Toronto (48-21) tips off a three-game road trip tonight against the Celtics (41-30) at TD Garden. Since losing in TO on March 18th, Boston has put together back-to-back victories over Philadelphia and Orlando. The Raptors will be trying to win five straight for the third time this season with a victory tonight.

Isaiah Thomas – After putting up 20 points, three rebounds and three assists when these two teams played last week, Thomas still remains the Celtics main threat opposing teams plan their defences around. The 27-year old has been red hot of late and is averaging 27 points over his last 10 contests. With starting forward Jae Crowder still nursing an ankle injury, expect Thomas to continue to carry the brunt of the load for Boston.

Terrence Ross&lt;/strong – The Raptors shooting guard has had some up-and-down games this season, but seems to always come alive when facing the Celtics. In three matchups vs. Boston, the 25-year old is averaging 15 points per game on 55% shooting. If Patrick Patterson is unable to go tonight, Ross should see the bulk of the touches for Toronto’s reserves.

Never has one of Dwane Casey’s favourite sayings rung truer.

With Toronto currently 1.5 games back of Cleveland for the top spot in the Eastern Conference, Casey is having to deal with various injuries plaguing his rotations.

Entering this season, free-agent DeMarre Carroll was brought on board with the mindset of him being able to guard the opposing team’s best players and therefore taking much of the burden off of All-Stars Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan.

Unfortunately Raptors fans have only seen glimpses of what Carroll can bring to the table with the 29-year old managing to play only 23 games in an injury-plagued first season in T.O.

Pile on Jonas Valanciunas’ long-term injury earlier in the campaign, yet the Raptors have still managed to play at a high level. Much of the credit should go to Casey and his staff for finding ways to continue to churn out victories in a competitive Eastern Conference.

Toronto is entering a tough stretch of games with Patrick Patterson, James Johnson and Valanciunas banged up, but fans should know by now that this group of players have learned to buy into a system in which everyone is ready to step up when their number is called.

Ahead of their roadtrip, some good news came from Casey’s mouth after yesterday’s practice. “We anticipate having all bodies on deck.”

Game Day: Raptors @ Celtics

The Raptors had back-to-back steals that ended in Kyle Lowry 3-pointers to extend their lead to 17 with 7:08 remaining. Lowry scored 15 of his 32 points in the fourth to lead Toronto to a 105-91 victory and move the team to 47-21 on the season.

Jonas Valanaciunas returned to the active list after missing the previous two games with a left hand contusion. Valanciunas did not enter the game on Friday, but was in uniform, and on the bench with his hand wrapped. Bismack Biyombo started in his place while Norman Powell again got the nod to start. James Johnson missed the game with plantar fasciitis.

Patrick Patterson left the game with 7:08 remaining in the fourth quarter and did not return. The team announced after the game that he had a sore left ankle and that x-rays were negative.

Toronto didn’t look like a team playing its fourth game in five nights when they opened the game shooting 54 percent. Luis Scola was on fire in the first quarter and outscored the Celtics 17-14 himself. Toronto made eight of 16 attempts from deep in the first half, and held a 55-41 lead at the break.

After the Celtics outscored Toronto 33-24 in the third quarter and trimmed the lead to five going into the fourth, Kyle Lowry got to work. The Raptors held Boston to just six points through the first 9:41 of the fourth quarter. Lowry scored 15 points in that span to help Toronto to a 19-point lead before checking out of the game. The Raptors shot 50 percent in the fourth while holding the Celtics to 37 percent shooting, and outscored Boston 26-17 in the final frame.

Kyle Lowry scored a game-high 32 points against the Celtics, showing no signs of fatigue after a big overtime performance in Indiana one day earlier. He played 37 minutes and made 9-of-14 field goals, shot 5-for-8 from the 3-point line, and connected on 9-of-14 free throws to go along with four rebounds, five assists, two steals and a blocked shot. Toronto was a +20 when he was on the floor.

Luis Scola helped the Raptors get off to a great start against Boston, scoring all 17 of his points in the first quarter. Scola outscored the Celtics in the quarter and helped Toronto build a 16-point lead after the opening 12 minutes. He shot 7-for-12 from the floor, 3-for-5 from beyond the arc and added three rebounds and a steal in 21 minutes of action.

Toronto (46-21) returns home for a Friday night clash with the Boston Celtics (39-29) on Sportsnet One. The Raptors are coming off a hard fought overtime victory last night against the Pacers in Indiana. Boston got St. Patrick's day off after they suffered their third-straight defeat, losing at home to OKC Wednesday night.

Isaiah Thomas – The heart and soul all year for this Celtics team has been Thomas. Since his trade from Phoenix, the University of Washington alum has been a revelation in Boston. Thomas’ production has not slowed down either. He's averaging 28 points, four assists and three rebounds in the month of March. Despite some recent struggles, the Celtics are firmly entrenched in the playoff picture thanks in large part to the play of their All-Star point guard.

DeMar DeRozan&lt;/strong – Speaking of All-Stars…Toronto’s shooting guard is putting up big numbers of his own this month. Averages of 30 points, five rebounds and three assists have helped the Raptors to a 7-2 record in March. DeRozan has had success in the two meetings with Boston this season (29p, 6a, 5r) and should see plenty of the ball with one of the Celtics best defenders, Jae Crowder, not expected to play due to injury.

For a long time there has been a disparity between the East and the West. The Western Conference consistently had 8-10 teams with winning records where there were multiple teams in the Eastern Conference Playoffs who had lost more games than they won.

So far this 2015-16 regular season there has been a shift in the balance of power with nine teams in the East currently at or above .500.
There also isn’t much separating the two conferences head-to-head with the season series sitting at 206-193 in favour of the West.

Getting results against teams from the West is always a positive however what’s most important is taking care of business versus opponents in your own conference.

After last night’s victory over the Pacers, Toronto sits at an impressive 31-11 against the East with four of those losses coming to one team (Chicago).

The Raptors currently sit in second place and only two games behind Cleveland for the #1 seed. They are also a franchise-best 25 games above .500 and en route to their first 50 win season.

While Dwane Casey and his staff maintain they are always striving to improve, this team has developed a reputation as not only one of the top teams in their conference, but the entire NBA.

Game Day: Raptors vs. Celtics

DeMar DeRozan drilled a jumper to put the Raptors up four with 46.9 seconds remaining. Boston would miss and turn the ball over on their next two possessions, and Kyle Lowry sealed it at the line by making two free throws with 14.8 seconds on the clock, giving Toronto the 115-109 victory. The win moves the Raptors to 27-15 on the season.

Toronto got off to a great start, shooting 65 percent in the first quarter, and leading by as many as 13 points. The defence disappeared in the second quarter, as the Celtics made 14-of-20 field goal attempts, including 5-of-7 three-point attempts to erase their deficit and take a six-point lead at the halftime break.

Led by DeMar DeRozan’s 18-point third quarter, and a 13-point effort from Jonas Valanciunas, the Raptors poured in 40 points in the third to take a six-point lead into the fourth quarter. Boston didn’t go away easily, tying the game at 105 with 3:20 remaining, but back-to-back threes from Kyle Lowry and Terrence Ross kept Toronto ahead.

Boston coming through Toronto meant that Amir Johnson, one of the most beloved Raptors players of all-time, made his return to the city that embraced him during his six years with the team. After receiving a warm reception during starting lineup announcements, the Air Canada Centre crowd gave a standing ovation to Johnson during a video tribute in a first quarter timeout.

DeMar DeRozan scored a game-high 34 points on 13-for-25 field goals. He added six assists, two rebounds and a steal in 38 minutes and he made eight of nine free throws. Most of DeRozan’s makes were heavily contested, but the Celtics, like the rest of his opponents of late, were unable to slow him down. DeRozan is averaging 22.8 points, 4.1 assists and 4.6 rebounds per game.

Jonas Valanciunas finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds. He was a perfect 9-for-9 from the floor and added an assist and a steal. Toronto was a +20 while he was on the floor. The double-double was Valanciunas’ eighth of the season.

Toronto (26-15) continues their season-high seven-game homestand tonight, welcoming the Celtics (22-20) to Air Canada Centre. On Monday, the Raptors upped the win streak to five with a victory over the visiting Brooklyn Nets. Boston comes to town after having their three-game win streak snapped two days ago in Dallas against the Mavericks.

Isaiah Thomas – Height doesn’t measure heart. Boston’s 5’9” point guard Isaiah Thomas may be small in stature but his performances on the court are anything but. In many ways Thomas is similar to the Raptors Kyle Lowry in effort level and fearlessness. Season averages of 22 points, three rebounds and seven assists are one of the main reasons behind the Celtics revival dating back to last season when they acquired the 26-year old from Phoenix.

Kyle Lowry&lt;/strong – Despite shooting just 5/20 against Orlando in London last week, Lowry still found a way to help his team win and ended up finishing with a team-high 24 points. The Raps point guard bounced back nicely from the time difference to shoot a blistering 77% from the floor in Monday’s win over Brooklyn. Over his past 10 games Lowry is averaging 22 points, six rebounds, eight assists and three steals per game. Not too shabby.

Voting for the 2015-16 NBA All-Star starters ended Monday night.

Lowry &amp; Thomas are both strong candidates for a chance to represent their teams at the midseason classic.

Over the past month, supporters of every team have rallied to help get their favourite players into the game. Whether it’s tweeting, texting or posting on Facebook, Raptors fans have shown their support for both Lowry &amp; DeMar DeRozan.

Big thanks to everyone who spammed their friends and  social media accounts with votes non-stop every day. No matter the results tomorrow night, all our fans can hold their heads high.

Tonight marks the first time Amir Johnson returns to Toronto after moving on this past offseason.

Amir was, and is, a very likeable person and during his time in a Raptors uniform, made a positive impact on virtually everyone that came across him.

Terrence Ross is only in his fourth NBA season but when asked what impact Johnson had on him during their time together in Toronto, Ross had nothing but praise for his former teammate.

“How to interact with people, how to have fun, how to make the best of your situation at all times. He just brought a lot of happiness to the people around him."

On the other hand, DeMar DeRozan played six years with Johnson and the two still remain close friends. DeRozan has no doubt about the reception his friend will get from the Air Canada Centre crowd tonight.

“I think he’ll get a great response from the crowd. At the end of the day it’s going to be fun just competing against an old friend.”

The Raptors used a 26-10 run in the third quarter to break open a close game. Although the Celtics continued to battle in the fourth, and trimmed Toronto’s lead to single digits with less than two minutes remaining, the Raptors escaped Boston with a 113-103 victory.

For the second consecutive contest, the Raptors managed to settle down after a rocky first half to take control in the third quarter and go on to the game. On Friday, the team outscored Boston 30-21 in the quarter and went into the fourth up nine with their offence rolling. Toronto shot a dismal 33 percent in the first half to 41 percent shooting for Boston. It was a completely different story in the second as the Raptors found a groove and shot 55 percent from the floor in the second half while holding the Celtics to just 34 percent.

Terrence Ross was fantastic off the bench, pouring in 21 points in 21 minutes. Ross shot 8-for-12 from the floor, 2-for-6 from beyond the arc and 3-for-3 from the free throw line. He was aggressive early, mixing it up with three-pointers as well as drives to the basket and played the role of spark plug off the bench to perfection.

DeMar DeRozan had another rough night from the floor (5-for-15 field goals), but again refused to allow that to ruin his night. DeRozan got to the free throw line with ease, making 12 of 14 attempts in 35 minutes of playing time while also adding seven rebounds, six assists and two steals as he showed off his all-around game when his shot wasn’t falling.

For the second time this season, the Raptors had three players top the 20-point mark. In the home opener, it was DeMar DeRozan (25 points), Kyle Lowry (23 points), and Jonas Valanciunas (21 points). On Friday night, it was DeMarre Carroll (21 points), DeMar DeRozan (23 points), and Terrence Ross (21 points).

Coach Dwane Casey has preached the importance of rebounding throughout the preseason and had to be happy with his team’s efforts on the glass as seven players had at least four rebounds.43… Percent shooting from beyond the arc as Toronto connected on 11 of 26 three-point attempts and six players hit at least once from downtown. In comparison, the Celtics finished 7-for-26 from deep.71… The Raptors were red-hot in the fourth, making 12 of their 17 field goal attempts to shoot a blistering 71 percent in the quarter.36… In comparison, the Celtics shot 36 percent in the fourth, making eight of 22 field goal attempts.

The Raptors (1-0) travel to Boston (1-0) to take on the Celtics tonight in an early battle of division rivals.  Both teams won their Home Opener to start the season and will be looking to gain some early ground on each other in the Atlantic Division.  Canadian and Celtic forward, Kelly Olynyk, is eligible to return tonight after serving his one+game suspension on Wednesday.

Jonas Valanciunas - The big Lithuanian made a statement in game 1 of the 2015-16 season.  On a night where many of the Raptors players struggled at different periods of the game, Valanciunas was Mr. Consistent throughout.  He finished the night with 21 points, 15 rebounds and some timely free throws late in the game to help seal the win.  JV will look to take advantage of a smaller Celtics lineup lacking a traditional low-post big man.‎

Isaiah Thomas - What Thomas lacks in size, he certainly makes up for with his speed and athleticism.  The diminutive point guard is one of the quickest players in the league and has found a home with this Celtics team.  Despite coming off the bench, Thomas led Boston with 27 points and 7 assists in their win over the 76ers.  Toronto’s second unit will have to do their best to prevent Thomas from driving the lane and creating opportunities for his teammates.

Preseason predictions identified both Toronto and Boston as the favourties to claim the Atlantic Division crown.  Prior to the start of last season, the Celtics were thought to be in rebuild mode but found themselves competing with some of the league's better teams on a nightly basis.  Led by their young head coach Brad Stevens, Boston made the playoffs last year and after acquiring some key free agents in the offseason, they're looking to take the next step in 2015-16.

Despite the Celtics resurgence, what shouldn’t be forgotten is the fact that Toronto is the defending Division Champions the past two seasons and have no plans on relinquishing that title anytime soon. Similar to Boston, the Raptors have themselves added some key free agents this offseason in the hopes that they will help the team progress further in the playoffs.

So how do the two teams matchup?  Last year they split their season series two apiece including two heartbreaking losses for Toronto barely a week apart last April.

Shall we address the elephant Raptor in the room?  When Toronto faces Boston tonight, Amir Johnson will be playing, but no longer in a Raptors uniform.  After spending six years North of the Border where he endeared himself to the Raptors faithful, Johnson will now be sporting Celtic green and going against his former teammates and coaching staff.

“It should be fun going against an old friend,” said DeMar DeRozan.

This is not the first time DeRozan has suited up against Johnson and was asked if he remembered the matchup.

“Yeah, in my rookie year when he was with Milwaukee and when I was younger, I always played against him.”

And did DeRozan think he has an advantage facing an ex-teammate?

“I think I know him better than he knows himself."

Despite the friendships made and the good times had, both sides understand this is just another game and neither will lose sight of what’s most important - winning.

Here’s hoping the Raps play a “wicked awesome” game tonight.

BOSTON (CP) - The Boston Celtics knew they were in the playoffs. Now they can start thinking about a matchup with LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Jae Crowder hit an off-balance fall-away shot from deep on the right wing with .8 seconds left, lifting Boston to a 95-93 win over the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday that secured the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference for the Celtics.

Evan Turner and Avery Bradley each scored 14 points for Boston, which will face No. 2 seed Cleveland in the playoffs. Brandon Bass added 13 points and nine rebounds.

"Hey, to have a chance to compete against the very best in the league is a great opportunity,'' Boston coach Brad Stevens said. "It's a big mountain, but it is a great opportunity.''

It was the fifth straight win for the Celtics, who clinched a playoff spot on Monday when Brooklyn lost.

"It's exactly what we wanted, no matter who it is whether the Atlanta Hawks or Cleveland,'' Crowder said.

Kyle Lowry had 16 points for the Raptors, who are locked into the fourth seed and will face Washington. Toronto beat the Wizards in all three meetings this season.

"The way we lost tonight, we're disappointed,'' coach Dwane Casey said. "But it doesn't (spoil) the season.''

Boston collected 17 offensive rebounds and owned a 50-43 edge on the glass.

"They were crashing the boards really hard,'' Lowry said.

Lou Williams also had 16 points for Toronto, Terrence Ross scored 12 and Jonas Valanciunas' 11.

After Turner's shot was blocked out of bounds with 2.5 seconds left, Crowder caught the ensuing inbounds pass and nailed the winner.

Lowry's shot at the buzzer was blocked by Turner.

The teams were tied six times in the final quarter before Turner hustled after his own miss and found Tyler Zeller for a one-hander in the lane with 14 seconds left.

Just like a few seconds earlier, Lowry then drove the lane, tying it at 93 with 10.2 seconds to go.

Turner hit a jumper from the right baseline off an inbounds play with 35.2 seconds left to push Boston ahead 91-89, but Lowry scored on a drive down the lane, tying it.

The Raptors had opened an 87-82 lead with 4 1/2 minutes left, but Boston tied it on Marcus Smart's 3 from the right wing.

Trailing by eight early in the second half, the Celtics used a 14-5 run to take a 64-63 lead, their first since the opening quarter. Boston led 73-70 entering the final period.

The Raptors led by seven after one, pushed it to 15 late into the second quarter and held a 53-46 advantage at intermission.

Celtics: The team honoured a piece of the club's history: The play when John Havlicek stole the ball to seal the 1965 Eastern Conference final 50 years ago Wednesday. Hall of Famer Havlicek received a standing ovation when he was introduced at centre court after a video of the play was shown on the Jumbotron. Bradley limped to the locker room early in the second half with a left leg injury and didn't return. "Everybody I talked to said he's fine,'' Stevens said. "He will not play tomorrow, though.''

Despite having a playoff spot secured, Boston wanted a good showing in its last home game.
