Memphis Grizzlies

The Memphis Grizzlies surrendered a 15-point lead in the fourth quarter as they fell to the Detroit Pistons, 100-93, on Tuesday night in Little Caesers Arena. The Grizzlies dropped to 32-49 on the season and 12-29 on the road. The Pistons improved to 40-41 on the year and are now 26-15 at home. Detroit swept the season series 2-0, marking their first sweep against Memphis since the 2007-08 season.

The Grizzlies committed 22 turnovers in the game, the second-highest amount of turnovers in a game this season, while the Pistons turned it over nine times. Detroit used that +13 margin to outscore Memphis 21-7 off of the giveaways. The Pistons also finished with a 13-4 advantage in steals.

Detroit found their shooting touch in the fourth quarter, connecting on 12-of-20 (5-10 3P) shots, while the Grizzlies got cold, shooting 5-for-19 (1-11 3P). An Andre Drummond putback as part of a 10-0 quarter-opening run trimmed the Grizzlies lead to single-digits at 79-71. Former Grizzlies player Ish Smith would make back-to-back threes to give the Pistons the lead at 85-83 with 6:43 remaining, their first lead since scoring the opening bucket of the game. With Memphis trailing 93-89 with 1:05 left in the game, Tyler Dorsey earned a trip to the line, missing the first but making the second. After a Grizzlies timeout, Bruno Caboclo swished a three to narrow the Detroit lead to 95-93 with 50 seconds left, but Smith made a layup on the other end with 28 seconds to go, making it a two-possession game and putting the game out of reach.

Delon Wright nearly finished with a double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Wright is averaging 18.4 points and 8.8 rebounds in his last five games. Caboclo also had 15 points and blocked two shots. Caboclo has scored in double figures in six of his last eight games. Tyler Zeller finished with 13 points, six rebounds and three assists. Zeller has reached double-digits in all three of his games with Memphis. Dorsey chipped in with 12 points and four boards. Dorsey is averaging 14.3 points over his last 10 games.

Memphis outshot Detroit overall, going 33-for-69 (10-24 3P) while the Pistons were 35-for-88 (10-34 3P). The Pistons doubled up the Grizzlies 14-7 on the offensive glass, but both teams finished with 15 second chance points. Memphis made an efficient 17-of-21 (.810) free throws throughout the game, while Detroit went 20-for-28 (.714) at the line.

Drummond earned his league-leading 68th double-double, finishing with 20 points and 17 rebounds, five steals and three blocks. Smith tied his season-high with 22 points off the bench, scoring 13 of them in the fourth quarter. Luke Kennard added 15 points, making 5-of-9 (.556) three-pointers. Reggie Jackson chipped in with 12 points and five assists.

The Grizzlies’ issues with ball security resumed after halftime, committing seven turnovers in the third quarter, which led to 10 Pistons points. The Pistons used a 14-4 run midway through the quarter to cut the Grizzlies’ lead to 67-56, but the Grizzlies made 9-of-13 (.692) three-pointers in the quarter to carry a 79-64 lead going into the fourth.

Memphis made most of their shots in the first half by going 21-for-37 (.568), which includes 8-for-11 (.727) from three, marking the best three-point percentage in any half this season. The Grizzlies’ defense limited the Pistons to just 15-of-47 (.319) shooting, including 4-for-19 (.211) from long range. Memphis – who entered tonight averaging 13.9 turnovers per game – already had 11 giveaways in the first half while Detroit committed four, but the Pistons only held a 6-4 edge in points off turnovers. No Grizzlies player had reached double figures in the half, but all nine that saw the floor scored at least four points.

After starting the game 1-for-5 from the floor, Memphis finished 14-for-19 (.737) in the first quarter, setting a season-high for first-quarter field goal percentage and helping them jump out to a 32-20 lead. In the second quarter, the Grizzlies made 6-of-7 (.857) three-pointers, each one coming from a different Grizzlies player, to boost their lead to 57-38 at halftime.

Postgame Report: Memphis Fades in the Fourth Quarter, Drops Game to Detroit 100-93

Despite setting a franchise record for three-pointers made, the Memphis Grizzlies fell to the Dallas Mavericks, 129-127, in overtime on Sunday evening in FedExForum. The Grizzlies dropped to 32-48 on the season and 20-20 at home. The Mavericks improved to 32-48 on the year and are now 9-31 on the road. Memphis takes the season series 3-1, marking the first time they’ve won a regular-season series against Dallas since 2014-15 (also 3-1).

Memphis made a franchise-record 19-of-44 (.432) three-pointers in the game, surpassing the previous high of 17 three-pointers (Dec. 31, 2016 at Sacramento). Dallas meanwhile made 12-of-41 (.293) triples in the game.

In overtime, Dallas kicked off the period with a 7-0 run to go up 119-112. Memphis countered with a 7-0 run of their own from 2:36 to 1:26 (:50 span) to knot things back up at 121 apiece. Things looked bleak for the Grizzlies after missing threes on back-to-back possessions, but Justin Holiday canned a triple with 20 seconds left that trimmed the Mavericks’ lead to 126-124 to keep the game alive. With the shot clock off, Memphis had to foul Trey Burke, who made both free throws to make it a two-possession game with 15 seconds remaining. Holiday proceeded to nail an off-balance three with 13 seconds left, bringing the Grizzlies within one at 128-127. Burke went to the line again, making the first but missing the second, giving the Grizzlies a chance to win or tie. With a foul to give, Dallas used it as a makeshift timeout with 4.5 seconds left. Delon Wright got the ball on the inbound set and used a stepback to get off a clean 26-foot shot at the buzzer, but it fell short, ending the game.

Fresh off his first career triple-double, Wright followed up with another triple-double by finishing with 20 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists. Wright becomes the first Grizzlies player ever to record back-to-back triple-doubles, and joins Marc and Pau Gasol as the only players to have multiple triple-doubles in a Memphis uniform.

Holiday led all scorers with a career-high 30 points (6-11 3P) and grabbed five boards. Holiday led the Grizzlies in scoring for the first time this season, which makes him the 19th different Memphis player to lead the team and expands the NBA record. Prior to this season, the New York Knicks had 16 different players lead them in scoring during the 2014-15 season. Bruno Caboclo recorded his third double-double of the year, finishing with 13 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. All three of Caboclo’s double-doubles have occurred within the last two weeks. Tyler Dorsey added 15 points (5-11 3P). Dorsey is averaging 14.5 points over his last nine games. Tyler Zeller also scored 15 points and grabbed five boards. Zeller’s 15 points was the most since April 1, 2018 (at Denver), and he has now scored in double figures in both of his games with Memphis since signing back on April 5. Ivan Rabb chipped in with 14 points. Rabb has reached double-digits in three-straight games, matching a season-high streak. The Grizzlies had eight players score in double figures, marking the most Grizzlies to score at least 10 points in a game this season and tying a single-game franchise record.

While the Grizzlies were better from beyond the arc, the Mavericks outshot them overall by going 45-for-98 (.459) from the floor compared to Memphis making 42-of-98 (.429). With their 19 three-pointers in the game, the Grizzlies set a new franchise single-season record for threes made in a season, surpassing the previous record of 767 (set in 2016-17). Memphis has now made a total of 780 threes with two games left in the season.

Burke led Dallas with 24 points off the bench while passing out five assists. Fellow reserve Salah Mejri scored a career-high 19 points and grabbed nine boards. Dorian Finney-Smith notched his second double-double of the season, finishing with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Rookie Jalen Brunson recorded the second double-double of his career, finishing with 12 points and a career-best 10 assists. Justin Jackson also scored 16 points (6-9 FG). Dwight Powell added 15 points. while Daryl Macon had 12 points and seven boards.

Memphis led for the entire third quarter, but the fourth was a different story. A Mejri three-pointer with 7:19 left in the game put the Mavericks up 95-94, giving them their first lead of the second half. Trailing 101-97 with 4:15 remaining, Caboclo hit a three from the wing – his third of the day – to bring Memphis within one. Soon after, Holiday hit a three of his own at the 2:50 mark to put Memphis back on top 105-103. With the Grizzlies up 112-110 and 12 seconds remaining in regulation, the Mavericks missed four shots and corralled them all, with Mejri finally tipping in a putback with just 1.5 ticks left to tie the game and force overtime.

Both teams made exactly 19 field goals in the first half, including the Grizzlies going 8-for-19 (.421) from three-point range while the Mavericks were 4-for-17 (.235) from deep. Memphis crashed the boards well in the first half, outrebounding Dallas 27-19 (+8) and outgained them 7-0 in second chance points. Wright rolled in a Euro step layup with 0.9 seconds left to put Memphis up 56-52 at halftime.

The Memphis Grizzlies set a season-high in fastbreak points as they defeated the Dallas Mavericks, 122-112, on Friday night in American Airlines Arena. Memphis improved to 32-47 on the season and are now 3-0 in the season series. Dallas fell to 31-48 on the year and are now 23-17 at home.

The Grizzlies outscored the Mavericks 33-5 in fastbreak situations throughout the game, with 26 of the points coming in the first half. Memphis’ franchise record for fastbreak points is 39, which has happened twice (most recently vs. LAL on Jan. 1, 2007).

Delon Wright had the best game of his career, setting career-highs with 26 points, 14 assists and 10 rebounds to give him his first career triple-double. Wright had already set career-highs in scoring and assists with the Grizzlies earlier this season, and his triple-double is the third of the season by a Memphis player.

Justin Holiday finished with 20 points (8-13 FG) and a pair of steals. Holiday now has five 20-point performances this season. Tyler Dorsey added 17 points and a career-high nine rebounds. Dorsey scored 13 of his points in the second half. Ivan Rabb also approached a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing eight boards. Chandler Parsons chipped in with 11 points (3-4 3P) off the bench, and has now scored in double figures eight times this season. In his Grizzlies debut, Tyler Zeller had 10 points and three rebounds in almost 18 minutes of action. Zeller became the 28th different player to take the floor this season for the Grizzlies, tying the 2015-16 team for the NBA record for number of different players in a season. Rookie Jevon Carter also scored 10 points off the bench, marking the third time he’s reached double-digits. Memphis had seven players score in double figures for the first time since Nov. 27, 2018 vs. Toronto, but none of the players in that game (Kyle Anderson, Omri Casspi, Mike Conley, Marc Gasol, JaMychal Green, Shelvin Mack and Garrett Temple) were in action tonight.

The Grizzlies outshot the Mavericks in the game, going 45-for-96 (.479) while Dallas was 41-for-96 (.427) from the floor. Memphis tied a season-high for three-pointers made, making 16-of-41 (.390) triples compared to Dallas’ 17-of-47 (.362) three-point shooting. The Grizzlies drove into the lane successfully, outscoring the Mavericks 58-32 in the paint. Memphis only outgained Dallas by one offensive rebound (14-13), but outscored them 20-12 on second chances.

Courtney Lee led the Mavericks with a season-high 21 points to go with seven assists. Justin Jackson added 19 points and six boards. Dirk Nowitzki finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. Trey Burke scored 13 points while Salah Mejri had 12 points and five boards off the bench. Reserve Daryl Macon finished with 11 points, scoring all of them in the second half.

The Grizzlies led by double-digits during the entire second half. The Mavericks made 10 three-pointers during the half, but also took 30 tries to get there (.333 3P), while the Grizzlies were an efficient 8-for-17 (.471) from distance.

Memphis attacked the Dallas defense in the first half, outscoring the Dallas 36-14 in the paint, while also owning a 26-3 advantage in fastbreak scoring, already putting them one shy of the previous season high. Memphis shot 52 percent from the floor during the half, despite making only 8-of-24 (.333) threes. The Grizzlies owned an 11-1 advantage in second chance points, even though they only had a 7-4 edge on the offensive boards. Wright had put in a full game’s worth of work, logging 19 points, seven assists and five rebounds by halftime, and was responsible for 36 of the Grizzlies’ 65 first-half points.

Both teams came out shooting to start the game, with Memphis making 12-of-23 (4-10 3P) shots and Dallas going 12-for-25 (4-8 3P). Dallas scored six points off of four Memphis turnovers in the period, while allowing two points off of two giveaways. Trailing by nine with 3:00 left, the Grizzlies closed out the opening quarter with a 10-0 run to lead 31-30.

Dallas struggled to handle the ball in the second quarter, committing three turnovers within the first two minutes and five overall, which led to nine points for Memphis. The Grizzlies made 14-of-27 (.519) shots in the second while the Mavericks went 7-for-18 (.389). The Grizzlies pushed the ball off the Mavericks misses, scoring 16 fastbreak points while Dallas had none. Carter hit a corner three with 1.5 seconds left to push the Grizzlies’ lead to 65-53 at halftime.

The Grizzlies will seek to avenge the loss against/complete the series sweep when they take on the Mavericks again on Sunday, April 7 at 5:00 p.m. CT in FedExForum. It will also be Faith and Family Night, which will feature a postgame message from Sadie Robertson.
