ORLANDO -- With two-time NBA champion head coach Erik Spoelstra and his coaching staff shouting instructions from courtside seats, the Miami Heat shared the ball well and disrupted the Orlando Magic’s offense in a 94-80 victory.
Miami (2-1) forced Orlando (1-2) into 21 turnovers and frustrated rookie point guard Victor Oladipo in third-day action of the Southwest Airlines Orlando Pro Summer League.
James Ennis scored 17 of his 19 points in the first half and center Jarvis Varnado added 16 points for the Heat.
Oladipo, the No. 2 overall pick in the NBA Draft, once again played predominantly at point guard and struggled with five turnovers. After spending three seasons at Indiana University as a shooting guard, Oladipo is trying to make the transition to point guard at the NBA level.
Oladipo did score 22 points in 26 minutes for the Magic. He made four of seven shots, hit both of his 3-point tries and made 12 of 14 free throws.
Down double digits much of the game, Orlando got within 56-49 late in the third period on a Kyle O’Quinn hook shot. But the Heat closed the period with another burst to put Orlando in a 69-56 hole.
Miami led 42-30 at the half in large part because of a trapping defense that totally discombobulated Orlando’s offense. The Magic turned the ball over 15 times in the first two quarters. As a result, they got up just 20 shots in the first half – 18 fewer than the hustling Heat.
Ennis torched the Magic for 17 points and two 3-pointers in the first half. He made four of his first seven shots and connected on seven free throws in the first half.
Oladipo struggled mightily with Miami’s trapping defense, turning the ball four times in the first two quarters. Nicholson, who made his NBA debut last season with Orlando, also turned the ball over four times in the first half when he repeatedly had the ball knocked out of his hands in the post.
