This Day in Jazz History - May 13, 1988

Coming off an emotional victory in Los Angeles in game 2, the Jazz headed home tied 1-1 with the Lakers. Behind 29 points, 13 rebounds from Karl Malone and 14 rebounds and six blocks from Mark Eaton, the “too young” Jazz won game three 96-89. The #5-seed Jazz would go on to lose the series in seven games to the eventual champion and #1-seed Lakers but would always point to this series a turning point in Jazz history. “We were able to hang with the best in the world and nearly beat them and went a long way with us,” said Malone.
