Warriors Survive Thunder Comeback Attempt

Established 1946 | 7-time NBA Champions

A dominant first quarter provided a much-needed cushion for the Warriors, and some savvy defense and timely shooting down the stretch helped keep the Dubs in front in Monday’s 128-120 win at Oklahoma City.

Stephen Curry led the way with 38 points and 12 assists, Klay Thompson had 28 points and Draymond Green logged 12 assists, including several big ones down the stretch as the Dubs shot 51 percent from the floor and made 20 3-pointers to pick up their third straight win.

DUBS BEND BUT DON’T BREAK
After taking an 18-point lead into the second quarter, the Dubs were outscored in each of the final three periods. And though Oklahoma City cut what was a 21-point deficit in the third quarter down to two on multiple occasions in the fourth quarter, the Warriors always had an answer. First it was a Klay Thompson 3-pointer that stymied a 13-4 Oklahoma City run that put the Dubs up by five. And after the Thunder had got back within two later in the fourth, Kevon Looney blocked a Shai Gilgeous-Alexander potential game-tying shot, and the Warriors converted on the other side of the floor with his second made 3-pointer of the quarter. From that point on, the Dubs’ advantage got no lower than five, and the Warriors picked up their third win in their last four road games.

Kevon Looney says no!

CURRY MAKES HISTORY … AGAIN
Stephen Curry shot 6-for-8 from the floor in the first half for 18 points. Those six field goals tied him with Wilt Chamberlain for the most made in franchise history. Already the franchise leader in total points, assists, made 3-pointers, steals and games played among others, Curry added the franchise record in total made field goals with 8:55 left in the third quarter when he netted a driving scoop shot.

WELCOME BACK WIGGINS
After missing the previous two games with a non-COVID illness, Andrew Wiggins returned to the starting lineup on Monday and came through with 15 points and 7-for-13 shooting. He made a 3-pointer on the game’s opening possession and as the Thunder made a furious run bridging the third and fourth quarters, it was Wiggins doing work in the paint to give the Dubs some much needed baskets early in the fourth quarter.

Andrew Wiggins with the great play!

“I thought Andrew looked great. Athletically, energy-wise, he just looked like himself,” Head Coach Steve Kerr said. “I loved the way he played tonight.”

FIRST QUARTER PERFECTION
The Warriors had their foot on the gas from the opening tip, and pushing the pace certainly paid off. All 15 made shots in the opening quarter were either layups (seven) or 3-pointers (eight), and all of those made shots were assisted. Curry had 13 points and five assists in the opening quarter, Thompson had 10 and Green dished out five assists in the period. A 16-3 run late in the quarter had the Dubs up by as many as 20 in the period, and the Dubs’ wound up needing every bit of that cushion to maintain the lead the rest of the way.

A highlight-reel play by Donte DiVincenzo!
