Picking up where he left off after Monday’s 18-point performance, Ben McLemore was on fire against Minnesota on Thursday inside Cox Pavilion.

Sacramento’s second-year guard scored a team-high 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field, tallied six boards and dished four assists as the Kings defeated the Timberwolves, 100-86, to advance to the Summer League tournament’s quarterfinals.

“Overall, I just let the game come to me and I played my game,” said the Kansas product. “I went out there with confidence… and my team did a great job helping me with it. We came out together with that mindset – just play our game and play unselfish basketball.”

Chicago and Philadelphia are set to tip-off Thursday at 7 p.m., to determine whom Sacramento will face in its next contest, Saturday at 5 p.m.

“To get 100 points in a Summer League game [in] 40 minutes is great,” said Kings Head Coach Michael Malone. “It’s the kind of pace we like to play with, but it’s all predicated on our defense.”

Sacramento’s offense thrived off crisp passing. Both Nik Stauskas and Ray McCallum finished with five assists, while the team tallied 18.

“One thing we were trying to stress a lot was that when we do get stops and we do rebound we want that ball to move up the floor with the advance pass,” said the Kings leader. “Not dribbling up. The ball will move a lot quicker up the floor if you throw it ahead. We had a lot of those tonight.”

The team’s fast pace helped it climb to a seven-point lead after one period of play.

More impressively, Minnesota’s 7-foot-1 Kyrylo Fesenko – who posted back-to-back double-digit scoring outings coming into the game – was held without a basket in the first quarter.

Kings forward Quincy Acy helped set the tone defensively as he rejected Glenn Robinson III just three minutes into the game. The fourth-year pro says despite having a slender stature, he can use it to his advantage.

“You have to use your quickness,” said No. 5. “Those are some big [posts] out there – you can’t get in a wrestling match because you’re going to lose that every time.”

As a team, the Kings tallied five blocks and forced nine turnovers.

“I give Alex Oriakhi, Dwayne Jones, Sim [Bhullar], Quincy and all of our bigs credit,” stated Malone. “They met that challenge. [Minnesota was] able to hurt us a little on the offensive glass – especially Gorgui Dieng – but as the game went on, I thought we did a good job of limiting their effectiveness in the post.”

The Timberwolves pulled within two early in the second period, but Sacramento rallied with another offensive barrage from No. 16 and Co.

Jared Cunningham began an 11-5 run which pushed the Kings lead back to eight, 43-35. In all, the young point guard tallied seven points on 3-of-4 shooting in the second quarter.

MarShon Brooks was also active on the offensive end totaling eight points in the period on 3-of-4 shooting.

“Every time they made a run… we handled it,” said Malone. “We showed a little bit of resiliency, we didn’t get down on ourselves, [we] kept on playing and we were able to build a lead again.”

McLemore added five points to his total to give him a team-high 14 at halftime on 5-of-8 shooting. Afterwards, he said the game is starting to slow down for him.

“Coming into the league, everything is so fast,” admitted the St. Louis native. “Especially when you’re a rookie. [Now,] I’ve been able to slow things down to my own pace and control it… When I do, great things happen for me.”

The purple and black built a double-digit lead early in the second stanza, but the Timberwolves wouldn’t back down.

Minnesota finished the third quarter on an 8-2 run to pull within five, 74-69, but Sacramento withstood the charge.

McCallum and McLemore hit back-to-back shots before Brooks added two buckets of his own. In all, No. 0 finished second on the team with 19 points – 11 of which came in the final quarter.

“You can put MarShon Brooks in any gym in the world and he’ll score,” said the Kings second-year coach. “He’s a professional scorer – that’s what he does.”

Thanks to Brooks’ stellar offensive outing, Sacramento’s bench combined for 40 points on Friday. The Long Branch, N.J. native boosted his team to a 26-17 advantage in the final ten minutes, which ultimately sealed the victory.

En route to their first win of Summer League play, the Kings used a balanced offensive attack and swarming defense to stifle the Charlotte Hornets to earn a 72-65 victory.

Sacramento, which now stands 1-1 in Las Vegas, outscored Charlotte in three out of four quarters and held the Hornets to a 28.6-shooting clip from the floor.

Five players finished in double-figures, including RaShad James – who had a team-high 12 points – Ben McLemore (11), MarShon Brooks (11), Nik Stauskas (10) and Quincy Acy (10).

“[After] the disappointment from the second half of our last game and coming back tonight, we wanted to put a 40-minute game together,” stated Assistant Coach Tyrone Corbin. “[I was happy with] the way the (team) stayed together and understood how we had to finish quarters off.”

The Kings limited the Hornets to just nine points in the first quarter by holding Charlotte to just 16.7 percent from the floor as just two players in teal and purple connected on field goals.

“We were definitely excited [about that],” said McLemore, who helped the Kings to a 16-9 first quarter lead. “We were on a string together on the defensive end and we [were all] trying to help each other. If one person made a mistake, we [were there] to help.”

Sacramento’s Summer League invitee Sim Bhullar saw his first action Sunday during the opening period and tallied one block in three-and-a-half minutes.

Afterwards, Corbin heralded the 7-foot-5 center’s progression.

“It’s exciting,” stated the newest member of the Kings coaching staff. “He’s worked so hard to get himself in NBA shape and to get an opportunity to get on the floor. I thought he had good minutes – he blocked a shot in there and got his hands on the ball, so we’ll continue to work with him, but it’s always exciting to see a young guy get an opportunity and do well.”

Charlotte put up a fight in the second quarter, outscoring the Kings 20-16, but Sacramento was able to maintain a three-point lead at intermission, 32-29.

Stauskas led Sacramento’s balanced offensive attack in the first half with 7 points, while Acy and McLemore chipped in with 6 points apiece.

Midway through the third quarter, Charlotte tied the game at 39-all thanks to a three from P.J. Hairston.

After a solo McLemore free throw, the Hornets took their first lead, 42-40, after a Rion Brown triple.

The lead was short lived, however, as Brooks, James and Eric Moreland teamed up to score Sacramento’s next 8 points and reclaim the lead, one the black-and-purple would not relinquish.

“Our bench came [up big] tonight,” stated McLemore. “MarShon came off the bench lighting it up and played well, and RaShad came off the bench too. We needed it to help us… get the momentum and take the win.”

Brooks, who scored eight second-half points, pointed to improved ball movement and precise passing as keys to the win.

“In the third quarter, everybody loosened up and we started sharing the ball,” said No. 0. “I think in the first half… we had two assists – we can’t win like that, no matter who we’re playing. We have a [very] talented team, but at the same time, we have to drive and make the right play and make some passes.”

Taking his advice to heart, Brooks used a fast-break opportunity to loft a perfect pass to James, who laid the ball off the glass for an easy score near the end of the third quarter.

“The game’s a lot easier when the ball’s moving from side-to-side and you can just attack guys on the closeout,” admitted the Providence alum. “I think it’s what we did in the second half, I think it’s why we won the game.”

The Kings scored 22 points in the final period with 10 coming from James.

No. 20 scored all 12 of his points in the second stanza, including back-to-back threes with less than six minutes to play which all but sealed Sacramento’s victory.

The Kings close out Summer League pool play Monday against the NBA D-League Select team at 1:30 p.m. at Thomas & Mack Center.

Kings Summer League invitee MarShon Brooks has a clear outlook as he sets his sights on Week 2 with the squad.

“I know exactly what’s expected of me – I know my strengths, I know my weaknesses, I know what [the coaches] want to see – so I just have to execute,” stated the 6-foot-5 shooting guard, who’s played for four organizations over his NBA career.

Saturday in Las Vegas, No. 0 was all over the court as he aimed to make a difference throughout Sacramento’s morning session.

During the box-out defensive drills, Brooks sprinted sideline to sideline before aggressively boxing out his opponent. Then, during the full-court 4-on-3 situational drills, he jumped in passing lanes, pushed the ball ahead on the fast break and dove into chairs on the sideline to save possession.

All of it, he says, is just another day on-court.

“I am trying to make a team, so I just have to play hard,” he stated. “[The Kings] have two young shooting guards, so I just have to try to teach them everything I know that I picked up over the last three years and throughout the League… [I’m here to] just compete and give them everything I have to offer.”

With three years of experience, Brooks knows a Summer League opportunity with the black-and-purple isn’t just a chance to make Sacramento’s roster, but an opening to impress the entire League.

After being selected with the 25th pick in the 2011 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics, the Long Branch, N.J. native was immediately traded to his hometown team. With the New Jersey Nets, he went on to start 47 games and average 12.6 points per contest before earning NBA All-Rookie Second-Team honors.

Brooks remained close to home for one more season – as the Nets moved to Brooklyn – before rejoining the Celtics. His time in Boston was again short lived, as he was traded to Golden State and later to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he finished the 2013-14 campaign.

Despite his travels, one constant has remained – something that stood out to Coach Malone.

“He’s a professional scorer,” said the Kings leader. “I mean the guy can score the basketball. He has an NBA skill and it’s to put the ball in the hole, and he’s shown it in a very short NBA career [so far].”

The Providence alum brings a scoring punch to a young, dynamic backcourt.

“Our first priority is Ben [McLemore], Nik [Stauskas] and Ray [McCallum], so MarShon has to fit in when he can,” admitted Malone. “But when he’s in the game, we need him to be aggressive within the offense.”

Friday night against San Antonio, Brooks finished with five points off the bench, including two of which came on a two-handed slam in the second quarter as he weaved through three defenders and drove the ball home.

“Nik made the play for me,” said the veteran guard. “He drew some attention from me with the pump-fake, then he swung it. The hole just opened up.”

With Charlotte on the horizon for the Kings Summer League team, Brooks won’t have to wait long for his next opportunity to get the crowd buzzing. Tip-off for Sunday's game against the Hornets is slated for 3 p.m.
