Game Preview: Warriors vs. Pelicans - 3/3/23

Dubs Looking to Complete Undefeated 5-Game Homestand

TAKE 3 VS. NOP
The Warriors have won their fourth consecutive game on Thursday and on Friday they will look to complete the perfect homestand when they take on the New Orleans Pelicans. If the Dubs playing the Pelicans on the back end of a back-to-back sounds familiar, that might because that’s happened twice already this season. The Warriors lost both of this season’s first two meetings against the Pelicans, both in New Orleans in November after the Dubs played the night before, and both were played without Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins and Draymond Green.

The Warriors will once again be shorthanded on Friday, but they go into the game riding a four-game winning streak. Winners of nine of their last 10 home games, the Warriors will take on yet another Western Conference opponent that’s close to them in the standings. The Pelicans come into Friday’s game occupying 10th place in the West, two games behind the fifth-place Warriors.

For the second consecutive game, the Warriors overcame a double-digit deficit on the way to Thursday’s 115-91 win over the Clippers. Poole paced the Dubs 34 points, Klay Thompson had 19 points and a career-high 11 rebounds and Draymond Green came within a rebound and an assist of a triple-double as the Dubs picked up their 19th win in their last 23 home games against the Clippers. » Full Game Recap

THIRD QUARTER DUBS
Going into Thursday’s game, the Warriors’ third quarter plus-minus differential (-26) was their worst of any period this season. But after turning around the game in the third quarter on Thursday, outscoring the Clippers 42-16 (+26), the Dubs are now a net even in the third period this season. That marked the second straight game the Warriors put forth a dominant effort in the third quarter, as they outscored Portland 39-17 (+22) in the period in Tuesday’s win. In each of those last two games, the Warriors bounced back from double-digit deficits, and Jordan Poole has been the catalyst. Poole, who had three tough shooting games coming out of the All-Star break, has bounced back with 29-point and 34-point games over the last two, scoring a combined 34 points in the third period.

NEW ORLEANS SCOUTING REPORT
On Dec. 30, the Pelicans were 11 games over .500 (23-12). Since then, New Orleans is just 9-20, including a 10-game losing streak from Jan. 16 to Feb. 2. The biggest difference has been the absence of their franchise player, who earned the nod as an All-Star starter, Zion Williamson. The Pelicans have played 34 of their 63 games this season without Williamson and are just 14-20 without the high-flying power forward. No team in the Western Conference has played more games without their points-per-game leader (Zion leads the Pelicans in scoring at 27.0 PPG). They played the entire 2021-22 season without Williamson, going 36-46 but made the postseason through the play-in tournament. New Orleans is slotted in 10th place this season as they attempt to get into the postseason again.

The Pelicans rank top 10 in Net Rating (+0.9), ranking slightly higher than the Dubs (16th; +0.5). The Pelicans are also top 10 in defensive rating (112.4). The Warriors and Pelicans shoot practically the same field goal percentage (47.8 percent vs. 47.7). Still, due to the gap in 3-point percentage (38.6-35.2 Warriors' advantage), the Warriors are the more efficient offense posting a 56.9 effective field goal percentage (accounting for the value and volume of the 3-point shot) compared to 53.8 for the Pelicans.
