Summer League

The NBA announced today that Chicago Bulls forward Caleb Wilson was named to the 2026 NBA All-Summer League First Team.

Wilson averaged 23.5 points (T-5th among all Summer League players), 7.3 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 2.5 blocks (T-12th) in 27.7 minutes through four games of Summer League action. He was the only player during this Summer League session to average such minimums, including a 35-point performance in his Summer League debut (at MEM, 7/10) — the second-most points scored in a player's first Summer League game (Marco Belinelli – 37 in 2007).

Caleb Wilson named 2026 NBA All-Summer League First Team

Sam Smith

So I was in the lounge late Saturday night in the Las Vegas Wynn Hotel where just about the entire NBA is staying for Summer League, and these kids were talking about shows they loved.

They mentioned All American, Invincible, Transformers, Big Bang... Yeah, one said, all on The CW.

And I’m thinking... heck, they already named a TV network for Caleb Wilson?

Maybe next going down south on Las Vegas Boulevard to check the iconic sign, I'll expect to see, “Welcome to Fabulous Caleb Wilson.” And, oh yeah, “Las Vegas, Nevada.”

All American, Invincible, Transformers, Big Bang?

That sounds like what we’ve been hearing about the Bulls high flying/down-to-earth 6-10 rookie forward.

“It’s hard not to notice,” Wilson was saying after the Baby Bulls practice on Sunday morning, casually mentioning Kevin Durant was among the well wishers he encountered in the hotel after he seemed to make the Sphere second biggest in Vegas. “Saw a lot of people. He told me good job and to keep it up. But my goal is not to please everyone else; it’s to please myself. So I’m not complacent or feel I really accomplished anything. It’s a Summer League game. Of course, I see it (the attention), but it doesn’t really affect me.”

It’s affected Bulls fans, and they are pleased.

Wilson’s 35 points and seven three pointers in Friday’s one-point loss to Cameron Boozer and the Memphis Grizzlies became a national TV highlight and talk of the desert. It was 110 degrees outside, but no one was sizzling like Celeb Wilson.

“Pressure is self applied,” he said. “I don’t have to live up to anyone's expectations but mine.”

The Bulls, Caleb and the kids starting the intense part of the schedule 8 PM on Monday against Utah and No. 2 pick Darryn Peterson (assuming he plays as it’s a back to back and he didn’t play those much in college.)

Then on Tuesday at 7 PM, it’s Washington and No. 1 selection AJ Dybantsa (...and also assuming he plays as top picks often play just a few games in Summer League). Wilson said the Bulls haven’t said how many games he will play. Then it’s Thursday at 5 PM against the Lakers and a fifth game to be determined to finish out the schedule.

It’s not likely Wilson can keep up his pace considering his debut was close to all-time Summer League scoring records. Though we do know Washington let Bam go for 83... so maybe watch on Tuesday.

Though Bulls coach Tiago Splitter, who likely will coach his final Summer League game on Monday before handing off to staff, is trying to lower the flame some even as much as media and fans keep bringing Caleb World to a boil.

“That’s what you (media) guys are saying,” Splitter observed from his coaching bubble. “We respect (that, but) I didn’t say that. (Everyone has) got to understand this is a process and not every night is going to be sunny and make all the shots; it’s going to be up and down. But the trajectory has to be on an upward motion. That’s how we see it and part of the development.

“Of course, he had an unbelievable game, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be every game like that,” warned Splitter. “So he’s got to also understand that part and that we’ve got a process going (for the) long run. There’s not a game in the Summer League that is going to be (indicative) of anything good or bad. We are starting to create habits, terminology with them and show them how to play and being a pro. There’s not a Summer League game that is going to change his career.”

Aw, c’mon coach, we thought it was always Carnival if you were from Brazil.

This kid seems so grounded he’s like O’Hare during thunderstorms.

There’s explosions everywhere in the air, but he’s not being moved very much.

Chatting after practice with reporters, videographers and every form or media I no longer understand, Wilson, predictably, talked about winning the next game as his priority, reducing his turnovers.

“Continue what I did,” Wilson said with what seems his routine poise. "Get to the rim, play smarter, make better decisions. I had a couple of turnovers that were stupid, behind the back pass, bad pass on the sideline. Should have been a bounce pass. A drive, should have gotten back on defense quicker. Got to be stronger in the gaps. Anybody who plays with me knows I’m a great passer. I just didn’t have any assists that one game. Seems like people are going to pay more attention to me.”

It’s only Summer League and all that, but no one likes to be on the receiving end of those kinds of games. Peterson experienced that after his fast start in the Utah league last week. But the kid has perspective.

“Especially after my injury, I know it can be taken away quickly, so I try to approach everything with maximum intensity and effort,” Wilson was saying on Sunday.

He said the three-point shooting was no surprise to him after what he said was a recent daily routine of — I forgot to ask who was retrieving all of them — 2,000 to 2,500 practice shots per day the last few months. Maybe he meant video games... might have to follow up on that one.

He said he didn’t have time for all that practice in college because "I had to go to class. Had to be a student-athlete. Didn’t have the time to do that. That’s what’s good about the NBA: it’s your job.”

Wilson talked about another of his motivational markers, being cut from the 2024 USA junior national roster.

“That’s when I started to feel I had to prove myself,” Wilson related. “It’s hard to sit in a room when someone told you (that) you are not good enough.”

“Then a lot of people selected over me, there’s always a chance to play them, too,” reminded Wilson, who hopes to get Nos. 1 and 2 from this Draft starting Monday at UNLV. “Something I keep in mind even to this day. One of the only times in my life I had my heart broken.”

But there were those threes on Friday that can make you a network star. Amazing as it seems, it equalled the entire number of threes Wilson made in 24 college games, 25.9 percent overall shooting from that shorter arc.

Which the Draft nerds and gurus apparently missed.

After all, what are they doing watching all those college games? They couldn’t see the kid had a good shooting stroke and they weren’t letting him attempt threes in another of those overcoached college programs.

“I could shoot in college; just wasn’t my role,” Wilson reiterated. “I’m sure you guys have watched college basketball. We ran the Carolina break, rim running, nothing wrong with it. Appreciated my coach for allowing me to do what I did. No hard feelings.”

Actually, that’s why we don’t watch college basketball.

Wilson, emotional and sensitive as much as confident and composed, has talked about his regrets for his injuries that prematurely ended his season in February. He has blamed himself for the team’s tournament loss and the dismissal of coach Hubert Davis.

Who Bulls fans can now finally forgive. Thank you, Hubert.

It was Davis, then a New York Knicks guard, who was the beneficiary of the famous Scottie Pippen “phantom foul” in the 1994 conference semifinals that enabled the Knicks to steal the game and likely the series. Davis did make the two free throws for the win. And probably deny what would have been maybe the greatest season ever with the Bulls having a chance to win the NBA championship.

It was Davis, let go after North Carolina’s opening game tournament loss in March, who guided that shoot-less Caleb offense. Which the draft masters decided made Wilson the fourth of the Big Four. Because they all seemed to agree he was the most spectacular and athletic, maybe the best talent. But, oh, that shooting... pass.

“I’m glad I didn’t shoot threes in college because if I did I wouldn’t be here,” Wilson added with a smile.

“I don’t know what I‘d have been,” he said. “But I don’t think I would have been a Bull. I’m just excited for everything that’s happened, it’s all been in my favor.”

Yeah, we’re going to be watching a lot of The CW.

Caleb Wilson staying grounded going into Game 2 of Vegas Summer League

NBA Summer League, which the Bulls open 7 p.m. Friday against the Memphis Grizzlies, is sort of like sixth grade graduation. It seems pretty important at the time, but in a few months it’s difficult to remember what happened or who was there.

Except perhaps these next two weeks for the Bulls since this Summer League features at least three players who may make up the team’s core for years to come, top selection Caleb Wilson, No. 15 Dailyn Swain and last year’s lottery pick, Noa Essengue.

Most of the attention for the Bulls figures to be on their Most Likely to Succeed candidate, Wilson. But it’s hardly just about Chicago this time. The first week’s premier games feature the Bulls potential young star, the No. 4 overall draft pick Wilson, against the top three selections from his draft, No. 3 Cameron Boozer Friday, No. 2 Darryn Peterson and Utah Monday and No. 1 AJ Dybantsa and Washington Tuesday. All are prime time games in the Summer League’s featured arena.

Though spoiler alert as these things often go, the best players sometimes are shut down after a game or two as teams fear injury, if not exposure. And it is Vegas, so what they did last night even if it remains there sometimes needs to be forgotten.

Wilson says he’s ready to play all five Summer League games after having missed the last third of his North Carolina freshman season injured.

“I haven’t played in a long time, so I’ll play every minute if they want me to,” the high-flying 6-10 Caleb-in-the-box said earlier this week at practice. “Play as hard as I can when I get out there. Just create opportunities for teammates and show I’m (also) a good distributor, show I can shoot it. I want to be the hardest playing player out there. We’re playing kind of a free system. I’ll have the opportunity to do everything on the court. I’ll just make it happen.

“I’ll play as hard as I can and whatever happens, happens, but I expect to win,” Wilson said. “Whatever it takes to win is what I’ll do. It’s not a personal vendetta thing trying to score 30 points; just trying to win the game whatever it takes.”

Dybantsa and Peterson are the featured jump ball for the opening of Summer League Thursday night with Wilson and Boozer Friday, Peterson and Wilson Monday and Wilson and Dybantsa Tuesday in the marquee games in the Thomas & Mack Center on the UNLV campus.

Summer League appropriately enough in Las Vegas has become the NBA’s spotlight offseason show that features its potentially brightest young stars. It’s been awhile since the Bulls have headlined, and basically never since the Las Vegas exhibitions took on a Vegas nightclub show aura.

When Derrick Rose was a rookie in 2008, the Bulls were playing Summer League mostly anonymously in Orlando at the Magic’s practice facility. Rose, by the way, was awful his first game, struggling to adjust with a modest 10 points, and he shut it down after two games. Which is also the curse of Summer League for the first impression viewers. Rose was one of the worst players when he was there. One of the best I saw was Kris Dunn.

Nevertheless, judgments will be made this week.

“My goal with him…there’s a lot of expectations,” acknowledged Bulls coach Tiago Splitter, who is slated to coach the first two games before dishing to staff. “This is nothing anywhere close to what he’s going to be. So just be patient and enjoy the moment. All due respect, I just worry about our team, their development, how they approach every game, how we create good habits. This is a long run. This is not about the Summer League. This is how we create habits for these young players.

“That’s how I approach the Summer League,” Splitter said. “How I approached camp (this last week). They’re going to learn how to work every day, how we want to play and, honestly, it’s not about who we are playing against. But creating our habits, the standards this organization is going to have. You don’t have too much time to implement complicated things on offense and defense. Some people are going to be judged by those four or five games, whatever is. I don’t think it is fair, but it is what it is. I hope we have a good time. We’re really going to try to put them in a good position to perform.”

It seems like you can believe it with Splitter, seriously.

I especially liked something Wilson said about his first days with his new coach.

Wilson joked about Splitter’s really southern accent, the coach a native of Brazil. Of course, Wilson being from the American south it may be awhile before he understands dibs, the L, it’s da Bears, no ketchup on hot dogs, and he’s living in shicawgo.

“He’s really detailed,” Wilson said when asked about Splitter. “He knows what he wants you to do, pretty serious. You have coaches joking around. Tiago is pretty serious. Knows what he wants and wants it now.”

It’s become common in the NBA for some coaches, if not exactly to fear their players, to become perhaps a bit too deferential. You know, the kids don’t like to be yelled at. The justification often is a combination of, they may ask for a trade, or they’ll tell their friends and we won’t get free agents, and it is a kinder and gentler, more sensitive generation.

You don’t exactly have to be Bobby Knight or Billy Martin. But there’s nothing wrong with demanding excellence and expecting accountability. It’s encouraging that apparently from the first day Splitter is more interested in coaching than coffee.

That, of course, will be on display as the season progresses, and perhaps easier with a young, developmental group with low expectations like the Bulls currently have. Two-way G League additions Tobe Awaka and Jaylin Sellers will join the Summer Bulls along with Northwestern’s Boo Buie. The most veteran players will be second year G Leaguers Kennedy Chandler and Antonio Reeves.

“Very basic so far,” Splitter said about the practices. “Just give them an idea of how we want to play and approach every day in practice, games. Other (head) coaches have (coached Summer League) when they got the job. They want to set the tone, and especially having guys like Dailyn. They are going to be important for this organization. So I want to set a tone and work with the staff and get familiar with everyone. Caleb has been great, open to learn and speak up on what he thinks is the right thing to do. I think he’s a very bright kid and, of course, he’s still learning. But he’s hungry to get better and showing every day he’s working to get better. The size and athletic ability is special. It’s something you don’t see very often. Of course, he has stuff to work on and get better at and, of course, he’s going to get stronger and more balanced; he’s a really, really special kid.

“We want to be really good at the defensive end,” Splitter emphasized. “We want to win the possession game. That’s a big thing for us; that’s a battle. That’s how we want to approach every night, have more shots than the other team. You want to put them in good soil. Try to play fast, get early to the basket and the paint and affect the rebounds; that’s how I envision this team.”

Though everyone mostly still will be watching those matchups.

I did get a glimpse of Boozer and Peterson this week since there wasn’t much sports on TV; just some soccer games, I heard.

There were preliminary NBA Summer Leagues games in San Francisco, Sacramento and Salt Lake City, and Boozer and Peterson did face off in Utah. You can see where Boozer may take some time to adjust as he doesn’t have that quick movement or make up for the size with explosiveness. Though he shot threes well. Peterson is an impressive athletic talent who gets his shot easily, but he may be difficult to play with. He doesn’t move much if he doesn’t have the ball, constantly waving for it outside the arc. He has recorded good assist numbers, but holds the ball seeking his shot and tends to pass late in the clock. Though he looks like he could roll out of bed now and score 25 points in an NBA game. Which is impressive.

So we hope all the kids hang around long enough and want to play so we can get a show even if it doesn’t mean much and figures to be long forgotten by October.

“I’m excited for it,” said Wilson. “I don’t approach games against (one) opponent (differently) than I would (against) anyone else because I feel that leads to different play. So I’ll just go out there and play as hard as I can. I’m excited for the opportunity on the biggest stage…of the summer. Been waiting on this opportunity for a long time, excited to play. A little jitters because I haven’t played in so long, but I’ll be good. The message is our identity as a team. Make sure we are the hardest playing team and make sure we rebound the ball. We have a great group of guy and I think we’ll win. So really excited for what we’ve got later this week.”

And now there’s also Summer League championship rings. Time for the kids to enjoy summer.

sam-smith-why-this-years-summer-bulls-are-different-than-past-years

Sam Smith: Why this year's Summer Bulls are different than past years

It was — okay, maybe just one of — the biggest Bulls mystery of the spring and summer.

Was the long gone Noa Essengue, the Draft Lottery pick from last year who missed basically all season with shoulder surgery, now having grown into being the new Wemby, a seven-and-a-half-foot monster who must have traded his family cow for some magic beans and is about to become the Bulls’ new giant.

Maybe not so much, except for the hair, which probably adds another five inches. The Bulls listed Essengue at about the same 205 pounds and maybe an inch more than his 6-foot-10 Combine 2025 height. And Essengue said Monday as the Bulls kids opened practice for this weekend’s Summer League that what’s mostly new about him is his shoulder.

“I feel amazing,” Essengue told media members. “Nine months I didn’t play; back out there…I feel amazing. New coach, new teammates. I feel great. Nobody has seen me play since I got my new shoulder, so I feel great.”

By the way, he feels great assuming some of the sideline and on-court reporters are interested.

“I just want to be back,” Essengue said. “Not playing was a hard time; I won’t lie. Being back out there (I) have a new feeling for basketball. I have a new shoulder. so I have to learn how to play again. I just want to be back on the court and compete again. Summer League is a great time for that.”

Essengue measured himself as 98% recovered with some range of motion work to continue.

So do the Bulls, too, have a long armed, unicorn alien?

New Bulls coach Tiago Splitter, who said he will coach the first two Summer League games starting Friday against Memphis and Cameron Boozer, said Essengue could be used at three (small forward/wing), four (big forward/wing) or five (center) in this new, alleged — I don’t agree, but mostly I am not being consulted — position-less NBA.

“Very long and expectations are higher because (he’s a) 6-foot-10, 6-foot-11 player, can put the ball on the floor, shoot a little bit, can do a lot of things,” said Splitter. “I want to see him in the games and how he approaches every possession, how he fights every possession. I’m going to put a lot of pressure on Caleb (Wilson), Dailyn (Swain), on Noa. Those are the guys that really push this team in the Summer League and (it will) be contagious with teammates, the effort, how we are going to play, share the ball; we are going to rebound. We’re going to defend. Caleb, Dailyn and Noa, they have to set the tone. I think he (Essengue) can be three, four, five easily.”

But if, coach, you had to select a position, if only for the pregame introductions?

“I’ll say he’s a four,” Splitter admitted. “Honestly, the wings now in the league basically have to be a ball handler that creates and have wings that either are crashing, rebounders or especially three-point shooters, and you have to have a big. The NBA has changed so much. You can’t even call one, two, three, four, five. You can play with five wings sometimes and no point guard. Last year (as Portland coach), I played three, four months with no point guard. Basketball, you can play in many ways. The NBA is turning to a position-less league because everybody has got to be able to do everything.”

It’s a nice theory, and it does appear to be the philosophy that Bulls new Executive Vice-president of Basketball Operations Bryson Graham intends to pursue.

A case can be made, at least on paper now with the Bulls, for such a so called position-less type team with a presumptive starting lineup of five players, including Essengue, between 6-foot-8 and 6-foot-11. It’s unlikely, especially after missing all but two games last season, that Essengue will start. And at barely over 200 pounds stretched over that nearly seven feet or so, it’s unlikely Essengue is anywhere near capable of taking on the physical inside play in the NBA.

The Bulls roster that appears to be lining up for this first trial run season appears to be similar to the roster Splitter had last season with the Trail Blazers, heavy on drivers and light on shooting. Which likely is why Splitter is emphasizing rebounding.

His mostly point guard-less Trail Blazers last season were one of the weakest three-point shooting teams in the league. But they made up for that by being one of the best offensive rebounding teams in the league and attacking the basket with drivers like Deni Avdija, Shaedon Sharpe and Scoot Henderson, the latter when he finally did play.

The Bulls, at least to start this season, appear to have a similar group with the main players, especially in Summer League, of Wilson, Swain and Essengue more accustomed to attacking the rim than parachuting jump shots.

The theory with players that size is the belief they can switch the screens and thus have similar sized defenders to defeat the screen. Which requires all to have similar defensive abilities, which generally is not typical.

So at least for the Summer League squad led by Wilson, Swain and Essengue, who project as perhaps something of a future core with Wilson and Essengue lottery picks and Swain at No. 15, the blueprint may be more like the collegiate 40 minutes of hell model of long, active, wings chasing, deflecting and playing fast before the veteran part of the roster works in more shooting.

And since no one but the surgeon, rehab guys and his hair stylist have seen Essengue for the last year, there’s going to be almost as many eyes on him as the acclaimed Wilson.

“As long as I’m on the court, I’m not going to complain,” the personable Essengue acknowledged, “But I’d say (my role is) three, four. Play hard every game. It’s an amazing group. Play hard and compete every game; we want to be the best team. Go out there, play hard and compete.”

If he and they can achieve that it could be a giant fee-fi-fo-fum of a start.

Yuki Kawamura signs two-way contract with the Chicago Bulls!

yuki-kawamura-dominates-in-summer-league-%f0%9f%94%a5%f0%9f%87%af%f0%9f%87%b5-20-pts-10-ast-vs-utah

Yuki Kawamura DOMINATES in Summer League 🔥🇯🇵 20 PTS & 10 AST vs. Utah

Matas Buzelis is the best player for the Summer League Bulls, who 5 p.m. Monday (CT) hope to find the win column after a pair of opening weekend defeats.

Rookie Noa Essengue coming off a double-double is the most promising Bulls player and hopes he can return following a quad injury in Saturday’s loss to Sacramento.

The player who probably is the most fun and who you just can’t take your eyes off despite his averaging 3.5 points off the bench is the 5-foot-8 wind up toy from Japan, Yuki Kawamura, who likely is competing for a two-way contract that would see him split time with the Windy City Bulls.

The Bulls could do well to bring Kawamura to Windy City this season less for a future backup guard than one of the more appealing attractions in basketball.

“He’s (Yuki) picking up full court, doing everything on the court; he’s the definition of heart over height,” Buzelis said about the diminutive point guard who tracks the basketball court like the glaring spikes in a heart monitor. “He plays so hard. To be on the floor with him means a lot; he’s an amazing player, amazing human.”

Who just simply can take your breath away with his frenetic pace, passing and kinetic energy.

Kawamura made nearly a half dozen of the most remarkable passes we’ve seen from a Bulls player.

He mimicked Magic Johnson on an outlet pass with a behind the back/look away to Lachlan Olbrich for a layup just before halftime Saturday. He went full court after a steal (two per in about 20 minutes per game) for a lead bounce pass layup to Javon Freeman-Liberty. He bounced a pass on the run through the legs of Kings center Maxime Raynaud for another Olbrich score. He lobbed one up to Maozinha Periera for a slam dunk. Though he didn’t shoot well, Kawamura has a pure stroke from three, and the two games he played for Memphis last season not in mop minutes he was a combined 5-for-10 on threes.

“Organization is great; good opportunity for me,” Kawamura said in English, though he primarily does his interviews in Japanese for a klatch of media for Japan. “I just want to meet expectations from my fans, my coaches, my teammates. I truly appreciate their support, but I could not meet expectations today.”

Kawamura has been hard on himself after shooting 2-of-10 in the two games with seven assists and eight turnovers.

“I’ve got to be better,” he said. “I am still learning from every game. I’ve got to prove what I can do. I’ve got to be better.”

He became a professional in Japan as a high schooler and worked his way to a two-way contract with the Memphis Grizzlies last season given Ja Morant’s parttime playing status. In Japan, Kawamura was a league MVP, assists leader and Rookie of the Year. He played in 22 games last season for the Grizzlies. The two games when he played more than 10 minutes he scored in double figures.

Which is hardly to suggest he’s got a chance to earn a roster spot with the Bulls, especially considering the team’s surfeit of guards.

He’s mostly trying to crack the NBA’s ecosystem with a two-way G League contract to start and chose the Bulls for the Summer League opportunity. He’s been first off the bench, and even in Friday’s disastrous opener coach Billy Donovan III mentioned Kawamura in trying to unearth something positive about the game.

“Yuki kind of settled us down, his ability to go by people and speed,” said Donovan III. “Some good moments with Yuki; definitely a catalyst to get in the paint and playmake and generate easy shots for others.”

This also isn’t some sort of scam for attention, curiosity or facade.

There’s substance to this baby faced fan favorite.

Though Kawamura probably is only about 5-foot-6 (listed at 5-foot-8), the history of the NBA features democratization at point guard among the likes of Muggsy Bogues, Spud Webb, Earl Boykins, Keith Jennings and Charlie Criss.

Kawamura shares with them the decisiveness, creativity and agility that suggests he can play in the NBA. He’ll be taken advantage of because of his size. A few times opponents this weekend literally tossed him aside in the two games. But he continually cracked back. He plays tough and fearless with a confident audacity.

These Summer League games often are more physical than especially early season NBA games considering the desperation of the players. They are playing for their lives and careers. Kawamura has backed away from no one. He challenges defenders and is so quick into the lane and back out that he can create space to get off his shot, and he’s willing to navigate deep into the lane no matter the size of the defenders. Some of those turnovers came on did-you-see-that passes the Bulls players weren’t ready for with so little practice time.

In some respects, there feels like a Caitlin Clark factor with Kawamura.

She’s certainly on the elite level in her league, though she’s not the best player. But there’s no one fans want to see more. You just don’t look away. It feels like that when Kawamura is out there. If I were going to a G League game, I’d probably want to see this kid play more than any of the other prospects who are closer to gaining a place in the NBA. The best G League players are the ones who can play a role with an NBA team, so often the bigger talents get overlooked.

Kawamura, 24, also is a jet out of the backcourt, which is the style the Bulls want to play.

There’s certainly too many guards to even consider him in Chicago. But this guy is worth a second look. Because you may blink with what you’re seeing and have to look again. They always tell us it’s a game, and this kid makes it fun.
