Below are the most notable NBA players born on May 28.
Jerry West (1938)
“The Logo” is one of the most impactful players and figures in NBA history, and his silhouette served as the model for the NBA’s logo. In his sensational 14-year career, he was a 14-time All-Star and began his NBA days as the No. 2 pick in 1960 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers. He spent all 14 seasons with the Lakers, finishing Top 5 in MVP voting eight times. West also finished All-NBA 12 times and took down Finals MVP in 1969 in the lone instance where the Finals MVP went to a player on the losing team.
West lead L.A. to an NBA title in 1972, averaging a league-best 9.7 assists per game. He retired in 1974 and averaged 27 points, 5.8 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 2.6 steals per game in his career. West earned a Hall of Fame induction in 1980 as a player, but that wasn’t the end of his story. As the GM for the Lakers, West won another six championships.
Glen Rice (1967)
Rice was the No. 4 pick in the 1989 NBA Draft by the Heat. He played the first five of his 15 overall seasons with Miami, averaging 19.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.2 steals per game. He became a bigger star when he was traded to the Charlotte Hornets in 1995.
That was his first of three straight All-Star appearances, posting a career year in 1996. Rice finished fifth in MVP voting that year, averaging 26.8 ppg, 4 rpg and 2 apg. Those were his only three seasons in Charlotte, with Rice playing two seasons for the Los Angeles Lakers after that. Rice closed his career with stints for the Knicks, Rockets and Clippers before officially retiring in 2004. He averaged 18.3 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 2.1 apg and 1 spg in his career.
