Steps away from the UCLA Health Training Center on March 23, a local soccer field was transformed into a game show a la “Nickelodeon Guts.”

The Lakers partnered with UCLA Health to provide a Field Day for about 200 kids from Playworks Southern California, with players, staff, Laker Girls and ‘90s celebrities joining together for a day of promoting “the importance of health and fitness.”

Original “Guts” host Mike O’Malley emceed the event, which included Lakers players a host of actors who first appeared on the ’90s scene: Danielle Fishel (“Boy Meets World”), Haley Joel Osment (“The Sixth Sense”), Patrick Renna (“The Sandlot”) and Kirsten Storms (“Zenon” trilogy).

The day of fun and games included a hula hoop relay; sponge bucket challenge; dodgeball; tug of war; “noisemeter” challenge; and relay race. And while the kids may have outnumbered the NBA players about 10 to 1, the Lakers were like (really) oversized kids with they embraced the day’s competition.

JaVale McGee and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope had a particularly great time, as they led their team to field day victory at the end of a day filled with unforgettable memories.

The Los Angeles Lakers teamed up with City of Hope, the Official Cancer Research Hospital of the Lakers, to host to over 250 students from local elementary schools for an annual Fit for Life Field Day. The fun-filled day consisted of promoting healthy lifestyle choices and wellness through nutrition and physical exercise. All participants were provided a nutritional lunch where Mayra Serrano, the Manager in Center of Community Alliance for Research &amp; Education at City of Hope, spoke to the kids about how exercising one hour a day can prevent chronic illness later in life as well as the importance of high quality eating habits.

Playworks, an organization dedicated to promoting leadership in students through activities, helped bring positive energy to the day by celebrating being healthy in a fun way. Each student received a Fit for Life shirt with corresponding Laker’s jersey colors and were divided into teams by school. All teams had Lakers players and Lakers Girls, along with Lakers staff volunteers, help lead them through competitions for points to lead to a championship trophy. Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and Ivica Zubac were among the Lakers players participating throughout the day.

There were a variety of activities that all students participated in to help secure points for their teams. The day’s first event was a hula hoop chain competition, where students had to use teamwork and communicate at a high level to be successful. Next on the agenda was an all-out five team dodgeball game, where the team with the most students standing at the end were the winners. Once students were eliminated they could also receive bonus points for their team by encouraging those still playing. Both doing well in the competitions and supporting other teams led to the ultimate success of scoring points.

The next competitions featured were: a sponge bucket game, 50-on-50 tug of war, and a noise-o-meter measuring the loudest and most excited team. Lastly, the students competed in the ultimate team relay competition. This game featured a potato sack portion, dizzy bat, math question, weaving in and out of cones and more, to encompass both education and physical endurance. Once all events were completed and points were totaled, a winning school was awarded the grand prize - the Lakers Fit for Life Championship Trophy. While healthy competition is always fun, every student from Playworks won at the end of the by receiving a Lakers gift bags to commemorate the day’s events. The Lakers were proud to partner with City of Hope to help kids from Playworks not only exercise, but also learn about a healthy lifestyle in a fun environment.

On Thursday March 23, 300 fourth-grade students came out to play with the Lakers at the 8th Annual Lakers Fit for Life Health Fair, presented by City of Hope. It was an exciting afternoon of lessons in nutrition and fun exercise with the Laker Girls and Lakers players. The fair is the highlight of the Lakers Fit for Life initiative, which aims to educate the community and the youth about the importance of physical fitness and nutrition.

City of Hope kicked off the event with a presentation about the importance of eating healthy. Marisa Bowers, PhD, got the students fired up for the day, while discussing how to live a healthy lifestyle. Bowers is one of City of Hope’s Science Education Program Award Collaborative program coordinators who focuses on science education with students.

The students came from 10 different Los Angeles Schools as a part of the Playworks program. Playworks is an organization that encourages positive play in schools, where students can have fun in safe environments, become leaders and carry their positive playground experiences into the classroom.

After Bowers spoke, the Laker Girls jumped in and led a warmup for all of the students. After they loosened up, the kids were joined by more special guests, the Lakers players! Thomas Robinson, Metta World Peace, Tyler Ennis and David Nwaba led the students in various schoolyard games at different stations.

World Peace pitched to a group of kids playing kickball, while Ennis and Nwaba led teams of youngsters in a classic game of dodgeball. Thomas Robinson was “it” in a giant game of freeze tag! The students rotated from station to station and every student had a chance to play in each game and to compete with the Lakers players.

Each student received a Fit For Life bag with the Los Angeles Lakers t-shirt and a healthy lunch, consisting of turkey, lettuce and tomato sandwiches from Jersey Mike’s Subs and organic bananas, oranges and apples from Melissa’s Fruit.

At the end of an afternoon of fitness and fun, the students from Playworks received Lakers City of Hope gift bags and health and wellness tips to last a lifetime. Thanks to City of Hope, The Lakers and the kids from Playworks had a fun-filled day, one that will serve as a lifelong reminder of the importance of healthy lifestyles.
