Assessing Magic Training Camp Players Competing for Roster Spot
1 / 6OrlandoMagic.com's Josh Cohen evaluates the five players who are hoping to earn a spot on the team. Keith Appling While he’s not the most explosive, Appling is extremely crafty and unpredictable. He eludes defenders well and runs the pick-and-roll at a high level. Appling is extremely feisty and pesky on defense (averaged over a steal per game for Erie last season). He protects the ball and limits turnovers (averaged 2.1 TO’s in four seasons at Michigan State). He also is very effective at initiating contact and getting to the free throw line (attempted 6.7 FT’s per game in Erie). Appling’s main weakness is his perimeter shooting. He attempted only two 3-pointers in his 10 games with the BayHawks last season. He also prefers to slash to the basket and finish as opposed to dish off to teammates (only averaged 3.3 assists in college).
