Sacramento, Calif. – The Sacramento Kings and California Family Fitness today announced the activation of a first-of-its-kind initiative that will put the power of the new downtown arena’s 4K ultra HD center-hung video board in the power of the fans, literally.

As part of the newly announced Xcelerater-Bike program, a group of Sacramento faithful will be put in the saddle and charged with energizing the game’s largest and highest-resolution screens in the NBA.

“Thanks to the unmatched sophistication of Golden 1 Center, our video board will be powered wirelessly by the energy organically produced by team-supporting bikers,” said Kings President Chris Granger. “What better way to continue to bolster the fan experience than to combine basketball and technology as a vessel to advance health and sustainability?”

Fitted with customized, biodegradable performance clothing made from local compost and world-class cycling monitors that track heart rate, VO2 max and human-generated power, bikers will be the ambassadors of a new line of recyclable Kings gear and provide the metrics for the ultimate gaming experience – as users of the new Sacramento Kings App will be able to vote on and measure the energy output of their favorite racers, while an in-arena leader board will track individual biker performance throughout the game.

The activation boasts industry-pioneering ergonomic 3D-printed spin cycles made of salvaged materials from Sacramento region schools, and each biker will be outfitted with bespoke VR goggles that will provide 20 unique courtside vantages to live game action to ensure each biker has not only an unprecedented 5-hour workout but a premium seat to watch their favorite team.

Long regarded as an untapped and oft-wasted resource, sweat from each of the bikers in the class will be absorbed by in floor sensors and then naturally filtered and disseminated to hydrate greenery in the surrounding Downtown Commons (DOCO) development.

“As California’s premier family fitness center, we’re ecstatic to continue our innovative partnership with the Kings as they prepare to open their new downtown venue,” said California Family Fitness President Randy Karr. “I can’t wait to see new and existing CalFit members on game nights for Xcelerater-Bike.”

Participation in the new program is expected to draw interest from cyclists around the world, but applicants will be determined via crowdsourcing after a 16-week training camp that gets pedaling this summer.
