The Jazz jumped ahead early, fell behind late, and then fought back to close out the Utah Jazz Summer League with an 84-78 overtime win over the Philadelphia 76ers Thursday night in front of 12,128 fans at EnergySolutions Arena.

Utah went 3-0 during the week, while Philadelphia went 1-2.

Bryce Cotton led all scorers with 20 points—including 12 in the fourth quarter and overtime—and added five rebounds, five assists and two steals. JaJuan Johnson scored 12 points, while Jack Cooley and Trey Lyles finished with 10 points each.

Jordan McRae scored a team-high 19 points for the Sixers.

Jerami Grant, who rose up and posterized Brock Motum with a hellacious one-handed slam early in the first quarter, had 10 points in only 17 minutes.

Jahlil Okafor scored 11 points and finished the week averaging 14.0 points and 8.3 rebounds in three games. He also went a combined 4-for-13 from the free-throw line.

After a 20-7 fourth-quarter run gave Philadelphia a 74-68 lead, the Jazz scored six straight points to tie the game (Cotton hit a jumper and two free throws, then Cooley bounced in two more free throws with 21.1 seconds left).

With the shot clock off, Okafor isolated in the post for a potential game-winner, but Cooley knocked the ball away with under three seconds left. Chris Johnson grabbed the loose ball, sprinted up the court and swished a 30-foot runner … but the Jazz bench had called a timeout, negating the shot. Cotton got an open look on a corner three at the buzzer, but it rimmed out.

The Jazz, though, kept the late-game momentum and dominated the overtime period.

Cotton and Cooley took over down the stretch for the Jazz.

Cotton scored 12 of Utah’s final 14 points, including eight straight points in overtime (he sank two jumpers off the dribble and went 4-for-4 from the line). With Danté Exum and Rodney Hood out, Cotton was Utah’s offense late in the game.

Meanwhile, Cooley hit the free throws to tie the game in regulation, came up with the huge steal to force overtime, forced a travel by Okafor on Philadelphia’s first OT possession, threw down a two-handed dunk off a nice bounce pass from Lyles, and then grabbed three straight rebounds as if his life depended on them—including one where he nearly ripped Furkan Aldemir’s arm off—to keep Utah’s momentum rolling in overtime.

The Jazz snagged 13 steals and forced 26 total Philadelphia turnovers, which led to 26 Utah points. On the flip side, the Jazz only turned the ball over 12 times, resulting in five Philadelphia points. 

Lyles entered the game to a standing ovation with 5:57 left in the first quarter. He went 3-for-9 from the field and 4-for-6 from the line … The Jazz signed Brazilian point guard Raul Neto to a multiyear contract Thursday. … Hood (rest) and Exum (ankle) did not play. … Forward JaJuan Johnson had a perfect shooting night (4-for-4 from the field, 4-for-4 from the line). … The teams combined to commit 55 fouls.

Both the Jazz and the Sixers will participate in the Las Vegas Summer League starting this weekend.

The Boston Celtics overcame a slow start to take down the San Antonio Spurs 85-71 Thursday night at EnergySolutions Arena. 

Both teams finished the Utah Jazz Summer League with records of 1-2.

After sitting out Tuesday’s game, Marcus Smart filled up the box score with 22 points, four rebounds, seven assists, three steals and a block for the Celtics.

Outside of Smart, Boston’s two first-round draft picks had their best games of the week. Terry Rozier finished with 16 points and seven assists, while R.J. Hunter, who was 0-for-8 from the field entering the game, went 4-for-4 from 3-point range en route to 18 points. 

Cady Lalanne led the Spurs with 13 points, while Roscoe Smith was the only other San Antonio player in double figures with 10 points. Kyle Anderson had nine points, seven assists and six steals.

Boston outscored San Antonio 27-13 in the second quarter to take the game over. Smart came alive after a scoreless opening period, scoring 15 second-quarter points to help erase an 11-point deficit. With time winding down in the half, Rozier missed a jumper but Smart wrestled the ball out of the scrum under the basket and put in a layup at the buzzer to make the score 40-35 at halftime.

Smart was worth the price of admission by himself.

On the night, he (in no particular order) … outscored the Spurs entire team 15-13 in the second quarter, drilled four 3-pointers, took three charges, threw two consecutive alley-oops that resulted in dunks for his teammates, absolutely stuffed Treveon Graham on a breakaway dunk attempt, grabbed a steal and dished to a teammate for a three-point play … and was pretty much as ferocious and awesome as usual.

Boston dished out 21 assists on 29 field goals and committed only 10 turnovers. Both Smart and Rozier had seven assists, while C.J. Fair and Royce O’Neale had three each. 

Both the Celtics and Spurs will participate in the Las Vegas Summer League starting this weekend.
