NBA Draft

Atlanta Hawks

ATLANTA – The Atlanta Hawks have acquired the draft rights to center Henri Veesaar (henry VEH-sarr), the 52nd-overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, from the LA Clippers, in exchange for the draft rights to Narcisse Ngoy, the 57th-overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, and cash considerations.

Veesaar saw action in 31 games (all starts) during the 2025-26 season at North Carolina, averaging 17.0 points, 8.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 1.2 blocks in 31.4 minutes of play (.608 FG%, .426 3FG%). A member of the 2025-26 All-ACC Second Team and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award finalist, Veesaar ranked eighth in the ACC in scoring, fourth in rebounding, and second in field goal percentage.

He recorded 15 double-doubles this past season, the second-most in the ACC and 17th-most nationally, and became the first player in ACC history with 30+ three-pointers (40) and 30+ blocks (37), while shooting .600%-or-better from the floor in a single season.

The 6-11 center appeared in 97 career games across three collegiate seasons (36 starts), suiting up for Arizona (2022-25, did not play – redshirt – during 2023-24 season) and UNC (2025-26). Veesaar finished his collegiate career averaging 9.7 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 1.3 assists in 20.1 minutes (.603 FG%, .383 3FG%, .654 FT%).

Born in Tallinn, Estonia, Veesaar represented Estonia in the 2023 FIBA World Cup European Qualifiers and spent three seasons in Real Madrid’s youth system in Spain.

Hawks Pick Flemings with the No. 8 Pick in the Draft, Ejiofor at No. 23

ATLANTA – The Atlanta Hawks selected guard Kingston (KING-stun) Flemings with the No. 8 pick in the 2026 NBA Draft and forward Zuby Ejiofor (ZOO-bee EDGE-eh-for) with the No. 23 pick in the first round of the 2026 NBA Draft.

“We’re really excited about the two guys we brought in,” said Hawks President of Basketball Operations Onsi Saleh. “I felt like we brought in the two best competitors in the draft. Both Kingston and Zuby are guys that compete at a high level on both ends of the court every day and fit everything that we are about. We couldn’t be happier with tonight’s outcome and are excited about adding those guys to our program.”

Flemings appeared in 37 games (all starts) during his lone season at Houston, averaging 16.1 points, 5.2 assists, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.5 steals in 31.7 minutes (.476 FG%, .387 3FG%, .845 FT%), leading the Cougars in points per game, assists per game, and steals per game. He poured in 594 total points, the most points by a Houston freshman in program history, and became the first freshman in school history to start 37 games.

A consensus All-Big 12 First Team choice, the 6-3 guard was named to the 2025-26 All-America Second Team by USBWA, NABC, and Sporting News, becoming the first Cougars freshman to earn All-America honors and the first to be named to an All-Conference First Team since the 1979-80 season. He becomes Houston’s fourth first-round pick since the NBA went to a two-round draft in 1989.

Flemings, a six-time Big 12 Starting Five of the Week honoree, poured in 42 points at No. 12 Texas Tech on Jan. 24, the most points in a single game by a Houston freshman, and swiped 8 steals in a win over Florida State on Dec. 6, the second most in a single outing in program history. He led Houston with 12 20-point outings and tied for the team lead with 29 double-digit scoring efforts.

Born in Newport News, Virginia, Flemings attended William J. Brennan High School in San Antonio, Texas, earning Gatorade Texas Player of the Year in 2024-25.

Ejiofor played in 131 collegiate contests (73 starts) across four seasons, suiting up for Kansas (2022-23) and St. John’s (2023-26). He owned averages of 10.0 points, 5.4 rebounds, 1.7 assists, and 1.4 blocks in 21.0 minutes (.550 FG%, .709 FT%).

In his final season at St. John’s, the 6-8 forward saw action in 37 games (all starts), averaging 16.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 1.2 steals, and 2.1 blocks in 30.0 minutes, leading St. John’s to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1999. He was unanimously named the BIG EAST Player of the Year, the league’s first undivided selection since Creighton’s Doug McDermott in 2013-14, along with earning BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Player, and BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the first player in league history to win all four awards in the same season.

Ejiofor left St. John’s ranked fifth all-time on the career blocks list, recording 165 rejections in his three seasons. He recorded consecutive games with 8 blocks on Dec. 6 vs. Ole Miss and Dec. 13 vs. Iona, becoming the first NCAA Division I player since 2021 with consecutive 8-block performances. Ejiofor notched a 16-point, 12-rebound, 10-assist triple-double in a win against Villanova on Feb. 28, becoming just the fourth player in St. John’s men’s basketball history to secure a triple-double.

A native of Garland, Texas, Ejiofor will be inducted into the St. John’s Men’s Basketball Legacy Ring of Honor this coming season.

Atlanta Hawks Select Kingston Flemings and Zuby Ejiofor in First Round of 2026 NBA Draft

The Hawks are going to land a high draft pick in the upcoming 2026 NBA Draft, and Sunday's NBA Lottery (3:00 PM ET) will let them know exactly how high that pick will be.

As a playoff team, the Hawks would not normally participate in the event, but last year the Hawks made a draft-night trade with the New Orleans Pelicans to acquire Asa Newell and a 2026 first-round draft pick (the most favorable of either New Orleans and Milwaukee) in exchange for Derik Queen.

As a result, the Hawks will have a 40.2 percent chance of garnering a top-four pick from a loaded draft class.

The lottery process determines which teams will pick in the first four spots on June 23; the remaining ten teams will be slotted into a draft order based upon the 2025-26 winning percentage of the teams who originally held those picks.

The most likely outcome for a single position, by a large margin, is that the Hawks end up with the 8th-overall pick: a 30.18 percent chance. The second-most probable outcome is that they land in the 7th spot. After those two, the four next-most likely results involve them leapfrogging into one of the top-four spots.

Below is the full list of likelihoods, in order from most probable to least:

· 7th pick – 19.75 percent

· 4th pick – 10.30 percent

· 3rd pick – 10.14 percent

· 2nd pick – 9.97 percent

· 1st pick – 9.80 percent

· 9th pick – 9.19 percent

· 10th pick – 0.67 percent

· 11th pick – less than 0.01 percent

As a point of emphasis, there is a zero percent chance that the Hawks end up with the 5th pick or the 6th pick, because once the top four picks are assigned and the Hawks are not one of them, there are guaranteed to be at least two teams remaining who will pick before Atlanta.

Hawks Vice President of Player Personnel Daniel Starkman will represent the Hawks in the behind-the-scenes drawing room, while General Manager Onsi Saleh will be on stage for the televised announcement of the results.

As a result of the trade, New Orleans cannot end up with a lottery pick, so they will not have a representative at the event. Atlanta and Milwaukee will get the two picks with, as noted before, Atlanta receiving the better of the two picks. The revealed envelopes will have the Hawks and Bucks logos, so what you see is what you get: If you see a Bucks logo, that pick is going to Milwaukee. If you see a Hawks logo, that pick is going to Atlanta.

The actual lottery procedure takes place away from the stage in a separate room prior to the televised broadcast. Fourteen ping-pong balls numbered 1 through 14 are placed in a lottery machine. There are 1,001 possible combinations when four balls are drawn out of 14, without regard to their order of selection. Before the lottery, 1,000 of those 1,001 combinations are assigned to the 14 participating lottery teams.

The calculation of the odds of the Hawks getting the top pick are relatively straightforward. New Orleans' draft position resulted in them getting 68 of the 1000 combinations, and Milwaukee's draft position saw them get 30. Adding 68 and 30 and dividing that result by 1000 results in 0.098, a 9.8 percent chance. The calculation for the likelihood of them landing in the #2 spot is a more intricate calculation, as are the odds for #3 and #4 spots and so on.

The drawing process occurs as follows: All 14 balls are placed in the lottery machine and mixed for 20 seconds, then the first ball is selected. The process is then repeated three more times in 10-second intervals. The team that has been assigned that four-number combination will receive the No. 1 pick.

This process is repeated with the same ping-pong balls and same machine for picks Nos. 2, 3 and 4. If the same team comes up more than once, the result is discarded, and another four-ball combination is selected. Also, if the one unassigned combination of 11-12-13-14 is drawn, then the result is ignored and the process repeated.

Here is what the selection process looked like last year.

The NBA held a tiebreaker event for its draft order on Apr. 20. New Orleans and Dallas finished with identical 26-56 records. The Hawks got favorable news when New Orleans won the tiebreak over Dallas. It got the Hawks one extra combination from New Orleans in the lottery pool (68 instead of 67, to add to the 30 from Milwaukee) and it ensured that if none of the New Orleans, Milwaukee or Dallas picks jump into the top-4 spots, then the Hawks will pick before Dallas.

With a young core in the place and coming off of a 46-win season that landed them in the playoffs, the Hawks are looking to continue building into a sustainable contender. Sunday's NBA Lottery will determine what the next exciting piece might look like.

ATLANTA – The Atlanta Hawks have signed rookie forward Asa Newell, the team announced today. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Newell’s draft rights were acquired by the Hawks on June 25, 2025, from the New Orleans Pelicans, as well as a 2026 first-round draft pick (most favorable of New Orleans and Milwaukee), in exchange for the draft rights to Derik Queen, the No. 13 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

Newell appeared in 33 games (all starts) in his lone collegiate season at Georgia, averaging 15.4 points, 6.9 rebounds, 1.0 steal, and 1.0 block in 29.0 minutes (.543 FG%, .748 FT%). He earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors four times during the 2024-25 campaign, matching Anthony Edwards’ program record set in 2019-20.

The first freshman to lead Georgia in scoring (15.4 ppg) and rebounding (6.9 rpg) since Jumaine Jones in 1997-98, Newell secured seven double-doubles this past season, tied for the fourth-most in the nation amongst all freshmen. He registered a 21-point, 17-rebound double-double on March 12 against Oklahoma, the most rebounds by a Bulldog since Toumani Camara’s 17 boards against Montana in Dec. 2020.

In his collegiate debut against Tennessee Tech on Nov. 4, Newell poured in 26 points on 13-22 shooting from the field, in addition to 11 rebounds, one steal and three blocks in 32 minutes of play. His 26 points are tied with Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall-of-Famer and Atlanta Hawks legend, Dominique Wilkins, for the highest offensive output by a Bulldog freshmen in their debut.

Prior to playing collegiately at Georgia, the Atlanta native played at Montverde Academy in Montverde, Florida as a junior and senior in high school, alongside Cooper Flagg, Liam McNeeley, and Derik Queen.

Hawks Complete Trade with New Orleans Pelicans; Acquire Asa Newell and a 2026 First-Round Draft Pick (Most Favorable of New Orleans and Milwaukee), in Exchange for the Draft Rights of Derik Queen, the No. 13 Pick in the 2025 NBA Draft

ATLANTA – The Atlanta Hawks acquired the draft rights of Asa Newell, the No. 23 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, from the New Orleans Pelicans, as well as a 2026 first-round draft pick (most favorable of New Orleans and Milwaukee), in exchange for Derik Queen, the No. 13 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

“Asa is unbelievable. With where the league is going, people with size and athleticism like that just make sense,” said Hawks General Manager Onsi Saleh. “He’s a great screener, a great human being, a ridiculous athlete, and a really smart player too. He is an unbelievable competitor and does things that impact winning.”

In his collegiate debut against Tennessee Tech on Nov. 4, the 6-9 forward poured in 26 points on 13-22 shooting from the field, in addition to 11 rebounds, 1 steal, and 3 blocks in 32 minutes of play. His 26 points are tied with Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall-of-Famer and Atlanta Hawks legend, Dominique Wilkins, for the highest offensive output by a Bulldog freshman in his debut.

Atlanta Hawks Acquire the Draft Rights of Asa Newell, the No. 23 Pick in the 2025 NBA Draft

After winning the NBA Lottery and drafting Zaccharie Risacher last summer, the Hawks have already had another bit of good fortune headed into summer of 2025.

The Hawks got the best of all possible outcomes a bit over a month ago, when the Los Angeles Lakers won a four-way tie-break, and the Sacramento Kings won a separate tie-break as well. Stemming from previous trades that sent out Dejounte Murray and Kevin Huerter, respectively, the Hawks own the rights to both of those picks in the 2025 NBA Draft that begins Wednesday night.

Those picks – #22 from Los Angeles and #13 from Sacramento – will be made under the direction of new General Manager Onsi Saleh, who was promoted to his post April 21.

"We have had 80+ players come through our program here," Saleh said when meeting with Atlanta media for the first time Monday, "and we have probably spoken or connected with at least 100 when you take the draft combine in Chicago into account, so we have some flexibility and some optionality, but I really like our two picks at #13 and #22."

Saleh laid out his approach to the draft in direct terms.

"When it comes to the draft, I always pick the best player. That's my philosophy; I don't believe in picking for a position. If there's a guy that makes sense for us, we are going to take him, and always the best player. That's the philosophy."

Before coming to Atlanta in 2024, Saleh spent the previous three seasons as an executive with the Golden State Warriors, where he rose to the title of vice president of basketball strategy & team counsel.

Saleh also worked for the San Antonio Spurs for five seasons, ending his tenure there as the team’s director of strategy & process/chief of staff.

"We are just looking to build something that is consistent, that has continuity and stability for a long time instead of just being a one-hit wonder type of team," Saleh said, "so we are trying to build this into a program, and the two places I came from were an example of that. Why not be good for a long time?"

Saleh also drew inspiration from the two teams that just completed the NBA Finals.

"One thing we saw from these two teams in Oklahoma City and Indiana: They were developmentally focused. The rules have changed when it comes to roster construction, but if you look at those two teams, they really developed. They built a culture, and the chemistry and cohesion between those groups stood out when you watched them play."

Of course, the exercise of building a championship-caliber team goes far beyond the draft to include re-signing players within the organization, as well as finding new players via free agency and trades.

"I feel like we are in a great position, honestly," Saleh said. "When you look at our season last year, we had some injuries, but still won 40 games despite those injuries. Again, with the optionality that we're adding to our group, our guys are developing still, for sure, but we have got potentially two more guys coming in, but we also have optionality and different mechanisms to add to this team with the mid-level (exception), and the trade exception, and things like that."

In terms of adding to the team through non-draft means, Saleh pointed to two things. First, he mentioned getting players with experience, then he circled back to his draft philosophy.

"The best players that are available will make our team better."

Wednesday night, Saleh will take his first steps as a lead executive with the end-goal of making the Hawks a championship-level team.
