Warriors Acquire Guard Gary Payton II and Draft Picks

Golden State Sends Center James Wiseman to Detroit in Multi-Team Deal Including Atlanta and Portland

The 2022 NBA Champion Golden State Warriors have acquired guard Gary Payton II from the Portland Trail Blazers along with unprotected 2026 and 2028 second round picks from the Atlanta Hawks in a four-team trade which also includes the Detroit Pistons, the team announced today. In the deal, the Warriors send center James Wiseman to the Pistons, Memphis’ 2026 second round pick (protected 31-42) and its own 2028 second round pick to the Trail Blazers, Detroit sends forward Saddiq Bey to the Hawks and the Trail Blazers will receive forward Kevin Knox II from the Pistons along with three conditional second round picks from the Hawks.

Gary Payton II is Back With the Golden State Warriors

Payton II, a member of the Warriors 2022 championship team, is averaging 4.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.07 steals and 17.0 minutes in 15 games (one start) this season for the Trail Blazers. The guard appeared in 71 games with the Warriors last season, averaging career-highs in points per game (7.1), rebounds (3.5), steals (1.35) and minutes (17.6). He played in seven postseason games (two starts) for Golden State, averaging 6.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.3 assists in 15.8 minutes per game. Undrafted out of Oregon State, the seven-year NBA veteran has also played with the Los Angeles Lakers, Milwaukee Bucks and Washington Wizards.   

Wiseman, 21, is averaging 6.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 12.5 minutes in 21 games this season for Golden State. Overall, the center has appeared in 60 games (27 starts) over three seasons with the Warriors, averaging 9.9 points, 5.0 rebounds and 18.3 minutes per contest. He missed the entire 2021-22 season recovering from surgery to repair a meniscal tear in his right knee. Wiseman was originally selected by Golden State with the second overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft.

Knox II, 23, has appeared in 42 games (one start) for the Pistons this season, averaging 5.6 points and 2.6 rebounds in 14.1 minutes per game. The University of Kentucky product owns career averages of 7.4 points, 2.9 rebounds and 18.1 minutes per game over five seasons with the New York Knicks, Hawks and Pistons. Knox was originally selected by the Knicks with the ninth overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.
