In the NBA's 71st All-Star Game, it turned out to be a close one and ended in thrilling fashion.

The game's MVP Steph Curry knocked down 50 points, including a huge flurry in the third quarter. LeBron James, the team's captain, knocked down a tough fall-away shot for the win, to get to the target score 163. Giannis Antetokounmpo finished with 30 points and 13 rebounds.

For the hometown Cavs, Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen played well in their first all-star games of their career. Garland scored 13 points and handed out three assists on three made threes. Allen nearly doubled-up with 10 points and nine rebounds. Both members of the Wine &amp; Gold played 24 minutes.

All-Star Weekend in Cleveland is now capped off with members of the host side winning in all events participated in.

In a spectacular weekend-long celebration in Northeast Ohio, it wasn’t a Cavalier who sealed the victory in Sunday night’s All-Star Game in Cleveland. Instead, it was a couple dudes that were born in Akron.

Both sired the Rubber City, Steph Curry erupted for 50 points and LeBron James drilled the game-winning fadeaway, as Team LeBron took the 163-160 decision the NBA’s 71st annual midseason classic at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

Curry’s 50-point performance easily earned him MVP honors and James’ game-winning bucket resulted in $450,000 for Kent State’s “I Promise” Scholars – capping an extraordinary weekend on the North Coast.

After three competitive quarters – at least on the scoreboard – both teams fought to reach the target score of 163 in the fourth.

Cavaliers first-time All-Stars Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen started the fourth quarter for Team LeBron – and each got on the scoreboard in the period – but it was James and Curry who did much of the heavy lifting. After Zach LaVine’s three-pointer got Team Durant to within one, 161-160, LeBron backed down the Bulls guard on the next possession, lifting and connecting on a 17-footer to end the affair.

One night after joining their teammate, Evan Mobley, to win the Taco Bell Skills Challenge, Garland and Allen both were rock-solid in their initial career All-Star Game appearances.

Garland – who won both events he participated in this weekend – finished with 13 points on Sunday, going 5-of-12 from the floor, including 3-of-7 from long-distance, adding three assists and a pair of steals.

”I’ve been dreaming about this my whole life,” said the 3rd-year guard. “At the age of 22, being so young, it was pretty cool to just being here with all the greats – just to even touch a basketball and experience everything. It was pretty cool.”

Allen was even more efficient – netting 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting, grabbing nine rebounds to lead all reserves and swatting a pair of shots in the victory.

After the league celebrated its 50th anniversary the last time the All-Star Game rolled into Cleveland back in 1997 – presenting the game’s 50 greatest players of all-time. On Sunday night, the NBA marked 75 years with the top 75 – including several of the night’s participants, including James, Curry, Chris Paul and Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The biggest ovations were reserved for Michael Jordan, the late Kobe Bryant and James – who was making his 18th career All-Star appearance in the arena he called home for 11 seasons.

James, with his idol in the gym, paid tribute to the Bulls superstar following Sunday’s win.

"I always wanted to be like him, growing up,” said James. “It’s crazy that the shot tonight was a fadeaway – and it was inspired by MJ. I didn’t want to waste the opportunity, because we’re not in the same building a lot. It meant something to me.”

Joel Embiid led Team Durant with 36 points, going 14-for-20, including 5-of-8 from deep, to go with 10 boards in the loss. Along with Curry’s 50-burger for the winning squad, Giannis added 30 points and a game-high 12 rebounds while James pumped in 24 points on 11-of-24 shooting, including the game-winner.

After an incredible weekend in Cleveland, the regular season restarts for the Wine and Gold – who’ll begin the 24-game homestretch of the season on Thursday night in Motown.

The Cavaliers take down the Rooks in the final round of the Skills Competition, with Evan Mobley hitting the winning half-court shot, securing the Championship on Saturday night.

The Cavs pulled ahead after winning the first challenge with Evan Mobley and Darius Garland both scoring over 18 points each. After falling short in the second challenge, the Cavs and the Antetokounmpos participated in a 3-point shot-for-shot challenge to break the tie in which Darius Garland came out on top, sending the Cavs to the final half-court challenge.

The Rooks made their half-court shot in a little over 9 seconds. The Cavs came out and hit the winner after 5.5 seconds when Evan Mobley sunk his first attempt.

The NBA’s regular season took a break this weekend, but one thing has remained constant: The Cavaliers keep winning.

The Wine and Gold have enjoyed a charmed campaign so far, and All-Star Weekend in Cleveland has only served as extension of the positive mojo. One night after Darius Garland and Isaac Okoro helped Team Barry capture the Clorox Rising Stars Game, a trio of Cavaliers teamed up to take the Taco Bell Skills Challenge in dramatic fashion on All-Star Saturday night.

The Cavs were one of three teams competing in the night’s opening event – with the young troika of Darius Garland, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen squaring off against the Rooks (Cade Cunningham, Josh Giddey and Scottie Barnes) and the Antetokounmpo brothers (Giannis, Thanasis and Alex).

The competition breaks down into three rounds – and the Cavs youngbloods served notice in the first, Team Shooting, netting 44 points on some deadly marksmanship by both Garland and Mobley. The Cavs fell behind in the Team Passing round, but bounced back in the Team Relay phase.

The Cavs and Antetokounmpos were tied after that first round, forcing a (brief) three-point shootout between Garland and Giannis. Garland calmly drilled his attempt and the Wine and Gold advanced to the title round against the Rooks.

Garland didn’t shoot particularly well in the following round, but he had plenty of support.

“I got two of the best players in the league on my team,” said the 3rd-year man from Vanderbilt, who’ll appear in his first career All-Star Game on Sunday. “So yeah, I had confidence the whole game.”

After another tie following three rounds against the freshman trio – the title would be decided by the first team to sink a shot from halfcourt.

It only took the Rooks’ Cunningham – who earned MVP honors in Friday night’s Rising Stars Game – 9.9 seconds to drill his halfcourt bomb. But it’s been Cleveland’s week (and year) – and Evan Mobley stepped to the timeline and drilled his dagger just 5.5 seconds into the extra session.

The Cavs prized rookie, who said the ball felt good coming off his hand, was his normal cool and collected self after the win. “I was just going out there and having fun,” said Mobley. “I just shot it, and almost all of them went in – so it was all good.”

The Wine and Gold have been one of the league’s most surprising teams headed into the midseason classic, and they’ve attributed much of that success to chemistry. That was the case again in Saturday’s Skills Challenge.

”I think just the camaraderie that we have – on and off the court – helped us win,” said Allen, who’ll make his first career All-Star Game appearance for the Eastern Conference on Sunday. “We had to go up against some brothers, so they have a tighter bond than us. But I still give us credit for how we compete for each other.”

The Cavaliers have already had an outstanding weekend – and they still have two young stars ready to show out on Sunday night. The only question is what they’ll do for an encore.

Team Barry, the team that Isaac Okoro and Evan Mobley were on for the 2022 Clorox Rising Stars Game won game one of the newly revamped format and advanced to the finals.

The final game was won by the first team to hit 25, an ode to the NBA's 75th season. Well, All-Star Weekend in Cleveland is off to a strong start as Team Barry wins the Clorox Rookie Challenge 25-20 on Wagner's free throw. Isaac Okoro made 6 combined points in both games and Evan Mobley hit 18 points and 11 rebounds.

All-Star Weekend in Cleveland got off to a stellar start on Friday night.

In the Clorox Rising Stars game, in its first year under a new format, Team Barry – featuring a pair of Cavaliers – were crowned the event’s champs, with both contributing on both ends in the back-to-back victories.

(And for some local icing on the cake – a former Ohio State Buckeye hit the game-winning bucket in Team Barry’s initial win just hours after Cleveland Browns All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett put on a dunk-fest in the Ruffles Celebrity Game at the Wolstein Center.)

Rookie Evan Mobley and sophomore Isaac Okoro were both rock-solid in the Rookie Challenge, which went to a format in which teams tried to reach a target score – the opening round up to 50, the championship round to 25.

"I think it was a great experience, I just came out here trying to have fun,” said Mobley, who leads his rookie class in field goal percentage, blocks and rebounding. “It was just fun coming out here and showing out in front of the home crowd.”

In the first game of the night, Team Worthy had a two-possession lead, but struggled to close the deal at the stripe, with Jalen Suggs missing a free throw to open the door. On the other end, Memphis’ Desmond Bane drilled two free throws to complete the comeback – setting up the showdown against Team Barry and the young Cavalier duo.

In the matchup between Team Barry and Team Isaiah, Mobley scored eight of his squad’s first 12 points – all on dunks – and proceeded to tie teammate Cade Cunningham with a game-high 13 points and led both teams with eight rebounds. Isaac Okoro chipped in with six points of his own.

That game also came down the final possession – with former Buckeye and current Rockets sophomore Jae’Sean Tate scoring on a diving layup to seal the 50-48 victory.

In the title game, Team Barry trailed 20-18 before scoring the game’s final five points for the win – with Orlando’s Franz Wagner drilling a free throw to ice the affair, 25-20.

”Once we saw our team, we knew we were going to win this thing,” smiled Okoro afterwards. “We had the best build overall as a team, so we knew if we locked in we’d win the game.”

Detroit’s Cunningham – the top pick in this past summer’s Draft – was named the MVP of the Challenge – combining for 18 points and nine assists in both contests.

In the championship game, Mobley finished with five points, three boards an assist and a blocked shot while Okoro went scoreless with a pair of helpers in the win.

Mobley will be back in action on Saturday night – taking part in the Taco Bell Skills Challenge alongside teammates Darius Garland and Jarrett Allen – each of whom will also suit up for the Eastern Conference All-Star squad on Sunday night and both seated courtside on Friday night at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

CLEVELAND – The NBA announced today that Cavaliers center Jarrett Allen has been named by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to replace injured Philadelphia 76ers guard James Harden on Team LeBron in the 2022 NBA All-Star Game. This marks the first NBA All-Star selection for Allen, who will join Cavaliers guard Darius Garland as a reserve on Team LeBron, and is the 10th time in franchise history that at least two Cavs players have been selected for the event (1972, 1989, 1992, 1993, 2005, 2009, 2015, 2017, 2018). The 71st NBA All-Star Game will be played on Sunday, Feb. 20 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, home of the Cavaliers. The matchup between Team Durant and Team LeBron will air live at 8 p.m. ET on TNT and ESPN Radio in the United States and reach fans in 215 countries and territories in 59 languages.

Allen (6-11, 248) has appeared in 49 games (all starts) for the Cavaliers this season and is averaging career highs in points (16.2), rebounds (11.1), assists (1.8), steals (0.76) and minutes (32.6). The 6-11 center has the second-highest field goal percentage in the NBA at .665, which is on pace to become the best shooting mark for a single season in franchise history (min. 100 attempts). Allen also ranks among the NBA’s Top 15 in rebounds (ninth), blocks (13th, 1.35) and double-doubles (tied-sixth, 30) and is one of only four NBA players averaging at least 15.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 1.3 blocks this season, along with NBA All-Stars Rudy Gobert, Giannis Antetokounmpo and Joel Embiid.

Playing in his fifth NBA season, Allen won his first career Eastern Conference Player of the Week award for Nov. 1-7, the first Cavalier to earn the honor since LeBron James in March 2018, and his 10 games of at least 15 points and 15 rebounds are tied for the fourth-most in the NBA. Allen’s three highest scoring efforts of his NBA career have all come this season, including a 29-point, 22-rebound performance in a win at Charlotte on Feb. 4, when he became just the 12th different player in franchise history to record at least 20 points and 20 rebounds in a single game. The University of Texas product has already tied his career high for double-doubles in a season (30 in 2019-20) and has shot perfect from the field on four occasions. In the season opener on Oct. 20 at Memphis, Allen went 11-of-11 from the field for 25 points, becoming the first NBA player in the shot clock era (since 1954) to shoot perfect on 10 field goal attempts or more in a team’s first game.

Allen will also participate alongside Garland and Evan Mobley in the Taco Bell Skills Challenge at State Farm All-Star Saturday Night on Feb. 19. The Cavaliers currently sit at 35-22 (.614) on the season, the third-best mark in the Eastern Conference, and have posted the NBA’s largest increase in win percentage from last season by .308 (.306, 22-50 in 2020-21).

Jarrett Allen Named All-Star Reserve for 2022 NBA All-Star Game in Cleveland

NEW YORK, Feb. 11, 2022 – As part of NBA All-Star 2022, the NBA and National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) will work alongside local community organizations to provide programming and support that focus on youth, education, health equity, food insecurity and economic inclusion.  Additionally, building off the success of NBA All-Star 2021, the league will again uplift the HBCU community as part of the weekend and empower the next generation of leaders.  More than $3 million will be contributed to the Greater Cleveland and HBCU communities through these combined efforts.

NBA All-Star Game Greater Cleveland-Based Beneficiaries – As part of the NBA All-Star Game format, every quarter will count to support two Northeast Ohio organizations, with Team Durant playing for the Greater Cleveland Food Bank and Team LeBron playing for Kent State University I Promise Scholars Program.  Additionally, throughout the past six seasons, the NBA and State Farm® have helped turn on-court assists into off-court assists in communities around the country through the State Farm Assist Tracker.  For NBA All-Star 2022, the NBA and State Farm® will donate $1,900 for every assist made during the game, with the total amount split between the two-Cleveland based beneficiaries.  The Kent State I Promise Scholars Program provides higher education opportunities and wrap around support for underserved I Promise students in Northeast Ohio, while the Greater Cleveland Food Bank is the largest hunger relief organization in Northeast Ohio annually serving more than 400,000 people and providing life-saving food benefits to those in need.  In total, nearly $1 million will be donated to both organizations.

2,000th NBA Cares Live, Learn or Play Center – In celebration of the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Season and in partnership with Kaiser Permanente, the league will continue its mission to use the power of basketball to create a lasting impact in communities globally through the NBA 75th Live, Learn or Play Initiative announced in December.  As part of the initiative, the NBA will dedicate its 2,000th Live, Learn or Play center at the Cudell Recreation Center in Cleveland on Feb. 18.  The NBA and Kaiser Permanente will also create a second Live, Learn or Play Center at the King Kennedy Boys &amp; Girls Club, where a refurbished basketball court and new wellness space will be dedicated in the spring.

NBPA Foundation Legacy Grants – The National Basketball Players Association Foundation will improve access to youth sports for school-aged children in the Greater Cleveland area, including through grants to Playworks and Boys &amp; Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio.  Additionally, the Foundation will continue its support of local civic engagement programs in Cleveland through grants to Cleveland Votes and The FreedomBLOC.

HBCU Classic and Initiatives – As previously announced, on Saturday, Feb. 19, the Howard University and Morgan State University men’s basketball teams will face off in the first-ever NBA HBCU Classic presented by AT&amp;T at 2 p.m. ET at the Wolstein Center, which will be simulcast on TNT, ESPN2 and NBA TV.  As part of the NBA’s and AT&amp;T’s respective ongoing commitments to HBCUs, they will donate $100,000 to each school,
totaling $200,000, to support the student experience.  Following the HBCU Classic, both teams will meet with NBA league and team executives and participate in programming regarding professional development, networking and the impact of HBCUs on society.

All-Star will also feature additional storytelling content, career development opportunities, special performances and financial contributions to support HBCU students and alumni.  Ten local HBCU college students will serve as NBA interns throughout the weekend as part of the HBCU Event Shadow: All-Star program, working alongside a variety of league office departments to learn how each contributes to the planning and execution of the weekend’s events.  The NBA will commission and showcase student artists from Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio, who have created original art compositions centered around their HBCU experience and sports.  The art will be displayed during All-Star at Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse, the Wolstein Center and in NBA player hotels.

In continued support of scholarships and other resources for HBCU students, the NBA Foundation will make grants of $250,000 each to the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and UNCF (United Negro College Fund.)  Todate, the Foundation has provided $1.5 million in grants to nonprofit organizations supporting the greater Cleveland community.  As part of its newest round of funding, the Foundation will award new grants totaling $1.3 million to the Greater Cleveland Partnership, NeoSTEM’s Envision Excellence in STEM Education, The Presidents’ Council Foundation and Youth Opportunities Unlimited, and renewed grant funding for the Marcus Graham Project originally awarded in 2020.  The Foundation has also made investments in Cleveland branches of City Year, the National Urban League and the National Black MBA Association.

14th NBA Cares All-Star Day of Service – Volunteers across the NBA family will also participate in the 14th Annual NBA Cares All-Star Day of Service presented by Nike, SAP and State Farm on Feb. 18.  They will sort and pack food donations at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank and gently used books with the Kids’ Book Bank Cleveland to support thousands of children, seniors, families and other individuals in need.

COVID-19 Education, Incentives and Resources – Together with the Cleveland Cavaliers, the NBA is also supporting Mayor Justin Bibb’s citywide efforts to encourage vaccination, boosters and health education by providing incentives for those who receive a COVID-19 vaccine or booster shot at vaccine sites throughout the city, including tickets to All-Star events and Cavaliers games, merchandise, special autographed items and more.  The league will also support city-wide vaccination and testing efforts through additional vaccination locations, donating 10,000 rapid antigen tests and 110,000 face masks to the COVID-19 Taskforce for distribution to schools and community-based organizations.  A $100,000 donation will also be made to the Funders Collaborative on COVID Recovery, a partnership that includes nearly 50 philanthropic foundations, nonprofits, and government entities, to help support the community as it recovers from the economic and social impacts of COVID-19.

NBA All-Star Rewards Program – With a focus on economic inclusion and supporting the city’s recovery efforts from the ongoing effects of the pandemic, the NBA has included more than 130 diverse-owned businesses as part of the NBA All-Star Rewards Program.  Launched in August, the program encourages fans to patronize locally owned restaurants and retail businesses for the chance to win tickets to attend All-Star events and other exclusive prizes.  Additionally, the NBA has engaged more than 30 women-, minority- and LGBTQowned businesses through its Supplier Diversity Program that will help bring NBA All-Star to life as vendors.

Jr. NBA Programming – In the week leading up to the All-Star Game, the Jr. NBA and Cavaliers will host a variety of virtual programming for local children and youth basketball coaches.  NBA Rising Stars, WNBA players and Jr. NBA coaches will teach basketball skills and address mental performance topics during two virtual gym classes for Cleveland public school students.  The Jr. NBA will also lead a virtual workshop that will include on-court instructional resources as well as a session with NBA Mind Health Director Dr. Kensa Gunter to help youth basketball coaches build communities of support within their teams and encourage mindbody connection among youth.

The NBA will also work with the Cavaliers and additional partners, including KultureCity and South Pole, to make All-Star inclusive, accessible and environmentally responsible.
