The Golden State Warriors secure their fifth straight win with a 116-113 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Monday night at Chase Center. Stephen Curry paced the offense with 34 points, marking his third consecutive game with 30+ points. Charles Bassey tallied a career-high 19 points, leading the reserves in scoring. The Warriors rallied after trailing by as many as 17 points, pulling out a clutch finish in the fourth quarter.
TRAILING IN THE FIRST HALF
The Suns took control early, turning a 14-6 scoring run into a 31-19 lead by the end of the first quarter. Charles Bassey was the only Warriors player to have more than one field goal in the frame. He tallied three buckets on four attempts, rising up for a monster dunk off the Yaxel Lendeborg assist in the final minute. Phoenix continued to attack, pushing their advantage to 17 points in the second quarter before the Warriors responded with a 12-2 run to cut the deficit down to six by halftime. Lendeborg started to heat up making back-to-back buckets and recording two 3-pointers in the quarter.
BATTLING BACK
Still looking for their first lead of the game, Stephen Curry got to work, draining a contested triple to open the scoring after the break. Doing what he does best, he added three more 3-pointers down the stretch. The veteran had half of the team's field goals in the quarter, shooting 6-for-9 with 18 points. Brandin Podziemski contributed to the third quarter surge with three triples and a last-second floater to even the game at 93-93 as they headed into the final frame.
The Warriors earned the advantage for the first time off a Bassey bucket to start the fourth but were unable to pull away as the Suns came back to tie it five times before the Warriors took the upper hand with four minutes left. Despite the Suns coming within one point with a late bucket in the final second, Golden State fended them off, making clutch free throws to take the win.
CURRY'S THIRD 30-POINT GAME
Stephen Curry recorded his third consecutive game with 30+ points, becoming the fourth player age 38+ in NBA history to have three straight games of 30+ points, joining Karl Malone, LeBron James and Michael Jordan. He earned six trips to the free throw line, sinking 11 of his 12 attempts, and making three in the last minute of the game to help secure the win.
BASSEY'S CAREER NIGHT
After getting off to a quick start in the first frame, Charles Bassey went on to record a career-high 19 points in 23 minutes off the bench. He shot 7-for-10 from the field while also commanding the boards, grabbing a team-high eight rebounds. Bassey's last double digit performance came against the Suns when he scored 11 points in their previous matchup on Oct. 24 this season.
