Youth Spotlight - Nathan Beana

For this month’s Youth Spotlight we speak with Nathan Beana. Nathan has participated in multiple youth basketball camps with the Orlando Magic. Read our interview with Nathan to learn more about his experience with our camps.

Nathan, how old are you currently and when did you first begin playing basketball?

I’m 13 years old and I've been playing basketball for around eight years. I played on my first basketball team when I was 6 years old. There was just something about basketball that was more exciting than other sports. I’ve played and enjoyed it ever since, playing on multiple teams throughout the years.

What position do you typically enjoy playing?

I typically enjoy playing point guard, but I can also play shooting guard. I enjoy being able to direct and start all the plays as the point guard, but I also feel comfortable playing at the wing spots.

Are you involved in any leagues/teams?

Yes. I currently play for TNBA South on the 7th grade AAU team. I really enjoy being on my team. I’ve played for other leagues in the past, but TNBA is the one I like the most. And when I’m not playing for my AAU team, I play with the Jr. Magic league.

How many Orlando Magic youth basketball camps have you attended?

I usually attend about three camps each summer and I've been going for the last three to four years. I also attend special camps and clinics throughout the year.

What do you enjoy about our camps?

Basically everything! I feel like the worst part of going to the camps is having to leave them. The coaches are amazing! All of the drills, games, and scrimmages have helped me improve so much, and you get to meet new people at the camps. It just feels like everything about them is great. My favorite one has been the overnight camp.

Who is your favorite instructor?

Choosing my favorite instructor is difficult. Every instructor is amazing and has helped improve my game and bring it to the next level. But if I had to choose one, I would have to say Coach Jack Lutzeier. Coach Jack has helped me improve tremendously, not just as a player, but as a person too. He always encourages me to work hard, even when I’m tired, and to practice my shooting and ball handling every day. I’ve been training with him for a year and half now.

Have you been to Magic games in the past?

Yes. I’ve been to a lot of Magic games in the past. My family and I have season tickets, so we try going to as many games as we can. I even had my 13th birthday there, because they’re so fun!

Who is your favorite Magic player?

My favorite Magic player is D.J. Augustin. Although he might not be an All-Star, he is definitely the most fun to watch in my opinion. It’s so fun to see him do some crazy passes or show off his handles. And most of all, I can actually learn from him since he plays the same position as me.

Do you have anything cool planned over the summer (besides our camps of course)?

Occasionally I’ll go to Universal with my family and/or friends. We’re also going on a cruise in August. And I’m actually really looking forward to going to the overnight basketball camp in a couple of weeks.
