Game Preview: Warriors vs. Lakers - 2/11/23

Warriors First to Play New-Look Lakers

Established 1946 | 7-time NBA Champions

WARRIORS HOST SOUTHERN CALI RIVAL LAKERS
The Warriors (28-27) host the Los Angeles Lakers (25-31), looking to build off their 21-6 record at Chase Center. The Dubs' last matchup against the Lakers was a 123-109 victory on Opening Night. The Warriors held L.A. to just 10-for-40 from three and forced 22 turnovers, leading by as many as 27 points.

Both teams have multiple veteran players that figure to be Hall of Famers, and both squads are looking to make a push toward the playoffs in these final two months of the regular season. Entering Friday’s slate of NBA action, the Warriors are in ninth place, 3.5 games ahead of the Lakers and one game behind Phoenix for sixth place – the top six teams in each conference qualify for the NBA Playoffs, while seventh through 10th place participate in a play-in tournament to determine the final two postseason berths. Currently, the Lakers would be on the outside looking in on the play-in tournament, but can certainly climb up the tightly packed Western Conference standings with a strong finish in the season’s final 26 games.

LAST TIME OUT
Despite Jordan Poole and Klay Thompson combining for 69 points and 14 threes, the Warriors came up just short in Portland, falling 125-122. Golden State had five consecutive minutes without a point in the fourth quarter, which Coach Steve Kerr attributed to settling for too many threes instead of taking the easy baskets at the rim.

"We had a few chances late for layups," Kerr said. "I thought we should've taken the layups rather than constantly searching for the 3s... That's something we'll discuss the next couple days."

The Warriors made 13 more 3-pointers than Portland, but were outscored 66-42 in the paint and 31-9 from the free-throw line. » Full Game Recap

ACTIVE AT THE DEADLINE
Los Angeles had a complete roster overhaul at the trade deadline. First, they acquired three rotational players D'Angelo Russell, Malik Beasley and Jarred Vanderbilt. D'Angelo Russell and Beasley give the Lakers some offensive firepower from the perimeter, and Vanderbilt is a versatile defender who can guard wings on the perimeter or help Anthony Davis inside. The Lakers also traded for Mo Bamba, a seven-foot center who can shoot the three and protect the rim. Bamba was the sixth pick in the 2018 draft. The Lakers have used 28 different starting lineups through 56 games, a number that should only continue to grow with these new faces.

L.A. LAKERS SCOUTING REPORT
On Tuesday, LeBron James became the NBA's all-time leading scorer, surpassing NBA icon Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. James passed Abdul-Jabbar with fewer field goal attempts, fewer minutes played and fewer games played. James is the only player in NBA history to rank top five in career points and assists, and no other player cracks the top 10 in both categories.

The Lakers rank sixth in scoring and ninth in field goal percentage, with most of those points coming in the paint. L.A. ranks second in paint points per game and field goal percentage in the restricted area. They've also been a strong rebounding group, ranking second in defensive rebounds per game and fifth in overall rebounds per game.

The Lakers are 18th in offensive rating and 20th in defensive rating, both ranking in the bottom half of the league. Offensively, the Lakers are 26th in the league in 3-point shooting percentage, but that's an area that can very well improve with this week's deadline deals, and Saturday provides their first opportunity to show it.
