The Warriors Community Foundation, in partnership with Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) and The PG&E Corporation Foundation (PG&E Foundation), has granted a total of $641,000 to four Bay Area nonprofit organizations, equating to $160,250 each, as part of the Warriors’ Free Throws For Futures program, it was announced today. 

Through Free Throws For Futures, each Warriors’ made free throw during the regular season yielded $500 for four education focused nonprofit organizations working locally to improve opportunities and successful outcomes for youth.

Prior to yesterday’s game, the Warriors Community Foundation hosted a pregame reception and check presentation to celebrate this year’s Free Throws for Futures grant.

Golden State’s 1,282 made free throws through the 2023-24 NBA regular season slate of 82 games resulted in a total grant of $641,000. The amount raised by the Warriors Community Foundation, through a charitable grant by the PG&E Foundation, provided each of the four organizations with $160,250.

“PG&E and The PG&E Corporation Foundation are excited to support this program that combines the fun of sports with charitable giving to nonprofit organizations focused on the academic achievement and educational equity of Bay Area students,” said PG&E Corporation Executive Vice President, Corporate Affairs and Chief Sustainability Officer, and Chair of the Board of The PG&E Foundation Carla Peterman. Peterman also serves on the Board of Directors for the Warriors Community Foundation. 

Including the Free Throws for Futures and Hoops 4 Kids programs, the Warriors Community Foundation will&nbsp;have committed more than $4.5 million to Bay Area organizations over the 2023-24 season, a single season record for the organization. Since its inception in 2012, the Warriors Community Foundation has now delivered more than $36 million in impact to support education and youth development in the Bay Area.

The Warriors Community Foundation, in partnership with Salesforce and Taube Philanthropies, has announced a grant total of $566,000 to eight Bay Area non-profit organizations, equating to $70,750 each, as part of the Warriors’ Hoops 4 Kids program. Through Hoops 4 Kids, each Warriors three-pointer during the regular season, including the team’s four remaining games, yields $500 for eight non-profit organizations working locally to improve opportunities and successful outcomes for youth.

The Golden State Warriors hosted the 10th annual Warriors Community Foundation Poker Tournament, presented by MGM Rewards, on Friday, March 8, at Chase Center, raising over $3.5 million for the Warriors Community Foundation, a record high. Participating partners for the event included Confirmed360, Jason of Beverly Hills, Mercedes-Benz, Moët Hennessy, Rakuten and Silver Oak.

The live auction held during the event raised over $850,000 and was highlighted by marquee items including a bourbon experience with Stephen Curry surrounding the release of his one-time Player Exclusive Gentleman’s Cut bourbon, and the chance to play games of HORSE with Trayce Jackson-Davis, Chris Paul and Brandin Podziemski.

Attendees of the annual Poker Tournament included Warriors players and coaches and professional poker player Phil Hellmuth, who served as an emcee for the event. One hundred percent of the net proceeds raised will be awarded to Bay Area non-profits ahead of the 2024-25 NBA season as part of the Warriors Community Foundation’s annual grant cycle.

At the start of the 2023-24 season, the Warriors Community Foundation announced a record $3.5 million in grants to 62 non-profits as part of its annual slate, which tops last year’s $2.4 million as the most-ever awarded in a single season. The Warriors Community Foundation has now surpassed $35 million in impact to support education and youth development in the Bay Area since its inception in 2012.

The Warriors Community Foundation, in collaboration with the Institute of Contemporary Art San Francisco (ICA SF), Alive & Free – Omega Boys Club and the Good Tidings Foundation, has revealed a refurbished basketball court at Alive & Free, a community court in the Dogpatch neighborhood of San Francisco.

Warriors Community Foundation Unveils Refurbished Basketball Court at Alive & Free

The Warriors Community Foundation, in collaboration with the Institute of Contemporary Art San Francisco (ICA SF), Alive & Free – Omega Boys Club and the Good Tidings Foundation, has revealed a refurbished basketball court at Alive & Free, a community court in the Dogpatch neighborhood of San Francisco. This marks the third time the Warriors Community Foundation has refurbished this specific court, with the first coming in 2008, in honor of former Warriors player Stephen Jackson, and again in 2016, with the added celebration in honor of former Mayor of San Francisco Ed Lee.

Earlier today, Warriors Assistant Coach Kenny Atkinson was in attendance for the court unveil ceremony. The court dedication was followed by a Warriors Basketball Academy clinic for local youth.

The renovation work included the removal of all existing asphalt with new baserock and asphalt installed, new acrylic surface with play lines, new breakaway rims, fence repair, new paint, new banner, and an artistic court mural. The court mural was designed by artist Patrick Martinez and painted by the Bay Area Mural Program (BAMP).

“The ICA SF Is committed to helping&nbsp;make the Bay Area a better place through contemporary art and culture, and this project is a tangible example of that commitment,” said ICA SF Director Ali Gass. “Contemporary art and civic partnership can help lift and empower neighborhoods, improve communities, and create opportunities in small and big ways.”

The ICA SF is a free, non-collecting contemporary art museum located on the same block of Minnesota St. as the Dogpatch Community Court. Martinez created the mural overlooking the basketball court to celebrate graduates from Alive & Free’s violence prevention and leadership programs. The mural, which pulls influence from Martinez’s Pee-Chee series, was painted in collaboration between Martinez and the Bay Area Mural Program (BAMP). BAMP is a nonprofit organization of local artists dedicated to facilitating and creating public art.

Martinez’s work has been exhibited domestically and internationally and is in the permanent collections of many institutions including Whitney Museum of American Art, The National Museum of American History, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and many more. Martinez is dedicated to honoring and uplifting Black and Brown youth in California. His paintings reference vintage Pee-Chee folders, transforming the popular school supplies into protests against violence, displacement, and racial injustice.

Alive & Free was established in February 1987 by community leaders Dr. Joseph Marshall and Jack Jacqua to keep young people alive and free, unharmed by violence and free from incarceration. They provide young people with opportunity and support to build positive lives for themselves and to move into contributing roles in society.

“We are excited to share the dedication, brilliance and perseverance of our college graduates beautifully highlighted for the Dogpatch to see and celebrate as they use the court,” said Co-Founder and Executive Director of Alive & Free Omega Boys Club, Dr. Joseph Marshall. Our students are surrounded by our alumni photos in the classroom, but now will be able see generations of our alumni celebrated on their court. We are honored to share in our continued partnership with the Warriors as we work together to uplift our communities. The support of each organization encourages our youth to believe in themselves and to achieve their goals."

The basketball court at Alive & Free was refurbished in partnership with the Warriors, Institute of Contemporary Art with the help of The Good Tidings Foundation as part of the Makin’ Hoops program, created over 25 years ago by the Warriors Community Foundation and the Good Tidings Foundation, which has restored 90 basketball courts in the Bay Area.
