 76ers, Magic fans can watch three vintage games over three consecutive nights on the network. Additional Magic replays will be announced at a later date.

ORLANDO - While many basketball fans might unfortunately be able to relate to Mo Bamba putting on 28 pounds while quarantined at home the past 2 ½ months, the Orlando Magic center actually stayed motivated and on track as it related to fitness and he added mostly muscle to his gangly 7-foot frame.

While the NBA’s stoppage in play couldn’t have come at a worse time than it did for the streaking Magic, Bamba used his time off from basketball to intensely go to work on his formerly rail-thin body. The No. 6 pick from the 2018 NBA Draft says he spent most of the past 10 weeks lifting weights in his makeshift living room gym and also mixing in 3-point shooting sessions in a private gym that he had access to during the quarantine because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking to a group of Magic season-ticketholders in an exclusive question-and-answer session online, Bamba – who recently turned 22 years old – detailed the daily routine that finally allowed him to add some much-needed bulk to his towering frame.

``I’ve worked my tail off during this quarantine,’’ Bamba told Magic season-ticketholders. ``I’ve taken this as an opportunity to really put on weight, really recover as far as getting rest and changing up my diet. I’ve been able to get a chef in and he drops off food occasionally. That’s probably the biggest thing that helped me put on a lot of weight.

``This is going to sound weird, but I put on probably about 28 pounds since quarantine (started),’’ Bamba said with a sheepish laugh. ``We did the whole body (composition) testing when we got back in (the Magic practice facility) and I’ve only added about 2.5 percent body fat. So, a lot of it is muscle and I can’t wait to get back out there and work.’’

In recent weeks, Magic season-ticketholders have been treated to exclusive question-and-answer sessions with head coach Steve Clifford, forward Jonathan Isaac and Bamba. Magic point guard D.J. Augustin recently took questions from Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards members, while former Magic forward Rashard Lewis spent an hour online with fans last week as part of Budweiser’s ``Legendary Moments’’ promotion.

Bamba and his Magic teammates have been back inside the Amway Center for voluntary weight-lifting sessions, conditioning drills and light basketball skill work the past two weeks. The Magic have taken extreme precautions to make sure that players are safe before entering the Amway Center, and there are restrictions as to how many players and coaches can be in areas of the gym and weight room at the same time.

``I’ve been to the facility since the first time that it was opened back up and the procedure to get into the facility is very grueling,’’ Bamba said. ``The first thing they do is take your temperature, then you go through a bunch of questions, de-sanitize and wash your hands and you have to wear a mask at all times. But the work that we’ve been able to put in at the arena has been good.’’

After seeing his rookie season cut short by a stress reaction in his left foot, Bamba made strides this season in terms of playing with more aggression offensively and battling better on the defensive end in the post. Bamba averaged 5.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.4 blocked shots in 14.5 minutes per night over 60 games. He scored a career high 15 points twice this season – Nov. 25 at Cleveland and Feb. 26 at Atlanta – making five of five 3-point shots against the Cavs and three of four 3-pointers versus the Hawks. For the season, Bamba has shot 46.8 percent from the floor and 35.7 percent from 3-point range.

Not satisfied with those numbers, Bamba looked to make some major personal improvements during his time away from basketball. Establishing a routine, Bamba said, was one of his biggest keys to making progress in terms of building strength and adding bulk.

``I’ve had my home gym set up in my living-room area, but I don’t have that anymore because we’re back in the arena (for workouts), but my weekdays and weekends were all pretty productive,’’ Bamba said. ``On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, I do some kind of lift, whether it’s full body, lower body or upper body.

``Then, I take time to eat lunch and then I’ll go and shoot,’’ Bamba added. ``Sometimes, at night I’ll go again (to the gym) and work on different kinds of finishes or work on post-ups around the rim just so that I can stay in shape and stay active.’’

When he wasn’t working on his body, Bamba said he tried to pass the time while quarantined learning to cook, ``playing every board game imaginable,’’ dabbling in audio/video equipment repair and gaming online. He said he’s missed the joking, hanging out and trash talking with his teammates most during the quarantine, but the group picked up right where it left off during a recent team-wide Zoom call.

``I just miss how much of a family it is with us,’’ Bamba said of the dynamic between Magic front office staff, coaches and players. ``Orlando is known for being a family town, especially with our Disney connections, but you can really feel that (family connection) within the team. I see three or four of the guys (at the Amway Center during workouts) a day, but we’re still all texting one another and Face-Timing all the time.

``We’re all really looking forward to getting back together,’’ Bamba said. ``Aside from the basketball stuff, we’re all really good friends off the court. We did a Zoom call not too long ago and everyone was just cracking jokes. You could just tell that everyone is just eager to be back around one another again.’’

One reason the Magic can’t wait to get back together, Bamba stressed, is because of the chemistry the group started to develop just before the stoppage in play. In the days and weeks leading up to the NBA season being suspended on March 11, the Magic won three games in a row, six of nine and eight of 11 after the break for the NBA All-Star Game. At 30-35, Orlando currently sits just a half-game back of the Brooklyn Nets for the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference standings, putting it on track for another playoff berth.

Bamba feels if the Magic can recapture the positive vibes that they started to play with in late February and early March, they could potentially make some major noise in the playoffs – if and when they begin again under a potentially new format devised by the NBA.

``We were hot. We had the number one offense and our defense was getting back close to where we were last year,’’ Bamba said of a Magic squad that ranked first in the NBA in scoring (120.8), first in assists per game (32.1), first in field goal makes per game (45.1), second in field goal percentage (48.6 percent) and 13thin 3-point percentage (37 percent) in the 12 games after the NBA All-Star break. ``We’re all looking forward to getting back and we know what we’re capable of. We know what we have to do to get back to that. We’re not sure how they’re going to do the format, but we’re eager to play. We want to get out there, be for each other and be about what it says (on the front) of our jerseys.’’

ORLANDO - While acknowledging that the stoppage in the NBA season couldn’t have come at a worse time for an Orlando Magic team that had hit its stride by early March, head coach Steve Clifford confidently told a group of season-ticketholders on Thursday that he feels the future is still bright for the team when play ultimately resumes.

``I believe that in this last year-plus, we’ve taken a step where in this (NBA) we’re more relevant again and I think we’re becoming respected as a team that’s difficult to play against,’’ Clifford said via an exclusive Zoom call with Magic season-ticketholders on Thursday afternoon. ``And this is just the beginning.

``NBA basketball is all about having playoff success – I understand that, and the players understand that,’’ Clifford continued. ``We were playing much better at the end and we had like the second or third-easiest schedule left, so this pandemic – which is much more important than basketball – came at a bad time for so many reasons. But we have good young pieces, I like the guys we have, they’re good representatives of our organization and I think the future of our team is bright.’’

Like many sports’ fans and avid Magic supporters, Clifford was stunned when the NBA decided to suspend its season on March 11 in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic sweeping the globe. At the time of the league suspension, Clifford’s Magic had won three games in a row, six of nine and eight of 12 to move comfortably into the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. At 30-35, the Magic sit just a half-game back of the Brooklyn Nets for the seventh seed – a spot Orlando feels confident that it can nab as long as there are regular-season games played prior to the start of the NBA playoffs.

The NBA is allowing teams in states that are starting to ease off their stay-at-home orders to begin holding light, individual workouts for players on Friday. The Magic, meanwhile, aren’t expected to reopen their practice facility at the Amway Center to players until next week – something that has Clifford excited even though rules will prohibit him from working with players for a period of time as the league slowly works its way back while continuing to practice various safety measures. Initially, NBA teams will be allowed to have no more than four players in the gymnasium at a time and they will be spaced out at different baskets during workouts. Also, facilities will undergo major cleaning details on a nightly basis in an effort to curb any potential spreads of the coronavirus.

Clifford said he is already starting for formulate plans in his head for when the Magic are allowed to practice in full. Because players usually get in a host of work outs prior to training camps starting in late September, this restart will be completely different because many players haven’t touched a basketball in weeks due to strict stay-at-home measures in various states, Clifford stressed.

``I think the biggest challenge from a coach’s standpoint is to figure out how much we can put in with players,’’ Clifford said. ``We’re going to have at least two or three weeks here of individual work, so the earliest we could hope to get back (to full team practice sessions) would be three or four weeks from now.

``This is a new experience for everybody because never have we gone into a training camp where everybody hasn’t already been playing a lot of five-on-five,’’ Clifford added. ``Usually, in September, they come in early and play a lot of five-on-five and when you start training camp you are ready to hit with contact. This will be very unique, and we’ve got to do a very good job (in individual workouts) these next two-to—three weeks. I’ll be relying on (High Performance Director) David Tenney a great deal with this to see how good of shape we’re in and figuring out how much contact we can have when we start camp. You have to start at the beginning and start over like they haven’t played together all year and figure out how much offense and how much defense they can handle.’’

Clifford, who guided the Magic to the playoffs in 2019 in his first season as Orlando’s head coach, said he’s tried to remain in constant contact with the team’s players via phone calls, text messages and team-wide video conference calls. However, unlike during the season when his thoughts rarely stray too far from the task at hand, Clifford said his conversations have rarely had little to do with basketball.

``I’m more about talking to them and making sure that they are OK and we didn’t get into a lot of basketball,’’ said Clifford, who pointed out the work the Magic Strength and Conditioning staff did in getting cardio equipment and weights to players so that they could stay in shape while staying home. ``These guys are grown men and obviously very successful, but with leadership what you do has to make sense for the players. I just think with where we’re at – in such a difficult time for all of us – when people are worrying about relatives, friends and children, I just didn’t find it to be the right time to call up and talk about pick-and-roll defense. That’s the way we’ve done it and we’ve talked them about the opportunities to stay in shape. But we’ve taken a step back in terms of delving into basketball during this time.’’

When the Magic do get back going in full, Clifford is hopeful that his team can recapture the stellar form that it found in late February and early March. In the 12 games prior to the stoppage of the season – eight of them victories – the Magic offense shot up to first in the NBA in scoring (120.8), first in assists per game (32.1), first in field goal makes per game (45.1), second in field goal percentage (48.6 percent) and 13thin 3-point percentage (37 percent). Those are, of course, major improvements over the first 53 games of a choppy, up-and-down season (103.1 points per game; 22.8 assists per game; 37.9 field goal makes a game; 43.1 percent field goal percentage; 33.4 percent 3-point percentage).

``In terms of the team improvement part, it was pace of play, better screening and we were much more inside/out,’’ Clifford said on Thursday. ``We did a lot better job of finding ways to penetrate – with cuts and passing.

``The other part was, individually, we had a bunch of guys who played at a high, high levels,’’ Clifford added. ``(Nikola Vucevic’s) numbers and play were terrific, (Terrence Ross’) numbers were terrific, Evan (Fournier’s) was very good, (Aaron Gordon) was great and it was Markelle (Fultz’s) best stretch of play. D.J. (Augustin) was back and healthy and played well and the acquisition of James Ennis really solidified our team. The way he plays – shooting the ball and guarding primary scorers – really solidified our team. So, I’m hoping we can get back to that level again.’’

Giving Tuesday: Magic Aid Those Impacted by COVID-19

ORLANDO - Regardless of the forum – whether he’s out in public picking up food, attending church, doing charitable work or appearing virtually on a Zoom call – the first question that Orlando Magic forward Jonathan Isaac gets from fans is usually the same one every time.

And, no, it has nothing to do with watching Tiger King on Netflix – something that Isaac tried briefly and, quite frankly, didn’t care for at all.

What Magic fans most want to know about the nearly 7-foot Isaac is the condition of the left knee that he severely sprained on Jan. 1 during an Orlando victory in Washington, D.C. With the NBA season suspended because of the COVID-19 pandemic and the playoffs already pushed back by several weeks, fans are curious as to whether or not the Magic’s shot-swatting ace defender might make it back in time for the postseason.

``I’ve been getting that question from everybody and my answer has been the same,’’ Isaac said on Thursday night. ``If it does (work out), awesome … and if it’s doesn’t, bummer and I’ll get ready to strap it up for the next season. That’s pretty much where I am. I’m working every day with my rehab and if it lines up, if I’m 110 percent and everybody is comfortable with me playing, well then let’s do it.’’

Isaac, one of the Magic’s foundational pieces as an emerging star forward, answered questions about the health of his knee, his pregame rituals, his start in basketball, his time at Florida State University and his enduring faith on Thursday night in an online question-and-answer session with Magic season ticketholders. For nearly an hour on Thursday, Isaac took questions submitted by Magic season ticketholders to Fox Sports Florida sideline reporter Dante Marchitelli. As usual, Isaac was candid, open and engaging about how he’s tried to fill his time away from basketball for the past six weeks. One of the most important tips that Isaac offered to children looking to make it to the NBA was telling them the need to have strong character in everything they attempt to do.

``The biggest thing for me is always working on who you are as an individual,’’ Isaac said. ``What we do on the basketball court is only a percentage of what we’re called upon to do as NBA players. We’re teammates, we work for people and people who work for us. We’re a light to the community, kids look up to us and the media are always asking us something. So, who you are as a person and an individual is huge. It’s not just your game that gets you to the league; it’s your (character) that keeps you in the league.

``So much of it is, who you know, who speaks well of you, who you help, who you encourage and inspire, and who wants to be around you as an individual,’’ Isaac added. ``That part of what we do is huge.’’

Isaac, who was one of just two players in the NBA this season to rank in the league’s top 15 in both steals and blocks per game, regaled fans with tales of how unlikely his path to the NBA actually was. Hailing from a family that often preferred music over sports, Isaac only started playing basketball because of a Florida-based cousin who was already on an AAU team.

``Basketball was, like, just my calling, in a sense because it wasn’t something that I loved to do, and it just kind of fell in my lap,’’ Isaac admitted. ``I grew up in Bronx, New York for the first 10 years of my life and I’d just kind of play basketball at the rec center as a hobby with my three brothers.

``But when I moved to Florida with my mom, I had a cousin there (in Naples) and he played on an AAU team and I was tall and I got on his AAU team,’’ Isaac added. ``(Basketball) was just something that I did, and it wasn’t anything that I was actively pursuing. … Once I got into the EYBL, it was like, `I don’t know why I’m even playing basketball, but I’m good at it, I’m growing and it’s cool.’ When it was time to get recruited, I didn’t know anything about (college basketball). … I kind of came out of nowhere.’’

Of course, it helped out plenty that Isaac was rapidly sprouting up taller and taller with each passing year.

``My freshman year (of high school), I was just about 6-foot or 6-1, each year I was growing and growing, and I was always in pain, and my back was always aching,’’ Isaac said when asked by a Magic season ticketholder about his towering height. ``Every time I saw someone, they’d say, `Did you just get taller?’

``By my sophomore year, I was 6-4, junior year 6-7, senior year 6-10, and then 6-11,’’ Isaac continued. ``When I was a junior, I went to the foot doctor because I was having some pain in my Achilles and I was 6-6 or 6-7 at the time, and he was like, `Dude, your growth plates are wide open!’ He said, `You are going to be like 7-feet tall with a size 17 shoe.’

For the record, Isaac now wears a size 16 shoe and he responded to a fan question that his favorite shoe to wear out and about are the Jordan Ones.

Isaac also devoted a sizeable chunk of Thursday’s question-and-answer session to the work that he has done in the community to help feed those in need during the COVID-19 pandemic. Isaac’s Orlando-based church, J.U.M.P. Ministries partnered with Project Life, Inc. to provide hot breakfasts and lunches to school-aged children five days a week. Over the past six weeks, Isaac said the organizations have served approximately 6,000 meals to children who often depend on free or reduced lunches when school is in session.

In addition to helping serve and deliver some of the meals to children, Isaac has taken a proactive role in making sure Project Life has had enough resources to keep doing the work that they have done. Isaac is hopeful that Magic fans will do what they can to help out by logging onto ProjectLifeNow.org to either donate food or finances to keep the drive alive.

``First, shout-out to the DeVos family, (Nikola Vucevic), (Aaron Gordon), (Markelle Fultz), Mo (Bamba) and all the guys who have done so many things in Orlando and at home where they are from,’’ Isaac said of the charitable work that the Magic have done for several weeks.

``I’ve been out with (Project Life) a couple of times handing out food. Kids can not only show up to the church to get food, but we’re also bussing food to lower-income areas so that kids can get food,’’ he added. ``Every Saturday, I’ve been going to Sam’s Club and buying up a bunch of nonperishables, cookies and snacks and things for them to cook and I drop it off at the church for them to prepare for the week coming up. I’ve also donated financially, and the more the word gets out, the more families that can be taken care of.’’

Isaac has been trying to take care of the knee that he injured back on Jan. 1 when he drove to the basket against the Wizards only to be accidentally tripped up by guard Bradley Beal. Isaac said he has been using the weights and stationary bicycle that he keeps in his downtown Orlando apartment to build strength and maintain flexibility in his knee.

At the time the NBA was suspended on March 11, the Magic had won three games in a row, six of nine and nine of 12 to pull within a half-game of the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference standings. The late-season rally was reminiscent of the 2018-19 season when the Magic went 22-9 down the stretch to bully their way into the playoffs.

When the season does resume, Isaac is hopeful that there will have been enough healing in his knee that he can get back out on the court with his Magic teammates. When asked on Thursday by a Magic season ticketholder about his favorite NBA moment, he recalled the go-ahead 3-point shot he made in Orlando’s Game 1 defeat of Toronto in the playoffs last spring. Now, he’s highly hopeful that he can answer all the questions about his knee and be back for another playoff run this spring.

``My knee is getting better by the day and I’m looking forward to getting back to the arena pretty soon here to get back to work on my rehab at the arena and not just doing it in my home,’’ Isaac said. ``But I’m in good spirits and looking forward to getting back on the court.’’
