Jay Scrubb dribbles for the Celtics during a 2023 Summer League game in Las Vegas

Five Facts: Jay Scrubb

Jay Scrubb earned a two-way contract with the Celtics in July following a stellar Summer League showing in Las Vegas. The 6-foot-5 shooting guard brings three seasons of NBA experience to Boston and Maine, along with a stacked G League resume.

Now, let’s get to know the 22-year-old on a more personal level as he gets ready for his first season with the organization. Here are his Five Facts:

  • Scrubb was named 2019-20 Junior College Player of the Year as a sophomore at John A. Logan, a community college in Carterville, Illinois, after averaging 21.9 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and 1.4 steals per game. He would later become the first player in program history to make it to the NBA.
  • During his college offseason, the Louisville native competed with a handful of NBA players from his hometown, including former Celtics Rajon Rondo and Kelan Martin, who helped to give him the confidence to declare for the NBA Draft. He would wind up teaming up with Rondo on the LA Clippers during his rookie season.
  • Scrubb was drafted by the Brooklyn Nets with the 55th overall pick in the 2020 NBA draft, becoming the first JUCO player to be drafted since Donta Smith (34th overall by the Atlanta Hawks in 2004). Other current NBA players who played for Junior College teams include Jimmy Butler, Chris Boucher, Jae Crowder, and Richaun Holmes; however, those four players all eventually transferred to Division I programs, unlike Scrubb.
  • In his first NBA start with the Clippers on May 14, 2021, Scrubb logged 17 points, six rebounds, and three steals in just under 40 minutes of action against the Houston Rockets. He followed that performance with a 14-point, seven-rebound effort against the Oklahoma City Thunder in LA’s regular-season finale.
  • Scrubb ranked eighth in the G League in scoring during the 2022-23 season (22.3 points per game), while also being one of six players to earn at least 100 trips to the free-throw line.
