The Roundup—Mitchell, Bogdanović step up late to lead Jazz past Magic

In a game filled with dramatic swings in momentum, the Utah Jazz built a big lead only to fall behind and then storm back to claim a 109-102 victory over the Orlando Magic Tuesday night in Salt Lake City.

Utah (16-11) led by 18 points late in the third quarter before the Magic ripped off a 37-12 run to take the lead. Donovan Mitchell and Bojan Bogdanović, though, combined to score 17 points in the final four minutes as the Jazz closed the game on a 19-5 run.

"We had worked really hard to get to where we were, and sometimes [losing that lead] can be deflating," Jazz head coach Quin Snyder said. "The way we finished the game, going from down seven to where we were at the end, was really good execution."

Mitchell and Bogdanović finished with 30 points each, while Rudy Gobert stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, 19 rebounds and five assists.

Joe Ingles, who started for the sixth straight game, did his best Stifle Tower impression with 16 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks in 37 minutes.

"It's good to see multiple guys being able to put the ball in the basket," Snyder said. "I think that balance is something that we appreciate and need to take advantage of."

Point guard Mike Conley returned to the starting lineup after a five-game absense, but he was forced the locker room in the fourth quarter with another hamstring injury. Conley finished with seven points and a team-high six assists in 19 minutes.

D.J. Augustin came off the bench to lead the Magic (12-15) with 22 points, while Evan Fournier added 19 points and Nikola Vucevic double-doubled with 12 points and 11 rebounds in the loss.

Tuesday's Best

Mitchell registered his seventh 30-point game of the season, but how he scored those points—especially late in the game—was the key to Utah's comeback win. With the Jazz down by seven and reeling late in the fourth quarter, Mitchell drove into the lane and threw down a hellacious one-handed dunk over Vucevic, and then he sealed the victory with two acrobatic buckets in the lane in the final minute. Mitchell shot 13-for-23 from the field, and the Jazz are now 9-1 this season when he makes at least half of his shots.

Key Stretches

After going back and forth for the first 10 minutes, the Jazz went on a 14-2 run to take a double-digit lead. Ingles hit back-to-back threes, including one that just beat the first quarter buzzer, and then Ed Davis threw down a dunk and Conley converted a three-point play in the lane. A 3-pointer by O'Neale put Utah up 34-22 two minutes into the second quarter.

The Jazz led by 18 in the third quarter, but Orlando wouldn't go away. The Magic fought back to take a seven-point lead midway through the final period before a monster slam by Mitchell ended Orlando's 37-12 run and gave Utah a jolt of energy. Bogdanović hit a three, and then Mitchell put in a driving layup to cut Orlando's lead to one. Bogdanović bounced in a floater in the lane and then grabbed a steal and took it all the way for a layup to put Utah up by three with just under two minutes remaining. Mitchell scored twice in the lane in the final minute to seal the victory for the Jazz as the Magic shot only 2-for-7 over the final four minutes.
