SAN ANTONIO (Oct. 27, 2026) – The San Antonio Spurs today announced a new partnership with Red McCombs Automotive, the largest automotive group in San Antonio. The company was founded by Red McCombs, the San Antonio business leader and philanthropist who helped bring the Spurs to San Antonio as an ABA team, securing their future in the NBA. The partnership between these two local legacy brands is a symbol of their collective impact on the city and continues their more than 50-year history of investing in the San Antonio community.
Red McCombs Automotive is owned and operated by McCombs Enterprises. The McCombs family’s legacy with the San Antonio Spurs is rooted in a shared commitment to the team and the city it calls home. Most recently, the McCombs Foundation worked alongside the Spurs to unveil the Red McCombs Community Court at Hemisfair in 2025, which pays homage to the Spurs early seasons in downtown San Antonio in the former HemisFair Arena, while also looking ahead to the team’s future return to the downtown district. The McCombs family rejoined the Spurs investor group in 2023.
SUPPORT FOR SAN ANTONIO PARKS & COURTS
With this partnership, Red McCombs Automotive will become the presenting partner of Play SA, a million-dollar outdoor play space renovation program launched by the Spurs in 2020. Since its launch, Play SA has upgraded 21 play spaces across San Antonio, including parks, basketball courts, multipurpose courts and more. The project has inspired Play ATX, Play Paris and Play MX, continuing the mission to provide safe spaces for youth all across the globe. In collaboration with City of San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department and San Antonio Parks Foundation, Play SA represents the Spurs and Red McCombs Automotive’s shared belief in enhancing neighborhood parks and creating safe, accessible spaces for the San Antonio community.
THREES FOR CHARITY: HONORING SPURS ABA LEGACY
One of the most innovative changes resulting from the 1976 ABA/NBA merger was the NBA’s adoption of the ABA’s three-point shot. To honor the pivotal role that Red, the family patriarch, played in the Spurs ABA history, Red McCombs Automotive will launch a new “Threes for Charity” promotion. With each three-point shot made by Spurs players this regular season, Red McCombs Automotive will donate $30 to Spurs Give & the Dropping Dimes Foundation, an organization that supports former players of the ABA and their families who are experiencing financial or medical hardship. Red McCombs Automotive will present the Spurs Classic Night games on Dec. 3, Jan. 6, March 3, March 18 and March 25 and will work with the Spurs to continue honoring this year’s 50th anniversary of the ABA/NBA merger with additional activations throughout the season.
“In 1973, a local car dealer tried to put San Antonio on the map by bringing a professional basketball team to town,” said Joseph Shields, executive vice president of Red McCombs Automotive. “Fifty years and five championships later, the Spurs have done exactly that, and it is only fitting that his dealership group, Red McCombs Automotive, reconnect as a partner of our beloved hometown team.”
“Red McCombs Automotive and the Spurs share a deep history in San Antonio, and this partnership builds on that foundation in ways that will benefit our community,” said Frank Miceli, chief commercial officer for Spurs Sports & Entertainment. “Through Play SA, we’re working together to create safe, accessible spaces for young people across the city, while Threes for Charity allows us to honor the Spurs original ABA roots and support former players and their families. We’re proud to connect our shared history with the future of San Antonio.”
