Pelicans center Jonas Valanciunas’ 2023-24 NBA season overview

An ironman campaign for the native of Lithuania was highlighted by the center playing in all 82 games, meaning the Pelicans could count on their starting pivot to be there every night. Less reliable was the specific role Valanciunas filled, with his minutes per game going from 25.5 prior to the All-Star break to 19.3 following the midseason hiatus. As a result, his counting stats took a similar dip. Through that decrease, Valanciunas never complained and remained a true professional, focusing on what he could do to contribute on or off the court. “I’m a team player,” he said during April 30 exit interviews. “Whatever it takes. The big picture is winning. We didn’t do that this year enough. As I said to the coaching staff, I’m here to help. I’m here to do everything to win games. Stats are not important when you look at the (team) record.” Valanciunas, who will become an unrestricted free agent July 1, was uncertain about what the future holds, but described 2023-24 as more positive than negative. “It was a good season,” he described. “At moments we were really good. It was ups and downs, like every season. But I love the group I played with. We did some great stuff on the court. It was memorable.”

If you had asked New Orleans fans and media members prior to the season which Pelicans player had the best chance to emerge as a 50/40/90 shooter, answers such as Trey Murphy and CJ McCollum would’ve been extremely common. After all, the pair of offensive threats are among the NBA’s elite perimeter marksmen. As it turned out, Jones came the closest among the Pelicans to achieving the rare statistical feat, turning in splits (see above) of 50/42/87. The latter percentages represented gigantic improvements for Jones, who had finished at 47/34/76 in 2022-23.

Asked during April 30 exit interviews how he was able to make that leap shooting-wise, the often-understated Jones replied, “Continue to trust the work. Staying in the gym, continuing to play with a ton of confidence.”

Jones again established himself as a bona fide First-Team All-Defense candidate, spearheading New Orleans to a No. 6 ranking in defensive efficiency for a second straight season. That led to his second playoff trip in three seasons, though a 4-0 sweep vs. Oklahoma City meant a difficult close to Year 3.

“I think everybody’s a little disappointed in the way things ended, but I also think we did improve, competed and played really hard this year,” he said. “You’ve got to be OK with going out and putting forth your best effort, and coming up short.

“As long as we continue to work, I think the sky’s the limit. We’ve got to come back in the summer, continue to work hard and continue to build on what we’ve been building.”

Only future Hall of Famers Stephen Curry and Luka Doncic averaged more three-pointers made per game during the regular season than McCollum (3.6), whose perimeter gunning helped lift New Orleans up to a middle-of-the-pack 18th in that category (12.6). For many years, the Pelicans were a low-volume, low-output three-point squad, but McCollum has been the club’s most prolific threat since his arrival in a February 2022 trade with Portland. His shooting again yielded major dividends during a 4-0 April road trip, which nearly pushed New Orleans into the playoffs, as the 11-year NBA veteran lit up Phoenix, Portland, Sacramento and Golden State by going an absurd 29/47 from beyond the arc (62 percent). Unfortunately for McCollum – as well as for several teammates – a cold-shooting playoff series vs. Oklahoma City meant a sour close to the season. McCollum will replicate his 2023 offseason, when he arrived at training camp in elite condition. “For me it’s about, what does the team need?” he said. “You need me to catch-and-shoot threes? I can shoot (42) percent. I just did that. Shooting is something that translates. (Improving) assist-to-turnover ratio. Defensively, I’ll do more conditioning, more lower-body lifting, more lateral quickness (work).”

McCollum scored 15 second-quarter points during his team’s 45-point stanza. He totaled 28 points and was 8/13 from deep.

En route to the second trip to the NBA playoffs of his career, Ingram essentially experienced two separate seasons within a season. From Opening Night through mid-March, he appeared in 63 of New Orleans’ first 69 games, helping to lead the Pelicans into contention for a top-four seed in the Western Conference. However, a March 21 knee bone contusion injury not only sidelined him for a 12-game span, but also appeared to negatively impact him when he returned for Game 82, a pair of West play-in games and the 4-0 first-round loss to Oklahoma City. Ingram poured in 20-plus points in 34 of those first 63 games he played, but only did so once over six postseason contests, seemingly providing evidence that he wasn’t fully himself physically. Asked during April 16 exit interviews how he views the season overall – given the team’s regular season success, followed by a drop to No. 8 seed and playoff disappointment – Ingram responded, “I guess every story doesn’t have a good ending. We know some injuries messed us up a little bit. But we can do things internally to make us a better ballclub and organization (in the future).”
