Curry’s 50 Points Not Enough in Loss to the Suns

Stephen Curry had the hot hand all night but the Suns used a three-point surge to hand the Dubs a 130-119 defeat on Wednesday night in Phoenix.

The reigning Western Conference Player of the Week, Curry made his first five shots of the night, surpassed 30 points by halftime and wound up with the 11th 50-point game of his career. As brilliant as Curry was, it wasn’t enough to slow down a Suns team that shot 51.2 percent from the floor and even better from 3-point range, hitting 21 of 40 (52.5%) from distance.

STEPH GONNA STEPH
Curry became the first Western Conference player to score 50 points in a game this season, and the third player in the NBA to score 50 points this week – Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid had 59 points on Sunday, the same day that the Cavs’ Darius Garland posted 51 points. How Curry went about that 50-point effort was scoring in a myriad of ways. He made seven 3-pointers, the fewest he’s ever had in any of his 11 50-point games, and several of his 10 two-point baskets came by attacking the rim.

Stephen Curry Drops 50 Points in Phoenix | Nov. 16, 2022

It was Curry’s third game with at least 40 points in his last five games, and Curry also led the team with nine rebounds while tallying six assists.

SUNS BALANCED ATTACK
All five Phoenix starters scored in double figures, including three players with 20-plus. Cameron Payne started in place of injured guard Chris Paul and led the team with a career-high 29 points, Devin Booker had 27 points and Mikal Bridges added 23. The Suns took a 72-65 lead into halftime and prevented any hope of a Warriors comeback with timely 3-point shooting.

After Donte DiVincenzo knocked down a pair of 3-pointers early in the fourth quarter to bring the Dubs within eight points, Phoenix responded with a 12-2 run, the last six points of which came via 3-pointers from former Dub Damion Lee.

0-FOR-THE-ROAD
With the loss, the Warriors fell to 0-8 on the road this season. It’s longest winless stretch on the road to start a season since the 1989-90 season, when the Dubs lost their first nine road games.

CURRY AMONG THE GREATS
Curry passed some NBA royalty and joined some more elite company with his 50-point effort. The two-time NBA MVP and four-time NBA Champion is now 45th on the league’s all-time scoring list (20,523 career points), having passed Hall of Famer and former Warrior Mitch Richmond (20,497). Additionally, Curry’s 11 career 50-point games moves him past all-time scoring leader Kareer Abdul-Jabbar (10) and ties him with Hall of Famer Allen Iverson (11) for the most 50-point games in NBA history.
