The New Orleans Pelicans and Ochsner Andrews Sports Medicine Institute joined Ursuline Academy of New Orleans on October 27th to celebrate the unveiling of the school’s newly enhanced athletic training room, a project designed to strengthen athlete care, injury prevention, and recovery resources for Ursuline students. Through a combined significant investment, the Pelicans and Ochsner Health helped transform the space with new athletic training equipment, medical supplies, and Ursuline branded enhancements that will serve generations of student athletes.

“One of the greatest investments we can make is in the health and wellbeing of young people,” said Elicia Broussard Sheridan, Vice President of Community Relations and Youth Sports Development. “Through our partnership with Ochsner Health, we are proud to help provide Ursuline Academy student athletes with enhanced resources that support injury prevention, recovery and overall wellness. We hope this upgraded training room serves as a lasting asset for the school and empowers students to perform at their best in competition, in the classroom and in life."

The renovation provides Ursuline Academy with state-of-the-art equipment and resources to support the health and wellness of its student athletes. Among the additions are a modular ice machine and storage bin, therapeutic recovery and rehabilitation equipment, emergency heat illness treatment resources, a mobile whirlpool, and a variety of athletic training tools designed to assist with injury prevention, treatment, and recovery. Custom Ursuline branding was also incorporated throughout the space, including wall graphics, training tables, and a commemorative plaque.

“Providing student-athletes with the right resources is an important part of keeping them healthy, preventing injuries and supporting a safe return to play,” said Scott C. Montgomery, MD, orthopedic surgeon, head team physician for the New Orleans Pelicans and section head, Ochsner Andrews Sports Medicine Institute. “This enhanced athletic training room gives Ursuline Academy a dedicated space to support the health and safety of its student-athletes and reflects our shared commitment to helping young athletes thrive both on and off the field.”

The unveiling took place during a schoolwide assembly featuring appearances by Pierre the Pelican and members of the Pelicans entertainment team. Students participated in a basketball relay and heard remarks highlighting the importance of athlete health, safety, and wellness. The program also included a Pelicans autograph raffle and an opportunity for Ursuline student ambassadors to tour the renovated training room and learn how the new equipment will enhance support for the school’s athletic programs.

The athletic training room project reflects the ongoing commitment of the New Orleans Pelicans and Ochsner Health to invest in youth development, education, and community wellness across the Greater New Orleans area. By providing schools with access to high-quality health and athletic resources, the organizations continue working together to help local students succeed both on and off the field of play.

Perhaps it’s a bit too early to start mailing out the Sixth Man of the Year campaign materials, but forward Saddiq Bey enters Wednesday’s home game vs. Utah (7 p.m., Fox 8-WVUE, GCSEN on TV; WWL on radio) as the NBA’s leading bench scorer, averaging 15.6 points. Bey has New Orleans company near the top of that leaderboard, with second-year big Derik Queen ranked No. 10 on the same list (minimum five games played, via NBA.com), producing 12.4 ppg, all as a reserve. The Pelicans are also getting notable scoring punch from guard Bennedict Mathurin (7.1).

Add it up and New Orleans (3-4) has the league’s second-best bench in terms of scoring average (46.7, behind only Memphis). Pelicans backups are also seventh in rebounding (18.6 rpg, partly due to Queen’s 7.7 rpg, second among NBA subs) and fifth in minutes played.

“People might think I’m biased, but we’ve got to be up there for the deepest team in the league,” Bey said after Wednesday’s morning shootaround. “I think every guy on our roster can be a major contributor any night. It just helps through the long 82 games. We need everybody, whether it’s in practice, the games, on the road. They did a great job of having so much depth, that anybody you call on can help win.”

Queen (20 points, 18 in the first half) and Bey (18 points, 16 in the second half) took turns providing vital offense during Monday’s dramatic overtime victory at Memphis. With Queen rolling early, Bey bided his time until more opportunities arrived later.

“It was just one of his nights,” Bey said of Queen’s early eruption. “For me, it’s like, ‘Hey, how can I continue to try to feed that?’ We were winning and playing well, playing through him at that time. Nights like that, any guy in the second unit, we’ve got to feed the hot hand, whoever has it going.”

Streak: Lost 5 (vs. LA Lakers, vs. Memphis, vs. San Antonio, vs. Portland, at San Antonio)

Go-to guy: Fourth-year guard Keyonte George leads Utah in scoring at 19.6 ppg. He generated 19 points and 10 assists in the Jazz’s narrow 120-119 win over the Pelicans on Oct. 23 in Salt Lake City.

On the rise: Pass-first point guard Isaiah Collier started a total of 65 games over his first two NBA seasons, but in Year 3 with the Jazz, he’s coming off the bench. Collier dished seven assists to go with 10 points against New Orleans on Oct. 23.

In the clutch: Utah is 1-3 in clutch games this season. George leads the Jazz in clutch scoring with 11 points, but he’s shot just 4/15 from the field in those situations.

Three-point attack: Bottom 10 in makes, attempts and percentage (33.1, ranked 22nd), Utah is off to a subpar start from beyond the arc. Individually, instant-offense sub Brice Sensabaugh has been an outlier at 44.8 percent, going 13 of 29.

Keyonte George, Darryn Peterson, Ace Bailey, Lauri Markkanen, Jaxson Hayes

Notes: The Jazz sustained a damaging early-season injury when Jaren Jackson Jr. was sidelined by a right MCL tear. Jackson is out Wednesday, as is center Jusuf Nurkic (plantar plate tear). Backup big Mo Bamba (ankle) is questionable. … Utah is 0-1 on a challenging four-game West road trip, which continues Friday in Dallas (NBA Cup) and Sunday at Minnesota. The Jazz are 1-4 at home; those five games on their home floor are tied for the most any team has played through the first two weeks of the regular season. … Utah leads the all-time series vs. New Orleans by a 49-34 margin, but the Pelicans have won eight of the last nine meetings.

Jeremiah Fears, Herb Jones, Trey Murphy, Zion Williamson, Karlo Matkovic

Notes: Murphy (patella) and Jordan Poole (ankle) are probable. Yves Missi (knee) is out. … Over the Pelicans’ three-game winning streak, seven players are averaging double-digit points, led by Williamson at 20.7. Williamson is shooting 68.6 percent from the field during that span, while averaging 7.7 rebounds and 2.7 steals. He’s fourth in the NBA in steals average (also 2.7), only trailing Dyson Daniels, Kris Dunn and Collin Gillespie (minimum five games played). … New Orleans’ next three games are also against West opponents, including Friday’s NBA Cup home tilt vs. Minnesota, followed by a California back-to-back at the Clippers and Golden State on Sunday and Monday, respectively.

Pelicans vs. Jazz: Injury Report, Game Preview 11/4/2026

The New Orleans sideline is generally boisterous when something positive happens on the court, with players springing up from their seats on the bench to celebrate a defensive highlight or game-changing basket. The reaction may be even more raucous when a certain third-year center rises above the rim for an alley-oop slam, or drains a three-pointer from his favorite spot – the right corner.

Karlo Matkovic moved into the New Orleans starting lineup after the team’s 0-4 start to the regular season and immediately helped change the results, as the Pelicans beat Sacramento, Atlanta and previously-undefeated Memphis with the 6-foot-10 Croatian in the first unit. The 25-year-old is averaging 15.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, 2.0 steals and a block since becoming a starter, topped by his career-high 25-point night in Monday's overtime road victory against the Grizzlies. He shot 5/8 from three-point range and is 8/14 on treys as a starter. Overall, he’s shooting 10/19 from distance, ranking fourth in the NBA at 52.6 percent (via NBA.com, minimum 10 makes).

In addition to those numbers, the vibes Matkovic brings to the locker room and court seem to be boundless.

jamahl-mosley-interview-pelicans-practice-11-3-2026

Jamahl Mosley on taking care of the basketball, Derik Queen | Pelicans Practice 11/3/2026

“I’ve said this about Karlo before, he’s one of those special ones – he’s about everybody else,” Pelicans head coach Jamahl Mosley said of Matkovic’s selfless connection with other players. “He’s about the team. You can see it when he makes a shot, or makes a big play, that his teammates celebrate him. That says everything about him as a human being, but also as a basketball player, that they want to celebrate the work he puts in, because he wants none of the light, but he’s always willing to give it (out). That’s why his teammates will celebrate him the way that they do.”

One challenge for Matkovic since he debuted with the Pelicans in October 2024 has been a lack of consistent playing time. As a rookie, he only played in six of New Orleans’ first 42 games. Last season, he again experienced a lengthy DNP stretch. Even to begin 2026-27, he did not play in the Oct. 21 regular season opener vs. Indiana, then logged single-digit minutes in subsequent defeats to Utah and Denver.

He was a key reserve in a second loss to the Nuggets (18 minutes) on Oct. 28, delivering his usual dose of energy and hustle, setting the stage for Mosley to name him a starter prior to the next night’s first Pelicans victory over Sacramento.

“It’s an awesome feeling,” Matkovic said of being a first-stringer for three straight wins. “I’m blessed to be starting in the NBA, at (this) level. It’s something to be happy about. I cherish it. I enjoy every game. I appreciate the coaches believing in me.”

“(I expect) nothing less from Karlo,” said forward Zion Williamson, who tied Matkovic on Monday with a team-best 25 points in Memphis. “He’s shown that over the years he’s been with us: Whenever his number is called, he always steps up.”

Mosley on center Yves Missi’s progress recovering amid a left knee bone bruise, sustained Oct. 23 in the second game of the season at Utah: “Yves is doing a little bit better. He’s able to get on the floor, get some standstill shooting, moving around a little bit, but still not 100 percent. But his ability to get on the floor and be around these guys has been great.”

For the seventh game of a long NBA regular season, victories don’t come much sweeter than New Orleans’ triumph Monday in Memphis. Not only did the Pelicans hand the league’s last unbeaten team its first loss, but the visitors did so after not being able to hold a nine-point lead in the final minutes of regulation, seemingly on the verge of experiencing a crushing turn of events. New Orleans persevered by bouncing back in overtime – despite Memphis guard Ty Jerome’s superhuman exploits – to prevail by a point, on Jeremiah Fears’ pair of go-ahead free throws with 7 seconds left.

The inability to close out a game on the road was reminiscent of the third game of the season at Denver nine days earlier, when the Nuggets forced OT against all odds. The difference this time for New Orleans was that the Pelicans steadied themselves in a back-and-forth extra five minutes.

“These guys did an unbelievable job to stay poised,” said head coach Jamahl Mosley, whose team won its third straight game after an 0-4 start. “The ability to find a way to get the (defensive) stops we needed and to execute, that’s what I’m most proud of.”

Zion Williamson scored nine of his team-high 25 points in OT, including sinking a mid-range jumper with 1:16 to go that put New Orleans up by four. “He gets a lot of credit,” Fears said on Pelicans postgame radio. “He was big down the stretch. He made the right play every time. We put the ball in his hands and we trusted him.”

11: New Orleans three-pointers made in the second half, after they only sank three triples prior to intermission. That surge in perimeter marksmanship pushed the Pelicans into a 100-95 lead through three quarters and later a 124-115 edge when Karlo Matkovic (tied for team scoring honors with 25 points, 5/8 from beyond the arc) nailed another trey from the right corner with 2:35 remaining. The Grizzlies answered with a 9-0 run, all from Jerome baskets.

8: Pelicans total turnovers, an exemplary performance in terms of taking care of the ball, particularly during an intense, physical Southwest Division battle that ended up lasting 53 minutes.

20, 18: Points off the bench for Derik Queen and Saddiq Bey, respectively. Queen helped stake the Pelicans to an early lead by scoring 18 prior to halftime, while Bey had 16 points in the final two quarters. Bey authored 10 of his team's 24 points in the fourth period.

Pelicans 135, Grizzlies 134 (OT): Karlo Matkovic 25 points | Postgame wrap

The formula that resulted in New Orleans turning an 0-4 start into consecutive wins Thursday and Saturday seemed crystal clear: Intensity and aggressiveness at both ends of the floor, resulting in paint dominance on offense, combined with disruptive defense that’s generating an avalanche of turnovers.

The Pelicans totaled 146 points in the paint over their home victories against Sacramento and Atlanta, adding to a league-best average of 62.7 paint points (Victor Wembanyama-led San Antonio is next at 55.7). On defense, the Kings and Hawks committed 44 turnovers, a chunk of those resulting in New Orleans’ 53 fast-break points. Those easy buckets also factored into the Pelicans shooting 60 and 57 percent from the field, respectively.

The challenge Monday shifts to an opponent that remains the NBA’s lone undefeated squad. Memphis (6-0) enters the Southwest Division clash in a groove on both sides of the ball, ranked third in offense and second on defense, pounding Sacramento in its most recent game Saturday, by a 136-105 margin. To learn more about Memphis’ perfect start to 2026-27, we checked in with Grizzlies writer Michael Wallace, a senior editor and analyst for Grind City Media.

Pelicans.com: Memphis has been one of the NBA’s biggest success stories early in the season. What’s been the most surprising aspect to you of the unbeaten start?Wallace: The collective poise this team has played with in the second half of games, especially in the fourth quarters. They used a 17-2 closing run to beat the Warriors, a 17-6 closing spurt to get past the Kings, a clutch finish from Ty Jerome to outlast the Kings and a 66-45 onslaught in the second half to sprint past the Blazers … all on the road. Impressive for the fourth-youngest team in the NBA.

Pelicans.com: What aspect of the Grizzlies’ start was the most expected by you, based on what you projected entering 2026-27?Wallace: That the second unit would be one of the most productive groups of reserves in the NBA. Even during their struggles the past two seasons, the Grizzlies have always had a second unit that found a way to shift the momentum in games. With a reloaded group of reserves anchored by productive vets in Jerami Grant and Isaiah Stewart, it’s little surprise that quality of play doesn’t drop off when subs enter.

Pelicans.com: Based on so many head-to-head meetings over 20-plus years, many New Orleans basketball fans are quite familiar with Memphis teams, who always seem to have a defined identity, such as the “Grit and Grind” squads from that era. What is the current club’s “calling card” going to be?Wallace: Relentless play and explosive depth. This team also has a toughness that resembles how those Grit and Grind Grizzlies played a decade ago, plus some of the offensive firepower that emerged at times during the Next Gen era from the recent playoff seasons. These Grizzlies have a collective chip on their shoulder, embracing the fact that many may have overlooked and underestimated them nationally.

Pelicans.com: What aspects of this specific matchup vs. New Orleans does Memphis need to focus on in its attempt to open this four-game season series with a Monday victory?Wallace: The rebounding battle will be huge for Memphis on both ends of the floor. The Grizzlies snagged 15 or more offensive boards in four of their first five games. They also want to get out in transition, where they rank among the NBA’s best in transition scoring and transition defensive metrics. They essentially define success based on their ability to dictate pace and deliver a pounding on the glass.

Pelicans.com: What’s one thing fans might be surprised to know about the Grizzlies?Wallace: The Grizzlies won their first four road games to open a season for the first time in franchise history and are now in the midst of their first four-game homestand of the season.

Notes: Murphy (patella) is probable. Yves Missi (knee) and Jordan Poole (ankle) are out. … Williamson remains atop the NBA steals leaderboard with an average of 3.2 (Kawhi Leonard averaged 3.5 steals to begin the campaign, but in only two appearances). … New Orleans is No. 14 in the NBA in net rating (plus-1.7), which ranks higher than a couple teams that have winning records, including Oklahoma City (minus-0.7) and Denver (minus-1.6). The Pelicans are ninth in the Western Conference in that stat. … Over the two-game win streak, Fears has averaged 21.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 10.0 assists, 2.0 blocks and 1.5 steals. He shot 18/28 from the field (64 percent).

Cedric Coward, Cam Spencer, Jaylen Wells, Cameron Boozer, Zach Edey

Notes: Scotty Pippen Jr. (back) is doubtful. Quinten Post (ankle) is questionable. … The Grizzlies are red-hot from three-point range to open 2026-27, leading the NBA at 41.6 percent accuracy. The only other team at 40-plus percent is Golden State. Memphis is averaging 16.0 makes (second) despite only firing the 13th-most attempts (38.5 per game). By comparison, New Orleans averages 8.8 makes and 28.3 attempts, both fewest among the 30 teams. … Point guard Ty Jerome, who sat out Saturday’s win due to back tightness, is tied for 11th in the league in scoring average with Philadelphia guard Tyrese Maxey, both putting up 25.8.

Pelicans vs. Grizzlies: Injury Report, Game Preview 11/2/2026

New Orleans has figured out at least one way to fix its early-season issues in close games: Avoid playing in them. For a second straight game Saturday, the Pelicans built a big lead and kept the opposition from seriously threatening in the fourth quarter, wrapping up a homestand with a pair of wins, following an 0-4 season start.

New head coach Jamahl Mosley’s vision to make New Orleans a more aggressive defensive club is beginning to yield dividends, with the Pelicans coming up with 18 steals Thursday – their most in a game in 10 years – then 15 more steals Saturday. The hosts jumped on the Hawks with a 35-18 first quarter and outhustled their guests for a vast majority of the Halloween matchup.

Mosley: "The effort and the energy that our guys played with, that toughness that we've asked them to play with, that was closer to 48 (minutes, which is) what it needs to look like."

Former Atlanta forward Saddiq Bey provided New Orleans with valuable scoring punch off the bench, netting 25 points in 26 minutes, also recording four steals, one shy of his career high. Jeremiah Fears authored a second straight excellent outing, with 20 points and seven assists. Mosley used a starting lineup featuring Herb Jones and Karlo Matkovic for a second straight win, after neither were in the first unit during the 0-4 start.

8/46: Atlanta three-point shooting, a severely damaging performance that equals 17 percent accuracy. The Hawks didn’t seem to get many wide-open looks, often firing over a defender off the dribble. On the other end of the floor, New Orleans took a minimal number of treys at 7/17. Those 17 attempts are the fewest the Pelicans have fired in a game since April 1, 2023 (by the way, they also won that game, against the Clippers).

19: Zion Williamson steals over his six games this season, after he had three vs. Atlanta. He entered Saturday leading the NBA with an average of 3.2 thefts and maintained that figure.

+41: Jones plus-minus over the two games he started to wrap up the homestand. The Pelicans outscored the Kings by 27 points with the ace defender on the floor Thursday, then won his minutes Saturday by 14 points.

Monday night basketball on the road against a Memphis team that entered Saturday sporting a 5-0 record, the NBA’s only remaining unbeaten squad. The Grizzlies hosted Sacramento in FedEx Forum an hour after Pelicans-Hawks tipped off in New Orleans.

On Saturday, New Orleans halted a four-game losing streak in head-to-head meetings with Atlanta. The end of the Pelicans’ Mardi Gras trip this season is in State Farm Arena on Feb. 10. That’s the final stop on a seven-game excursion entirely against Eastern Conference opponents.
