On paper, Wood might be Dallas’ second-best player. You certainly could say it’s Spencer Dinwiddie, Dorian Finney-Smith or Tm Hardaway Jr., but Wood should benefit most playing alongside Luka Doncic. While his scoring average, not surprisingly after Houston added Jalen Green through the draft, dipped a bit last season, the 6-foot-10, 214-pounder shot over 50 percent from the field for the fourth straight season. His best scoring performance came on March 21 when he erupted for 39 points and made eight 3-pointers against the Wizards.&nbsp;&nbsp;

While he hasn’t been quite the same since getting traded to Chicago, Vucevic had several terrific games last season, including on Feb. 4 when he posted 36 points and 17 rebounds against the Pacers. The key for the Bulls going forward is figuring out how to become a better defensive team. They ranked 23rd&nbsp;on that end in 2021-22. In addition to a healthy Lonzo Ball, Chicago needs improvement from Patrick Williams, their fourth overall pick in the 2020 draft.&nbsp;

One could argue that there were more deserving Most Improved Player award candidates last season than ever before. Although he didn’t get any votes, Carter was certainly one of them, averaging career highs in points (15.0), rebounds (10.5) and assists (2.8). He also extended his shooting range, making a career-best 70 3-pointers. Some of his best performances came against the league’s top centers, including on Feb. 14 when he tallied 25 points and 12 rebounds against Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets.&nbsp;

The Cavs have made a lot of good moves the last few years, which is why some consider them title contenders this season. Even though he’s no longer on the team, it all started with them selecting Collin Sexton in the 2018 draft. Then the next year, they made another great draft night decision by taking Darius Garland fifth overall. A couple years later, they got involved in the blockbuster James Harden-to-Brooklyn trade by snagging Allen in that four-team deal. A year ago, they chose Evan Mobley in the draft, and just a couple weeks ago acquired three-time NBA All-Star Donovan Mitchell from the Jazz. While it remains to be seen if Cleveland has enough to truly contend with the East’s other powerhouses, including Boston, Milwaukee and Philadelphia, they’ve put themselves in a good spot – for this season and likely beyond.&nbsp;

The Suns decided to match the Pacers’ four-year, $133 million offer sheet over the summer given to Ayton, who averaged 17.2 points on a career-best 63.4 percent shooting from the floor in 2021-22. It remains to be seen how committed Phoenix is to him, but undoubtedly for them to remain in the championship conversation, they need the 6-foot-11, 250-pounder to play up to his potential. That wasn’t the case in the Suns’ playoff series against the Mavs, especially in Game 7 when he had just five points and four rebounds. He was terrific, however, in the prior series against the Pelicans, especially in the closeout Game 6 win when he scored 22 points on 10-of-12 shooting.&nbsp;

Porzingis, after getting traded to the Wizards, looked far more like the guy that was an All-Star before his ACL injury in 2018. He scored 20-plus points in 10 of the 17 games he played in with Washington to close out last season. Most assume the Wizards are a middle-of-the-pack team in the East, which may prove to be true. But, with a healthy Bradley Beal and Porzingis, to go along with some key veteran additions in the offseason, including Monte Morris, Will Barton and Taj Gibson, perhaps Washington is a team that could sneak up the standings.&nbsp;&nbsp;

One of the summer’s biggest storylines was Minnesota acquiring Gobert from Utah for a mix of players and draft picks. The T-Wolves gave up quite a lot for a player that doesn’t dazzle offensively, but with that said, Minnesota has struggled mightily on the defensive end for years now. Getting a three-time DPOY will almost certainly change that, but to what extent? How well will Gobert and Karl-Anthony Towns mesh, and do the Wolves, after trading a bunch of their role players in the deal, have enough depth to compete with the other elite teams in the Western Conference?&nbsp;

A legitimate argument could be made that Adebayo is the NBA’s best defender right now. If he didn’t miss 26 games last year, perhaps he would have won the league’s Defensive Player of the Year award, which went to Marcus Smart. Adebayo finished in fourth place. The Heat, who came up one win short of making the NBA Finals, held opponents to a league-low 41.3 points in the paint per game in the 2021-22 regular season.&nbsp;

Last season, Embiid became the first center since Shaquille O’Neal in 1999-00 to lead the NBA in scoring, averaging 30.6 points per game. He had 13 40-plus-point performances, including on Jan. 19 when he erupted for 50 points against the Magic, his second 50-point game of his career. The reoccurring question with him is whether he will be healthy come playoff time, which wasn’t the case in either of the last two seasons.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

It might surprise you to find out that the last player who won three consecutive MVP awards was Larry Bird from 1984-86. Jokic will have an opportunity to become the next player to accomplish this after claiming the honor each of the last two seasons. The 6-foot-11, 284-pounder currently has 76 triple-doubles in his NBA career and is three away from jumping Wilt Chamberlain for sixth most in league history and the most by a center. He had 19 of them last season, including on Jan. 19 – yes, the same night Embiid had his big night – when he recorded 49 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists in a win over the Clippers.

Honorable Mentions: Tobias Harris/Kyle Kuzma/John Collins/Jaren Jackson Jr.

All four deserve consideration for this list. Harris had an excellent series against the Raptors in the first round of last year’s playoffs, but struggled against the Heat in the next round. Kuzma has evolved into a jack-of-all-trades type player, recording his first career triple-double last season. He also had a 27-point, 22-rebound game. It was apparent that Collins wasn’t himself in the postseason against Miami after an injury-plagued regular season. Having two guards like Trae Young and Dejounte Murray to run pick-and-roll with should make the game easier for him, if he’s healthy of course.&nbsp;Jackson, one of the best defensive players in the league, had foot surgery over the summer and it remains unclear when he will be back for the Grizzlies.

Which version of Randle will the Knicks get? The 2020-21 one that was an All-Star, won the Most Improved Player Award, averaged 24.1 points, and shot 41.1 percent from 3-point range? Or the 2021-22 one that was very inefficient and scored 20-plus points 13 fewer times than the previous campaign? If he plays anywhere close to the former type, the Knicks, now with Jalen Brunson and a further developed RJ Barrett, could find themselves back in the playoff mix.&nbsp;

The Kings made headlines at the trade deadline last season when they acquired Sabonis as part of a blockbuster deal that sent Tyrese Haliburton to the Pacers. Kind of weird, but Sabonis averaged the same exact number of points (18.9) in 47 games with Indiana and 15 games with Sacramento last year. But what didn’t translate after the trade was his perimeter shooting, as he knocked down just four of his 17 3-point tries (23.5 percent). The biggest thing for the 6-foot-11, 240-pounder, though, is not being too much of a defensive liability. Mike Brown, hired last spring to be the Kings’ new head coach, is known for his defensive principles and tactics, which should help Sacramento make at least some progress on that end of the floor.&nbsp;

How many times have you wondered where Green would rank on a list like this if he didn’t play with Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, and under Steve Kerr? Green is a rarity in that he’s one of the league’s best despite being extremely limited from a scoring standpoint. Others who had that status in their heyday include Dennis Rodman and Ben Wallace. The bottom line is, the Warriors have been one of the league’s best defensive teams since their dynasty began, and Green has undoubtedly been the heart and soul of their defensive excellence the entire time. &nbsp;

The Raptors have managed to skip some steps after winning the title in 2019. Some automatically figured they were going to be forced to rebuild after Kawhi Leonard signed with the Clippers. The development of Fred VanVleet and the impact Scottie Barnes made as a rookie were big factors in their success last season. Also key was Siakam’s play. The 6-foot-8, 230-pounder scored 30-plus points 14 times, including on March 28 when he erupted for 40 points against the Celtics. Has he already hit his ceiling, or does the 28-year-old have another floor he can climb to?&nbsp;

What we learned at summer league about Banchero, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, is that he’s extremely versatile. The way he moves, and the feel for the game that he has at 6-foot-10, 255 pounds is quite unusual – in a good way of course. How Orlando utilizes him in year one will be a great storyline to pay attention to. He has all the physical tools to make a huge impact on both ends of the floor, and his high basketball IQ will make the game easier for his Magic teammates. Arguably his best skill is his passing, which isn’t typically the case for guys at this position.&nbsp;

Nobody is debating Davis’ talent. Many, in fact, believe he’s a top 10 player in the league. But the fact of the matter is, the way the last two seasons have gone for him, it’s unclear whether he will be able to showcase his talent. He missed half of L.A.’s games in 2020-21 and another 42 games in 2021-22. Even when he played, he just didn’t look right – probably because his conditioning wasn’t where it needs to be. Just a hunch, but expect to see a more motivated Davis this season, especially with LeBron James on the cusp of turning 38. Time will soon run out for this pairing to win a second title together if Davis isn’t the player we all know he’s capable of being.&nbsp;

Every NBA fan knows at this point that Mobley is an elite defender. Expect to hear his name in the DPOY talk this season and beyond. The question, however, is whether his offense can catch up to his defense, which if it does, watch out! That’s not to say he isn’t already a solid offensive player. He scored in double figures in 57 of the 69 games he appeared in during his rookie campaign and had a 30-point performance on March 14 against the Clippers. But it was clear that he’s still very raw and unpolished on that end. Certainly, with the talent Cleveland has, particularly after acquiring Donovan Mitchell, he doesn’t need to be a prolific scorer for the Cavs to climb the ladder. But if he becomes a legit scoring threat, that raises the bar quite a bit.&nbsp;&nbsp;

If you thought the days of pairing two elite big men together were over, well, think again – at least according to the Timberwolves, who went out and got Rudy Gobert to team with Towns. Tactically speaking, it’s not that crazy. Towns is best known for his outside shooting at his size, while Gobert is one of the game’s all-time best rim protectors. They are very different, so just because they are both 7-footers (Towns is listed at 6’11, Gobert 7’1, just FYI) doesn’t mean they can’t coexist. Whether or not this core of Towns, Gobert, Anthony Edwards, and D’Angelo Russell is better than the one Minnesota had in 2004 (Kevin Garnett, Latrell Sprewell, and Sam Cassell) remains to be seen, but there’s no doubt that the Wolves have a team that could make some serious noise come playoff time.&nbsp;

It all hinges on his health and conditioning. If he’s in shape and free of pain, Williamson is probably right now a top 10 player in the league, and that’s with just 85 games under his belt. The season he put together in 2020-21 made it clear that he can have a Shaq-like effect on the league with his combination of skills, size, and athleticism. The pieces are in place in New Orleans, if they are at full strength, to skyrocket up the Western Conference standings this season.&nbsp;

This is the fourth or fifth straight year in which Antetokounmpo tops the power forward list, and there’s no reason to believe that’s going to change anytime soon. The third-place finisher in the MVP race last year after already capturing that award twice before, the 27-year-old recorded 10 40-plus point performances in 2021-22, including on Feb. 10 when he exploded for 50, two shy of his career high, against the Pacers. He also had four triple-doubles, including on New Year’s Day against the Pelicans with 35 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists.

Tied #10 DeMar DeRozan/Scottie Barnes/Franz Wagner

All three deserve to be on this list, which explains the tie. DeRozan had a marvelous first year in Chicago, exploding for 40-plus points five times, including racking up 50 against the Clippers on March 31. Barnes earned Rookie of the Year honors for his all-around excellence. He’s a dynamic two-way player with a unique set of skills at 6-foot-9. Also quite unique is Wagner, who possesses some of the best footwork on drives ever seen in a 6-foot-10 guy. He had a 38-point performance against the then defending-champion Bucks on Dec. 28.  

Honorable Mentions for this list include Jerami Grant, Michael Porter Jr., Saddiq Bey, De’Andre Hunter, Gordon Hayward, Bojan Bogdanovic, Harrison Barnes, Mikal Bridges, and Dillon Brooks.&nbsp;

Many believe the Bucks would have won their second straight title last season if Middleton didn’t get hurt early in the postseason. While there’s no way to know for certain either way, what’s more apparent than ever is that Milwaukee needs Middleton, one of the craftier scorers in the league, to truly be in the championship mix. A three-time NBA All-Star, the 31-year-old scored 30-plus points four times last season, including against the Suns on March 6 when he amassed 44 points.&nbsp;

There’s something brewing in New Orleans. Obviously, the only way they can seriously compete for a title is if Zion Williamson is playing and fully healthy. But the way they finished last season, particularly after acquiring CJ McCollum, gives them hope that with a healthy core they can climb up the standings rapidly. Ingram, an All-Star a few seasons ago, is without doubt a big part of what they do, particularly on the offensive end where he is one of the premier isolation scorers of this era.&nbsp;

It was surprising, even before what he showed during the postseason, that Wiggins did not make an NBA All-Defensive Team. Just based on key defensive data, there’s an argument to be made that he should have been in the Defensive Player of the Year conversation. He locked up so many of the game’s best, and it wasn’t until the playoffs when observers truly started noticing how amazing of an on-ball defender he has become. Obviously, he’s found the right situation for himself in San Francisco, where he's a defensive stopper first and a tertiary scoring option second.&nbsp;

There’s regular season Jimmy, and then there’s playoff Jimmy. The regular season version is probably somewhere between 15th&nbsp;and 20th&nbsp;best in the league. His postseason form, on the other hand, might very well be top five. When the lights get brighter, as we’ve seen in two of the last three seasons, Butler is on another planet. As he was in the Disney bubble in 2020 when the Heat reached the NBA Finals, the six-time NBA All-Star was arguably the best all-around player on the court in all three of Miami’s playoff series in 2022. He scored 40-plus points in four of those 17 playoff games, including that unforgettable 47-point effort in Boston in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals.&nbsp;&nbsp;

A case could have been made after the first month of last season that George was the best small forward in the league. He scored 30-plus points in six of his first 20 games, including twice exploding for over 40. With Kawhi Leonard coming back, Clippers coach Tyronn Lue will need to figure out the best role for George, who’s had his ups and downs since getting traded to Los Angeles in 2019.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Tatum had a disappointing NBA Finals. That was a highly discussed storyline this past June. But, as we’ve seen throughout NBA history with budding superstars, sometimes it takes a substandard series performance to fuel them for future gains. Tatum, still just 24 years old, made significant progress last year as a playmaker and defender. We know how electric of a scorer he is, but now it’s about consistency from him. After his great performances, some might say he's the best player in the world. Then, after an off-night, some question whether he's in the top 10.

Way too many seem to be sleeping on Leonard’s return, and what that means for the landscape of the Western Conference. It wasn’t long ago when many felt that Leonard – not LeBron, KD, Jokic, Embiid, Doncic or Tatum – was the best player in the world. Obviously, it’s been a while since he suited up, but if he is completely healthy, watch out for the Clippers, who also signed John Wall this summer.&nbsp;

The top storyline this offseason was Durant’s reported trade requested, which eventually he pulled back on (for now). The question now is how mentally committed is he to the Nets, and if it’s not near 100 percent, could that at all affect his play? Regardless, though, KD is the game’s best pure scorer right now, and there’s no reason to believe, assuming he’s healthy, that he won’t rank near the top in scoring once again this season. In 55 games last year, he scored 30-plus points 25 times, including on April 2 at Atlanta where he had a double-nickel.&nbsp;

Expect James to be more motivated than ever. He’ll be 38 in December, and the window of opportunity to win another championship will inevitably be closing soon, if it hasn’t closed already. With that said, he certainly didn’t look like the average 37-year-old last season despite the Lakers’ struggles, scoring 30-plus points 34 times, including twice erupting for 50-plus. The 56 points he scored on March 5 against the Warriors was the second-most for a player aged 37 or older. Kobe Bryant scored 60 at age 37 in his last game of his NBA career.

Maxey took a huge jump last season, raising his scoring average by over nine points while shooting 11-plus percent better from 3-point range than his rookie campaign. He scored 30-plus points five times, including on March 4 against Cleveland when he erupted for 33 points and made five 3-pointers. The question now, on a very generic level, is whether he is a budding superstar, a star, or a high-end role player.&nbsp;

Honorable mentions for this list include Tyler Herro, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Dejounte Murray, Desmond Bane, Anfernee Simons, Gary Trent Jr., Jordan Poole, Terry Rozier, Cole Anthony, and Buddy Hield.&nbsp;

Was not getting Donovan Mitchell a blessing in disguise perhaps for the Knicks? Maybe, it paves the way for Barrett, who finished last season exceptionally well, to take his game to new heights. He had 11 30-plus-point performances last year, including against the Heat on Feb. 25 when he exploded for 46 points. How well he and Jalen Brunson, signed by New York in the offseason, mesh in the backcourt will likely determine where the Knicks finish in the standings.&nbsp;

Not many players around the league down the stretch of last season were more potent offensively than Green, who erupted for 30-plus points in six of Houston’s last seven games. His season and career best scoring output came in the finale against Atlanta when he exploded for 41 points. Part of an incredibly strong 2021 draft class, what does the 6-foot-4, nearly 180-pounder have in store for his sophomore campaign? For the Rockets to make strides, he’s going to have to not only score a lot, but be efficient as well.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Some might suggest that Thompson exceeded expectations following his return considering he was out of action for 2 ½ seasons. He scored 30-plus points six times, including in the regular season finale against the Pelicans on April 10 when he racked up 41 points. He had a few excellent playoff performances, too, such as in the Western Conference Finals series finale against the Mavs when he tallied 32 points. Now with an entire offseason of more standard training, perhaps we will see those kinds of games more consistently from the five-time NBA All-Star.&nbsp;

Are the Wizards being slept on? We know how good Beal is, although some are questioning whether it was the right move for Washington to give him the five-year, $251 million max contract. But what did go a bit under the radar down the stretch of last season was Kristaps Porzingis’ productivity after the Wizards got him from the Mavs in a mid-season trade. Also, a sneaky good move in the offseason for the Wizards was landing Monte Morris and Will Barton from the Nuggets – two proven role players with plenty of postseason experience.&nbsp;

Somewhat surprisingly, LaVine and DeMar DeRozan meshed well together last year despite both being premier isolation scorers. It’s not uncommon for a pair of prolific scorers to get in each other’s way. For the Bulls to gain ground on any of the other elite Eastern Conference teams, they will not only need LaVine and DeRozan to both light it up offensively, but they will need to become a far better defensive team. They ranked 23rd&nbsp;in defensive rating last season.&nbsp;

Edwards, just 21 years old, is a bucket. It wouldn’t be a surprise at all if he led the league in scoring this season, or any season in the next few years. He scored 40-plus-points three times last season, including racking up 49 against the Spurs on April 7. Maybe it’s not that critical, especially now that they have three-time DPOY Rudy Gobert manning the paint, but it remains to be seen if Edwards’ defense, along with his playmaking, will be good enough to truly turn him into an all-time great.&nbsp;

The Cavs gave up a lot to get Mitchell, a three-time NBA All-Star with the Jazz. But, without question, acquiring him expedites Cleveland’s mission to get back into championship contention. A core four of he, Darius Garland, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen have a chance to be special, but it’s still up in the air whether any of them are in that A+ category. With the exception of the 2004 Pistons, every other championship team in league history had an A+ caliber player on their roster.

Does Brown get the credit he deserves? Many have Jayson Tatum as a top five player in the league right now, while very few seem to put Brown in the top 10. One could argue, from start to finish, that Brown was Boston’s better player in the postseason last year. In fact, if the Celtics had beaten the Warriors, there’s no question that he would have been named Finals MVP. He scored 20-plus points in four of the six games, including erupting for 34 in the series finale.&nbsp;

Was losing to Dallas in the Western Conference Semifinals a wakeup call for the Suns, or was that the beginning of a decline? NBA history has shown us that major playoff upsets can either motivate a player and/or team to rise to another level or cause a player and/or team to fade far quicker than anyone anticipated. Just based on how competitive he seems to be, don’t be surprised if Booker is in the MVP mix all year long.

Many have already written Harden off, at least as far as getting back to being the MVP-level player he was with Houston. But there has been chatter that he’s put in the work this summer to prove the naysayers wrong. The Sixers have a better all-around roster now around he and Joel Embiid, but do they have enough depth to surpass any of the other elite Eastern Conference teams?&nbsp;

Honorable mentions for this list include CJ McCollum, Jalen Brunson, Markelle Fultz, Cade Cunningham, De’Aaron Fox, Tyrese Haliburton, Jrue Holiday, Fred VanVleet, Jamal Murray, Josh Giddey, Marcus Smart, and D’Angelo Russell.&nbsp;

Now 37 years old, will we see any drop-off this season, or will he continue to age like fine wine? The last two seasons, he’s been in the MVP conversation, although he did struggle a bit late in Phoenix’s playoff runs. Last year, he led the league in assists per game for the fifth time in his NBA career.

It’s often a player’s third season when we find out what they are truly made of. Ball had a terrific second year, scoring 20-plus points 39 times and recording five triple-doubles. Steve Clifford, back in Charlotte as the Hornets’ head coach, usually gets his point guards to play disciplined and methodical. That seems opposite of how Ball likes to play, but, as we saw with Kemba Walker during his first stint in Charlotte, Clifford has done a good job in his career getting the most out of his best players.

How refreshed will Lillard be after missing Portland’s last 47 games a season ago? He’s said to be completely healthy, but will that translate into a more energized version of the future Hall of Famer or will rust come along with being absent for so long? Also, have the Blazers added enough around him to return to the playoffs?&nbsp;

Although he only played in 29 regular season games last season, Irving still very much looked like he’s in the prime of his career. He scored over 20 points in 22 of those games, including erupting for 50 points against the Hornets on March 8 and a career-best 60 on March 15 against the Magic. Still, will all the offseason chatter about trade possibilities be a distraction or a motivation?&nbsp;

Will Cleveland have the league’s best backcourt this season with Garland and Donovan Mitchell? One of last year’s most improved players, Garland recorded seven 30-plus-point scoring performances in 2021-22, including on March 8 when he poured in a career-best 41 points against the Pacers. There’s some lofty expectations in Cleveland. Are the Cavs still too young, though, to reach them?

Not many players finished last year’s regular season stronger than Young, who scored 40-plus points seven times over the last three months. But his best individual performance came a bit earlier when he exploded for a career-best 56 points to go along with dishing out 14 assists against the Blazers on Jan. 3. How well he and Dejounte Murray mesh together will likely determine how far Atlanta goes this season and beyond.&nbsp;

Morant, one of the league’s most electric players, took his game to another level last season, scoring 30 points or more 24 times, including on Feb. 28 against the Spurs when he exploded for a career-high 52 points. No longer a surprise team, do the Grizzlies have another gear in them, or are they still a player or two away from being legitimate title contenders?&nbsp;

Now a four-time NBA champion after leading the Warriors to the title last season, Curry scored 30-plus points 21 times during the 2021-22 regular season, including dropping in 50 points to go along with seven rebounds and 10 assists on Nov. 8 against the Hawks. The conversation now is whether it’s he or Magic Johnson as the greatest point guard in NBA history. Another stellar season could solidify him as the best to ever play the position, although he and Magic are stylistically completely different, making it hard to determine who ranks above the other.&nbsp;

Most seem to agree that Doncic, still just 23 years old, is already a top five player in the league. The question now is whether, even without a superstar sidekick, he can lead the Mavs to a championship. He took a major step forward in trying to accomplish that last season by getting Dallas to the Western Conference Finals.
