Team Makes Strong Impression on First Day

The familiar sound of the ball hitting the hardwood Tuesday at the Training Complex was much more official, as training camp got underway.

With the first practice of the season also comes first impressions. And for the group that spoke with media afterwards, those impressions were positive.

First Practice Gets Rave Reviews

How good was the 76ers' first session in Camden? Ben Simmons called it the best first practice he’s ever had.

The man at the helm was equally excited about the potential inside the facility.

“Since I have been in Philadelphia, this was the most purposeful -- cutting to the chase, getting to the point. Today’s session was excellent,” Brett Brown said.

Horford Leaves Early Mark

One of the biggest differences in the gym, both in stature and in gravity, was the presence of Al Horford.

Brown felt the presence of the five-time All-Star.

“For me it was incredible,” Brown said. “I’m blown away that he’s here. I’m just so excited to have him.”

Fellow big man Embiid shared Brown’s excitement for his new teammate, with whom Embiid has battled closely over the past few seasons.

Horford said that offensively, his first season as a Sixer will be different from his experiences in Atlanta and Boston, especially considering his position alongside another All-Star big man.

Horford added that the excitement in the gym was palpable, saying everybody felt engaged and brought positive energy the floor.

Brown also credited Elton Brand, Horford’s former teammate, for building the relationship with Horford that helped bring him to Philadelphia.

Big Focus on Big Defense

One of the most talked-about storylines for the new team is its defensive upside -- in which Horford figures to be a major factor.

With the pieces in place, and the team’s projected starting five already turning heads, it’s safe to say there’s lots to look forward to.

“A lot of great things can be accomplished with the people in this room,” Brown said.

Burke Impresses

One of those people in the room, point man Trey Burke, made a particularly strong impression in his first practice as a Sixer.

“Trey Burke played amazing today,” Simmons said. “He was killing.”

Burke’s new head coach agreed.

“I thought Trey was really good today. Trey has got that dynamic, dance-with-the-ball type game. I thought he was very good today,” Brown said.

Young Guys Hold it Down

Another pair of reserves, Matisse Thybulle and Zhaire Smith, also stood out to Brown, particularly with their activity on the defensive end.

A special day indeed, from top to bottom, on both sides of the floor.
