Game Preview: Warriors vs. Clippers - 3/2/23

Teams with Identical Win Percentages Battle at Chase Center

The Warriors have won the first three games of their five-game homestand and will host the Los Angeles Clippers at Chase Center on Thursday. The Dubs have won eight of their last nine games at home, including four in a row.

This will be the third of this season’s four head-to-head meetings against the Clippers. The Dubs and Clippers have split the season series thus far, with the Clippers winning their most recent matchup on Feb. 14 in Los Angeles. The Warriors and Clippers both have an identical win percentage (51.6%) as the Warriors are 32-20 and the Clippers are 33-31. The Dubs are in fifth-place in the standings compared to sixth-place for the Clippers, but whoever wins this game will be ahead of the other after Thursday.

Thursday is the Dubs' first home game during Women's Empowerment Month. The Warriors and Rakuten are celebrating through a variety of activations including a full-building Women's Empowerment Shirt giveaway.

STAYING ALIVE WITHOUT CURRY
With Tuesday's victory over the Blazers, the Warriors are now .500 (12-12) in games without Stephen Curry this season. Out of all the teams in the Western Conference, the Warriors are the only team to have a record of .500 or better without their leading scorer (excluding the Timberwolves, who have yet to play a game without theirs, Anthony Edwards). Several teams in the thick of the West playoff race have been without their stars for long periods and suffered. The Pelicans, without Zion Williamson for 33 games (13-20), and Suns, without Devin Booker for 27 (11-16), are the only teams without their top scorer longer than the Dubs. Western Conference teams, excluding the Warriors, are 60-161 (37.3%) without their points per game leader.

It's very encouraging that the Warriors have fared so well in comparison without Curry, especially considering they lost six of their first seven games without him. The Warriors average 115.8 points per game and 28.9 assists per game in their 24 games without Curry, both better than the Clippers' season averages.

L.A. CLIPPERS SCOUTING REPORT
Among Western Conference teams, only the Houston Rockets (7-20) and San Antonio Spurs (8-26) have a worse record against sub-.500 teams than the Los Angeles Clippers (11-23). The Clippers are on a three-game losing streak and have lost five of their last seven contests.

The Clippers made a significant splash in the buyout market, adding former Lakers' point guard and member of the NBA's 75th Anniversary Team, Russell Westbrook. The Clippers have been searching for a veteran floor general to set the table for their two star wings, Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. Westbrook is averaging 16.0 points per game, 9.3 assists and 5.7 rebounds in his first three games with the Clippers. Los Angeles has a very deep roster to complement their stars, which also means difficult rotation decisions for Head Coach Tyronn Lue. The Clippers also added Eric Gordon and Bones Hyland at the deadline to a backcourt already featuring Terance Mann, Paul George and Norman Powell.

The Clippers were recently involved in the second-highest scoring game in NBA history. They lost a double overtime game to the Sacramento Kings 176-175 on Feb. 24 in Los Angeles. The only game with more combined points was a 186-184 victory for the Detroit Pistons over the Denver Nuggets on Dec. 13, 1983.
