Pelicans shootaround update presented by HUB International: Trio of Pelicans discuss their progress amid injuries

Tyreke Evans, Quincy Pondexter and Norris Cole are all making progress toward returning to the court, but none of the New Orleans Pelicans trio has been given a specific timetable yet for when they might be back in uniform. All three players spoke to the media following Friday’s shootaround, providing updates on their status. Some of the most noteworthy points from their meetings with reporters this morning at the Smoothie King Center:

  • Evans (right knee surgery) has started running on an ultra-G treadmill, which is non-weight-bearing, an initial step in his rehabilitation. He has not run on a basketball court yet or done the cutting required of every player. Evans: “I’ve been rehabbing, trying to get the strength back… I know my body. Once I feel like I can stop on a dime and be me (as a player), that’s when I’ll be ready (to play).”
  • On recent practice days, Pondexter (left knee surgery) has been seen on the court working on his shot and working out with Pelicans assistant coaches. Pondexter: “I’m feeling good. I have a little bit to go. I’m excited about finishing out the rehab pretty well and hopefully getting on the court soon. I really don’t know yet (about an exact return date). We still have evaluations to do. I’m meeting with doctors and training staff. Hopefully it’s not too long, but it’s still out indefinitely right now.”
  • Cole (left ankle sprain) said he has never experienced anything similar to the severity of his current ankle injury, which he sustained Oct. 11 in practice. “We’re taking it step by step, not skipping any steps, Cole said of his work to come back. “I’ll know when it’s ready and I can be back out there.” Asked what’s been most frustrating about missing games, the point guard said, “I put a lot of work in all summer to have a big year this year. The biggest thing is having to watch, knowing that I could help.”
