Game Preview: Warriors vs. Cavaliers - 11/11/22

EMPOWERED NEW LOOK
When the Warriors take the floor for Friday’s game against the Cleveland Cavaliers, they’ll be doing so with a new look. The team unveiled their 2022-23 City Edition uniform, and the jersey design is perhaps the boldest one yet. Designed by Bay Area artist Allison Hueman, the uniform sits at the intersection court, community and culture. The theme of the jersey is women’s empowerment, with a yellow rose serving as the centerpiece, representing women who change the game and lead fearlessly. BACK TO WORK
The Warriors should be well rested heading into Friday’s game, as it’ll be just the second game over a span of eight days. The Dubs previously played on Monday, and those three full days between games will match their longest layoff (also Dec. 22-24) this season, excluding the All-Star break. Friday’s game will be the first of this season’s two Warriors-Cavaliers matchups, and the Warriors will be looking to improve on their 4-1 home record.

LAST TIME OUT
Stephen Curry made a go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:23 left in the fourth quarter and the Warriors picked up a much-needed 116-113 victory over the visiting Kings on Monday night at Chase Center. Curry finished with 47 points, his first 40-point game of the season, Wiggins had 25 and Thompson had 16 points as the Dubs snapped their five-game losing streak. » Full Game Recap

HE DID WHAT NOW
Stephen Curry’s performance on Monday night was nothing short of amazing. The Dubs were hurting for a win in the worst way, having lost each of their previous five games on an East Coast road trip. Curry started the game hot, making his first seven shots of the game, but his finish was even better. He had 17 points in the fourth quarter, including the game-tying, go-ahead and game-preserving shots in the final minutes of the game. In addition to his scoring – Curry’s 47 was the second highest individual single-game output this season (Memphis guard Ja Morant had 49 points at Houston on Oct. 21) – Curry also logged eight assists and grabbed eight rebounds while not committing a single turnover. In fact, since turnovers were first tracked as a stat at the start of the 1977-78 season, Curry is the first player to have at least 47 points, eight rebounds and eight assists with no turnovers in a single game. Curry is leading the Dubs in scoring (32.6 ppg, second in NBA), assists (6.9 apg) and rebounding (7.1 rpg), and if he makes a 3-pointer on Friday, he would tally another first, becoming the only NBA player to make a 3-pointer in 200 straight games.

CLEVELAND SCOUTING REPORT
The Cavaliers made a stunning move this offseason when they acquired guard Donovan Mitchell from the Utah Jazz, and so far that acquisition has been paying off. Going into Thursday’s slate of NBA games, the Cavs are tied for second place in the East, and are tied for the third best record in the NBA. A three-time All-Star with the Jazz, Mitchell has been at the center of Cleveland’s success, ranking third in the league in scoring (31.9 ppg) this season. In fact, his eight games with 30-plus points this season is tied with Curry for the second most such games, trailing only Luka Doncic (9) of the Mavs. Mitchell leads a Cavs team into Chase Center that will be playing the fifth and final game of a road trip, the final four legs of which are in California. The Cavs had won eight straight but have lost their last two – a two-point loss to the Clippers on Monday and another close defeat in Sacramento on Wednesday. They’ll be hungry to get back on the winning track on Friday, and should they succeed in that it would be their first regular season win over the Warriors since Christmas Day 2016, and their first win of any sort against the Dubs since Game 4 of the 2017 NBA Finals.
