Week 15 Power Rankings: Houston Rockets beat Golden State Warriors again, but champs still No. 1

Through the first 12 weeks of the season, the Eastern Conference had a winning record against the West. But over the last two weeks, the West has turned things around by going 22-10 in interconference games. And suddenly, it’s hard to find any consistency among teams fighting for playoff spots in the East.

The Boston Celtics remain at the top of the conference, but have lost three straight games for the first time this season. The Toronto Raptors have lost four games in the last two weeks, while the Cleveland Cavaliers are renting a place in Strugglesville. The Indiana Pacers and Washington Wizards both continue to play Jekyll and Hyde from night to night, and the Detroit Pistons are living next door to the Cavs.

Offense has been a problem across the conference. The Celtics, Cavs and Pistons all rank in the bottom 10 offensively this month and the highest ranked Eastern Conference offense in January is the sixth-ranked Charlotte Hornets.

The Philadelphia 76ers have taken advantage, winning seven of their last eight games to climb back into playoff position. They’ve also climbed a couple of spots in the Power Rankings.

  • Hero team of the week: Philadelphia (3-0) — The Sixers got to play the Celtics without Kyrie Irving and the Bucks without Giannis Antetokounmpo, but began their week with an impressive win over the full-strength Raptors.
  • Zero team of the week: Detroit (0-4) — The Pistons’ five-game losing streak includes losses at home to the Hornets and Nets.
  • Toughest schedules so far: 1. Philadelphia, 2. Chicago, 3. Dallas
  • Easiest schedules so far: 1. Washington, 2. Houston, 3. Boston
  • Schedule strength is based on cumulative opponent record, and adjusted for home vs. away and days of rest before a game.
  • High jumps of the week: Portland (+4), Oklahoma City (+3), Five teams (+2)
  • Free falls of the week: Milwaukee (-5), Detroit (-4), Boston (-3)
  • Team to watch in Week 15: L.A. Clippers — An unexpected 12-4 stretch, featuring three wins over the Rockets and Warriors, has put the Clippers in playoff position. But their margin for error remains thin and they’ll face some tough opponents this week. They’ll host the Wolves (Monday), Celtics (Wednesday) and Pelicans (Sunday), with a weird, one-day trip to Memphis for a game on Friday.

The Warriors' defense hasn't held up well against some of the league's best offenses. They've allowed more than 110 points per 100 possessions over their last 11 games, ranking 23rd defensively since Dec. 30. Eight of the last nine games were against teams that rank in the top 11 in offensive efficiency, but that group includes almost every team that they could face in the postseason. Protecting the basket has been the biggest issue, with only three teams allowing more points per game in the restricted area over that stretch. Draymond Green hasn't been the rim protector that he was last season, when opponents shot just 50 percent at the rim (the third best mark in the league) when he was there to defend it. This season, that number is 56 percent.

The Rockets made up for their off-the-court shenanigans at Staples Center on Monday by getting big wins over Minnesota and Golden State later in the week. They're 17-0 in games Chris Paul, James Harden and Clint Capela have played together, though their defense has been pretty bad (112 points allowed per 100 possessions) in the minutes that all three have been on the floor. In the games that Harden and Paul have played, their best minutes (plus-18 points per 100 possessions) remain the ones when only one of the two have been on the floor. In the wins over the Wolves and Warriors, the pair was a minus-11 in its 36 minutes, but the Rockets were a plus-40 in Paul's 34 minutes with Harden on the bench. Eric Gordon ranks second in the league in raw plus-minus, with the Rockets having outscored their opponents by 345 points with him on the floor.

The Wolves' defense, which still ranks in the top 10 in January, fell apart in the fourth quarter in Orlando on Tuesday and in Houston on Thursday, allowing 125 points per 100 possessions over those 60 minutes. But they recovered to beat the Raptors without Jimmy Butler and Jamal Crawford on Saturday, though it's possible that the absences of those two guys canceled each other out and that the defense would be better if Marcus Georges-Hunt got more minutes than Crawford going forward (or at least was a consistent part of the rotation). Their game in L.A. on Monday will be the Wolves' first chance to become the first team to match its win total from last season.

The Raptors' offense has had some hiccups over the last couple of weeks, scoring less than a point per possession in five of their last eight games. The offense has undergone a transformation this season, but they still need their role players to make shots. So it's not good that Pascal Siakam (17 percent), OG Anunoby (17 percent), Serge Ibaka (20 percent) and Norman Powell (23 percent) rank as four of the eight worst 3-point shooters over the last month, nor that C.J. Miles has had some bad shooting nights of late. Continued struggles can break down the trust that the Raptors stars have in their teammates and make the ball start sticking again. There are some worrisome assist-percentage numbers (four games under 50 percent) in that January game log.

Through a six-game winning streak, the Celtics were able to grind through some offensive struggles. But the offense has become a problem as they've lost three straight games at home. Kyrie Irving's absence was felt against Philadelphia on Thursday, but Irving had shot just 35 percent over his previous five games. And when he had a big game (40 points) against Orlando on Sunday, his teammates shot 3-for-20 from 3-point range. The Celtics rank last offensively in January, having scored less than a point per possession in six of their seven games this month. The 3-point shooting is a problem (the Celtics have four of the 39 players who have shot less than 30 percent on at least 20 3-point attempts this month), but so is a lack of free throws. No combination of players on this year's roster has been able to account for the 8.5 free throw attempts that Isaiah Thomas averaged last season.

Sunday's game against Indiana was the Spurs' third loss in their last four games (a stretch in which they've scored a paltry 95 points per 100 possessions). It was also the start of a new era, with Tony Parker coming off the bench behind new starting point guard Dejounte Murray. The Spurs' second-ranked defense has been at its best (94 points allowed per 100 possessions) with Murray on the floor, but it will be interesting to see if they can play Parker and Patty Mills together for extended minutes off the bench. In Mills' 7 1/2 seasons in San Antonio, the two have logged just 490 total minutes (including playoffs) together. The Pacers shot 56 percent in their 19 minutes together (and 37 percent in the other 29 minutes) on Sunday.

But James Johnson (with the help of Josh Richardson) did a wonderful Reggie Miller impression, Dwight Howard committed one of the worst fouls you'll ever see, and the Heat climbed back to within a half game of the Cavs for fourth place in the East with a miracle win in Charlotte. With Johnson's 3-pointer, they are now a league-best 25-for-51 (49 percent) on clutch threes, with eight different guys accounting for that success. They've allowed 110 points per 100 possessions so far on their five-game road trip (ranking 28th in opponent turnover rate last week), which concludes with a game against the league's No. 2 offense on Monday.

The 148 points they put on the Cavs have them within striking distance of being a top-10 team on both ends of the floor, with their offense ranking fourth in January. Improvement has come with better shooting in the paint, with Steven Adams getting more opportunities, via both his offensive rebounds and passes from Russell Westbrook. Welcome to Strugglesville. Population 148. That's how many points the Cavs allowed the Thunder to score on Saturday and how many David Blatt didn't want to allow in the Turkish League All-Star Game. (His wish did not come true.) As the Cavs have gone 3-9 since Christmas, they've ranked in the bottom five in both opponent effective field goal percentage (27th) and defensive rebounding percentage (29th). So their opponents have shot too well and, as Steven Adams would tell you, they haven't rebounded well enough on the shots that have missed. Their defensive rebounding percentage has been highest with Tristan Thompson on the floor, so a change in the starting lineup may be in order. Speaking of shots that have missed, LeBron James has shot 27 percent from outside the paint over the last 13 games after shooting 41 percent from the outside over the first 32. He's missed his last 14 3-point attempts and among 178 players who have attempted at least 25 since Christmas, only a pair of Raptors have shot worse on those threes than James (10-for-50).

He's not exactly DeAndre Jordan when it comes to finishing at the rim, but he ranks 64th in mid-range field goal percentage (35.5 percent) among 72 players with at least 100 mid-range attempts, so the Blazers have to get him shots closer to the basket.

Kemba Walker hasn't shot nearly as well as he did last season, but if he doesn't make the All-Star team as a reserve this week (or if he's traded by Feb. 8), you can probably blame the reserves on his own team. The Hornets have a point differential of a 31-13 team with Walker on the floor and that of a 5-39 team with him off the floor. Their brutal collapse against the Heat on Saturday gave them nine losses in games in which they outscored their opponent with Walker on the floor. They got the more important win (beating the eighth-place Clippers) on Saturday, but the only way they stay in the playoff picture is to put some road wins together. The Grizz have a top-10 offense (109 points scored per 100 possessions) since Christmas, with two top-five defenses coming to town over the next three days.

Through their first 41 games, the Suns had never taken 40 percent of their shots from 3-point range. But they've done so in each of their last five, with Isaiah Canaan, Troy Daniels and Dragan Bender all shooting better than 45 percent on at least 15 attempts from beyond the arc. Daniels is one of six players (two MVP candidates and four reserves) who have averaged at least 10 3-point attempts per 36 minutes. More threes gives the Suns a higher ceiling offensively and give them a better chance to play spoiler. The last five games have been their best offensive stretch (108 points scored per 100 possessions) since early December and include wins over the Thunder and Nuggets, as well as two of the five games in which they've assisted on at least 70 percent of their buckets.

After coming back from a 14-point deficit against the Spurs and a 19-point deficit against the Pelicans, the Hawks are 5-3 at home against the Western Conference, with the Jazz and Wolves playing at the Fortress in the next eight days. Dennis Schroder not only ranks second in drives per game, but has been one of the league's best high-volume jump-shooters off the dribble. He clinched the win over San Antonio by getting a switch onto Davis Bertans on consecutive possessions, draining a pull-up jumper on the first and driving past Bertans on the second. He then had 15 assists against New Orleans before Kent Bazemore hit the game-winner over Anthony Davis.

Somebody woke up the Magic, who picked up two quality wins (over Wolves and Celtics) last week and almost completed a comeback from 23 points down in Cleveland on Thursday, with Elfrid Payton's game-winner rolling off the rim. (Did his hair get in the way again?) Their best minutes have come with reserves on the floor (Khem Birch had was a plus-13 with 12 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks in the Minnesota win) and the turnaround has come on defense. They've allowed just 101 points per 100 possessions over the three games, and while they're own shooting struggles have continued, their opponent 3-point percentage (29 percent over the last five games) looks like he did when they were winning games in October.

George Hill came off the bench for the first time this season on Monday, was back in the starting lineup and had one of his best games as a King on Wednesday, was in trade rumors on Friday, and got DNP'd Friday night. Hill has shot only slightly worse than he did last season in Utah, but his turnovers are up and the 113 points per 100 possessions the Kings have allowed with him on the floor are almost 10 more than any of his other teams have. They've lost seven straight and began a six-game trip with an 18-point loss in Memphis on Friday. The Grizzlies have two wins by more than 14 points and they've both been against the Kings, who are 0-18 in games decided by 15 or more.
