ATLANTA –- The Georgia Association of Broadcasters is pleased to announce its Hall of Fame class of 2017. This year’s inductees include legendary Voice of the Atlanta Hawks Steve Holman, John Ray of WRDW and WAGT in Augusta, Don Benson former President and CEO of Lincoln Financial/Jefferson Pilot and Troy Mattox owner of WKUB, WWUF and WSGT in Waycross and Blackshear.

“This year’s inductees represent a wide range of broadcasting careers. We have inductees, who have experienced significant long-term corporate success in radio and television, and inductee who while serving our country in Vietnam made a pact with his now business partner and best friend to own a small market radio station in their hometown, and an inductee who has entertained millions of NBA and Atlanta basketball fans as the voice of the Hawks for more than a quarter of a century. Combined this year’s four inductees have committed over 160 years to the broadcasting industry,” said Bob Houghton, President of the Georgia Association of Broadcasters.

This year’s Hall of Fame class brings the total number of inductees to 81 since its inception. Consideration for this honor is given to broadcasters with a minimum of 20 years in broadcasting with a significant portion of their career spent in Georgia, a solid record of achievement including: rating dominance and local/national awards, and a history of dedication to the communities they serve.

The 2017 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held at UGA’s Richard B. Russell Special Collections Library on February 24th. An honorees reception will be held before the event to begin at 11:00 AM, with the Hall of Fame luncheon to follow.

ATLANTA -- Atlanta Hawks radio voice Steve Holman took home the Gabby Award for Best Sports Play-by-Play Broadcast, given by the Georgia Association of Broadcasters on June 10 in their annual awards ceremony at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta Perimeter Hotel. Holman also won the award in 2015.

Hawks games featuring Holman can be heard on the Hawks’ flagship station, CBS RADIO’S SportsRadio 92-9 The Game, as well as partner stations on the Hawks Radio Network.

“Steve Holman is a beloved broadcaster not only in Atlanta, but by his peers across the country,” said Terry Foxx, Program Director at WZGC-FM SportsRadio 92-9 The Game. “We are very proud to have him and the Atlanta Hawks as a part of our family on SportsRadio 92-9 The Game.”

Holman was the 2014 Georgia Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (NSSA), and was recognized in 2015 by the Georgia State House of Representatives (House Resolution 308). 

A 2011 Georgia Radio Hall of Fame inductee, Holman has broadcast more than 2,500 Hawks games total (currently 2,329 in-a-row including regular season and playoffs). The “Voice of the Hawks” has won numerous awards for sports reporting throughout his career, including the Georgia Associated Press Award for his Hawks coverage.

ATLANTA -- Atlanta Hawks radio play-by-play announcer Steve Holman will be honored by the Georgia State House of Representatives on the House floor on Monday, March 23 at approximately 10:30 a.m. after meeting with Gov. Nathan Deal.

House Resolution 308 will recognize Holman for being named the 2014 Georgia Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (NSSA) and for the exceptional work he has done in his 30-year career.

A 2011 Georgia Radio Hall of Fame inductee, Holman has never missed a broadcast, a span of nearly 2,500 games, including the last 2,207 in-a-row (regular season and playoffs).  The “Voice of the Hawks” has won numerous awards for sports reporting throughout his career, including the Georgia Associated Press Award for his Hawks coverage.

Holman can be heard on the FM dial in Atlanta on the Hawks’ flagship station, CBS RADIO’s SportsRadio 92-9 The Game.

ATLANTA -- Atlanta Hawks radio broadcaster Steve Holman has been voted the 2014 Georgia Sportscaster of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (NSSA). He will be honored during the NSSA’s annual awards banquet on June 8, 2015 in Salisbury, NC.

Holman, in his 30th season as the “Voice of the Hawks,” has never missed a broadcast, a run of nearly 2,500 games. His play-by-play streak, which began in March of 1989, is currently at 2,175, including regular season and playoffs. Along with several awards for sports reporting, Holman was inducted into the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame in 2011 and has won the Georgia Associated Press Award for his Hawks coverage.

During the 2014 NBA Draft, Hawks TV will be simultaneously broadcasting live draft coverage from Philips Arena, which can be seen on Hawks.com.

The voice of the Hawks, Steve Holman, may have uncovered history.

If you haven't heard of the word "selfie," you've probably been living under a rock...or at least without a smartphone.  The modern day term refers to taking your own photo with a camera, usually a phone, and uploading it to social media for the world to see.

The term "super selfies" may not be as common, but that's the group version of a single selfie.  The reliable (?) Internet site Wikipedia says group selfies have been traced back to photos taken in the late 1990s, but Holman has found evidence that may give historians reasons to rewrite history books.

When the Hawks went to the Soviet Union in the summer of 1988, Holman was there, and it appears he brought a video camera to document the trip.  It was historic, after all, as the Hawks became the first NBA team to play a game there, so it's understandable that he'd want to remember it.  But somewhere along the way, Holman caught another act on tape.  That's right...the photo above seems to show Hawks legend Dominique Wilkins and 1988 teammate Doc Rivers, now the coach of the Los Angeles Clippers, taking a selfie!

Holman probably thought nothing of it at the time, but now...now it's iconic.  He tweeted the revolutionary discovery on Thursday:

We need to track down the owner of that camera and hope he got the film developed!

We'll never know if this was the first modern day selfie ever taken, but it could very well have been the first one ever recorded.  If so, we're proud to say we've paved the way for young Millennials' photo-taking habits today.
