Jazz Acquires Draft Rights to Trey Burke from Minnesota

SALT LAKE CITY (June 27, 2013) – Utah Jazz general manager Dennis Lindsey announced tonight that the Utah Jazz has acquired draft rights to guard Trey Burke (ninth overall pick) from the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for the draft rights to Shabazz Muhammad (14th overall pick) and Gorgui Dieng (21st overall pick).

The 6-1, 190-pound native of Columbus, Ohio spent two seasons at the University of Michigan. As a sophomore, the 20-year-old Burke was named 2013 Naismith Player of the Year (the first Wolverine to receive the award), John R. Wooden National Player of the Year, Oscar Robertson National Player of the Year, Associated Press National Player of the Year, Sports Illustrated National Player of the Year and Big Ten Player of the Year. He also earned the Bob Cousy Award for the nation’s top point guard. Burke led Michigan to the 2013 NCAA Championship Game and hit the game-tying three pointer to force overtime in a win over Kansas to advance to the Elite Eight.

Burke averaged 18.6 points, 6.7 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 1.6 steals while shooting 46.3 percent from the field and 38.4 percent from three-point range in 38 games his sophomore season. His 255 assists set a new Michigan single-season assist record while his 3.02 assist-to-turnover ratio ranked fifth-best in the nation.
