Raise your hand if you knew that the Orlando Magic won the East’s Southwest Division last year.

Steve Clifford brought instant success to the Magic Kingdom, taking a squad that hadn’t won more than 35 games in the past six seasons back to the Playoffs. Despite the gentleman’s sweep at the hands of the eventual World Champs, there’s plenty of optimism in Orlando. They re-signed All-Star center Nikola Vucevic and Terrance Ross, saw Aaron Gordon take another step forward and drafted burly Auburn forward Chuma Ukeke.

If Markelle Fultz can somehow find his game, the Magic could make some noise in the East.

With a knee injury limiting the previous season’s Most Improved Player, Victor Oladipo, to just 36 games, the Pacers' big plans were submarined midway through the campaign. They still won 48 games and reached the Playoffs, but weren’t much of a factor when they got there.

They’ve retooled the roster – losing Thaddeus Young, Cory Joseph and Bojan Bogdanovic via free agency, but made separate deals for Malcolm Brogdon and T.J. Warren while inking Jeremy Lamb and T.J. McConnell as free agents. With the 18th pick in the Draft, they snagged international big, Goga Bitadze.

With Giannis Antetokounmpo’s personal ascension complete, it’s time for the reigning MVP to take his team to the next level in the postseason.

The Greek Freak led Milwaukee to a league-best 60 wins last year, but they were eliminated in six games by Toronto in the Conference Finals. Khris Middleton stayed put and the Bucks stayed relatively quiet in the offseason, adding Robin Lopez and Kyle Korver, but basically choosing to roll with the East’s top squad.

The loss of Malcolm Brogdon hurts, but Milwaukee picked up some valuable trade chips to make a move later this season if necessary.

Like the Cavaliers, the Bulls are building a young foundation through the Draft. After hitting on Lauri Markkanen and Wendell Carter Jr. in successive seasons, Chicago hopes it strikes gold again with blazing North Carolina guard Coby White, whom they tabbed with the 7th overall pick this past June.

If White works out, pairing him with Zach LaVine would give the Bulls one of the more dynamic young backcourts in the Conference.

The Bulls didn’t do much in free agency this summer aside from signing solid veteran forward Thaddeus Young away from Indiana.

Maverick fans are understandably excited for the upcoming season – and not just because the team inked Boban Marjanovic over the summer.

Dallas – about to play its first season sans Dirk since 1998 – rolled the dice big-time in the 2018 Draft, swinging a deal with Atlanta to move up and select Luka Doncic. The move paid off perfectly for both squads, and Rick Carlisle’s club looks to pair the reigning Rookie of the Year along with All-Star forward/unicorn Kristaps Porzingis, who hasn’t played an NBA game since February 2018.

The Kyrie Irving Experience has come and gone in Beantown, but the Celtics have no intention of taking a step back because of Uncle Drew’s exodus.

In fact, the addition of Kemba Walker could make Boston even more dangerous moving forward. The Celtics definitely took some losses this summer – with Al Horford, Terry Rozier and Marcus Morris also bolting Boston.

But Danny Ainge had another bountiful Draft night – tabbing Romeo Langford, Grant Williams and Carsen Edwards with his first three picks. Enes Kanter fills the void left by Horford and Aron Baynes (who was dealt to Phoenix) as Brad Stevens tries to finally get Boston over the hump in the East.

After reaching the Playoffs in four of the previous five seasons, the Wizards – who lost John Wall to a season-ending Achilles injury – won only 32 games last year. They made a slew of moves in the offseason, it’s just not clear if any of them will make Washington any more competitive this year than they were in 2018-19.

Bradley Beal had a career year, averaging 25.6 ppg and playing in all 82 games, but there weren’t many bright spots in the nation’s capital last year. Washington added some offensive firepower with former Cavaliers C.J. Miles and Isaiah Thomas, but lost Jeff Green, Trevor Ariza and Bobby Portis.

Despite Knicks fans’ apocalyptic reaction to the free agent bonanza this past July, the Knicks haven’t done a bad job remaking the roster. They missed out on the big names, but still picked up some tough, competitive players like Julius Randle, Taj Gibson and Bobby Portis.

And despite not bringing in the marquee monikers, the Knicks have a nice young core brewing – especially if the 3rd overall pick from this past June, R.J. Barrett, lives up to his billing. Pairing Barrett with Kevin Knox, the Draft’s youngest player a year ago, along with shot-blocking phenom Mitchell Robinson might give New York a better squad than some expect.

If Kawhi Leonard’s rim-rattler had rolled out in Game 7 of last year’s Eastern Conference Semis, we might be talking about how the Sixers dethroned Golden State last June. Instead, the Process continues as Philly looks to win a wide-open East.

The Jimmy Butler experiment came and went as Philly stayed active this offseason – dealing Butler to Miami in exchange for Josh Richardson and inking Al Horford to a free agent deal.

The Sixers also kept Tobias Harris in the fold, giving them all the ammo they’ll need to make a run at the Conference title.

As usual, the Heat didn’t make many offseason moves, but this summer they made a big one – replacing the retired Dwyane Wade with four-time All-Star Jimmy Butler, who lands in Miami after unsuccessful stints with Minnesota and Philly.

The Heat sent Josh Richardson to the Sixers and Hassan Whiteside was shipped to Portland in a separate deal. Miami won 39 games last year and failed to reach the postseason for the third time in the last five years. Only time will tell if the addition of Butler will mean more wins.

With the Warriors in recession, there are plenty of squads eagerly vying to claim the top spot – and the Blazers are one of them.

Portland had a great postseason run a year ago, blowing by OKC and topping the Nuggets in seven dramatic games before being swept out of the Conference Finals by Golden State. This summer, the Blazers locked up Damian Lillard, got more beef up front with Hassan Whiteside and Pau Gasol and saw North Carolina’s Nassir Little fall into their laps at No. 25 this past June.

As long as Portland has Lillard and C.J. McCollum in their backcourt, they’ll be a threat to win it all.

Remember when Boston fleeced Brooklyn so badly that it seemed the Nets would be lost for a generation? These days, Brooklyn’s got every bit as much hope to take the East as the Celtics.

The two teams are still closely linked – with a disgruntled Kyrie Irving bolting Beantown for Brooklyn and Kevin Durant joining him (when he returns from an Achilles injury). Already with an impressive young roster that includes Jarrett Allen, Joe Harris, Spencer Dinwiddie and Caris Lavert, the Nets also added DeAndre Jordan, Wilson Chandler and Garrett Temple to the mix.

Blake Griffin put up a heroic postseason performance last year, battling injury to post a tremendous First Round series against Milwaukee, but once again Detroit was swept out of the Playoffs before winning a game.

Since 2008-09, the Pistons have reached the postseason just three times and they’ve won a total of zero games in those appearances. Detroit has been in NBA limbo for some time now, and they didn’t make any jaw-dropping offseason moves to move the needle much this summer – inking Derrick Rose and tabbing Sekou Doumbouya with the 15th overall pick this past June.

Chris Paul is out; Russell Westbrook is in as the Rockets reload once again, trying to finally break through in the West and reach the Finals for the first time since 1995.

Last spring, Houston got bounced by the Warriors for the fourth time in the last five years, so Daryl Morey and Co. swung for the fences, aligning a pair of MVP candidates despite the steep price. The Rockets filled in the roster with some interesting pieces, including Tyson Chandler and the former No. 1 overall pick in the Draft, Anthony Bennett.

No telling how the Rockets will fare this year and into the postseason, but they’ll definitely be one of the most entertaining squads on the floor and off.

We mentioned that there are plenty of teams prepared to challenge for the Western Conference crown. But for a change, San Antonio is not quite in that picture. Anything can happen, but the Spurs are nowhere near the heavyweight they’ve been over the past quarter century.

DeMar DeRozan leads a group of solid young vets, but San Antonio was relatively quiet in the offseason – drafting Luka Samanic and Keldon Johnson in the first round and making a pair of minor acquisitions in DeMarre Carroll and Trey Lyles.

The Raptors shocked the world last June, knocking off an NBA dynasty after rolling the dice on the previous offseason’s most ambitious trade. But Kawhi Leonard bolted for the coast not long afterwards and the Raptors are left to cobble things back together.

They’re not exactly starting from scratch – bringing back Kyle Lowry, Pascal Siakam and Fred VanVleet. But the Raptors aren’t in the conversation for the Conference title like they’ve been in the past.

With Kemba Walker – the franchise’s all-time leading scorer – leaving Charlotte via a sign-and-trade with the Celts, it’s uncertain what the Hornets direction will be moving forward. Terry Rozier will run the point, but he’s not in the same class as Kemba. The Hornets drafted P.J. Washington with the 12th overall pick, but were otherwise quiet over the summer.

They could be in for a complete rebuild down on Tobacco Road.

These aren’t the Grindhouse Grizzlies anymore, with one of the Draft’s most electrifying prospects – Ja Morant – taking over the point in Memphis. At No. 21, Gonzaga’s Brandon Clarke was considered a steal Jaren Jackson Jr. was outstanding before his rookie season was cut short and there’s reason once again for optimism at the FedEx Forum.

But the Grizz weren’t done after Draft night – shipping Mike Conley to Utah in exchange for Jae Crowder, Grayson Allen and picks, while dealing for Josh Jackson, Andre Iguodala and Dwight Howard.

The Hawks looked like a franchise on life support just a few years ago. But things are looking way up in Atlanta after a pair of big Draft nights – set up last June with the deal to acquire Trae Young and the Mavericks’ first rounder this year.

Young had a prolific rookie campaign and that 2019 pick turned out to be Cam Reddish. Add this year’s first rounder, Virginia’s two-way standout DeAndre Hunter – along with offseason deals to acquire Chandler Parsons, Evan Turner and Allen Crabbe – and it’s easy to see that the Hawks have something brewing in the Dirty South.

Just when it looked like the Timberwolves were set to break through in the West, things have come off the rails again – with Minnesota still trying to surround Karl Anthony-Towns with the talent to take them to the next level.

Minnesota is still waiting for Andrew Wiggins to live up to expectations and Minnesota doesn’t have much to show for the Jimmy Butler trade. The Timberwolves took the versatile Jarrett Culver with the 6th overall pick via a trade with Phoenix, but it still might not be enough to make a dent in the loaded Western Conference.

Sometimes, it’s amazing that the small-market Thunder were able to hold out as long as they were. But this offseason, the exodus of Paul George sent the dominoes tumbling, with former MVP Russell Westbrook joining George out the door.

The Thunder landed Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chris Paul, Danilo Gallinari and a boatload of draft picks in the separate deals, but it’ll be a while before they’re ready to challenge for the Conference crown again.

The Nuggets built their team the right way – patiently, with homegrown talent and shrewd trades. They finished second in the West with 54 wins and reached the Conference Semis before being bounced.

They return legitimate MVP candidate Nikola Jokic and are loaded across the roster – with Gary Harris, Jamal Murray and Paul Millsap rounding things out.

The Nuggets also drafted Michael Porter Jr. a season ago and he’ll join this year’s selection, Bol Bol – who fell to the 44th pick – as they continue the building process.

After tipping off the previous two seasons at home, the Cavaliers started out north with a pair last season – traveling to Toronto and Minnesota. This year, the new-look Wine &amp; Gold begin the campaign away again, heading to the Sunshine State to take on Aaron Gordon, Nikola Vucevic and the up-and-coming Magic on Oct. 23.

Cleveland returns for what should be an incredible night as fans get their first look at the renovated state-of-the-art Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse three nights later, welcoming the heavyweight Pacers to town for an 8 p.m. start on Saturday, Oct. 26. The next three games are all Divisional opponents – including a quick rematch with Victor Oladipo and Co. the following Friday in Indy.

After starting and wrapping up the schedule about a week earlier last year – (Cleveland opened on Oct. 18, finished on April 9) – things are closer to normal this season, with the Cavs regular season closing out on Tax Day – April 15 – on the road against Atlanta. The last time the Wine &amp; Gold didn’t complete the campaign at home was the 2012-13 season when they closed out in Charlotte against the then-Bobcats.

With the season closing out on the road, Fan Appreciation Night will be two nights earlier – Monday, April 13 – against Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets.

As they have over the past couple seasons, the Cavaliers will have their West Coast trip(s) split in half – and they’re both gonna be a bear.

After a nice four-game homestand to start the 2020 New Year, the Wine &amp; Gold embark on a six-game, 11-day West Coast junket bracketed by a pair of Central Division matchups. On Jan. 9, the Cavs travel to face the Pistons in Motown, then head west for matchups beginning with the Nuggets, then on to a back-to-back against the Lakers and Clippers and wrapping up with a back-to-back against Memphis and Chicago.

And as Cleveland did a season ago, it’s a late-campaign sojourn out West – facing off against the Jazz in Utah on April with stops in Phoenix and Sacramento before closing out with a brutal back-to-back against Portland and Golden State on April 7th and 8th.

The Cavaliers had been Christmas Day staples for several seasons, but this year the Wine &amp; Gold doesn’t play on Christmas, will be home for Christmas.

Cleveland welcomes the Magic to Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse on the night before Thanksgiving on Nov. 27 and will be north of the border on New Year’s Eve, taking on the World Champion Raptors.

On Martin Luther King Day – January 20 – the Cavaliers welcome the Knicks to town for a 5 p.m. contest. The Wine &amp; Gold are off on Easter Sunday (April 12). And this year’s All-Star Game will be played in the Windy City on Feb. 16.

John Beilein’s squad has some tough road stretches – including the final trip to end the campaign.  But there are some nice stretches on the North Coast where the squad can make some hay.

The Cavs have three, three-game homestands before the holidays – including a late-December trifecta against Charlotte, Memphis and Atlanta.

The young Cavaliers have a nice month at home in February – playing seven of their 11 contests at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse – and will get a much-needed break around All-Star Weekend, with their final game before the Break at home against Atlanta on Feb. 12 and their first game back after the midseason classic on the road against Washington on Feb. 21.

Cleveland gets a five-game homestand to end the month of February and welcome in March, but they close out the campaign with a vicious final month – playing six of April’s final eight games on the road, including a five-game, nine-day trip out West.

There’s a new big dog in the East, but that might be a short stay at the top for Toronto, which went all-in for Kawhi Leonard. The gamble paid off, but with the Klaw’s departure, the Conference is once again wide open.

The Cavs open their new-and-improved home arena with one of the true contenders when the Pacers roll in on Oct. 26. They get their first look at the league’s reining MVP, traveling to face the Greek Freak two nights later.

The Atlantic Division should be a dogfight this season and Cleveland faces their heavy hitters early – taking on the Sixers three times in the first quarter of the campaign alone. The Cavs face Boston three times before the new year and once more in March. If Kyrie Irving makes the trip to Cleveland with his team, the Nets first appearance at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse is November 25.

Despite the Raptors hold on the Larry O’Brien Trophy, the league’s power leans heavily West – with both big and small market squads vying to bring back the title.

Kawhi, Paul George and the Clippers make their lone trip to Cleveland just before the Break (Feb. 9) and, after visiting just before Thanksgiving last year, our old friend LeBron James and his new running mate Anthony Davis bring the LakeShow to town late (March 26) this season. The Cavs take both L.A. squads on in a mid-January back-to-back at STAPLES Center.

The Warriors come to town for a Saturday night showdown on Feb. 1; the Rockets roll in for a mid-December showdown and Mike Malone’s resurgent Nuggets come to town near the end of a five-game homestand in early March.

Now we know when the super-duos are coming to town – LeBron and Anthony Davis in late-March, the Beard and Russ on December 11 and the Klaw and PG in early February.

But that doesn’t mention any of the big-name rookies that come to town – like Zion Williamson and the Pelicans on January 28, Ja Morant and the Grizzlies on December 20, and R.J. Barrett, who makes his Cleveland debut on MLK Day.

The reigning Rookie of the Year, Luka Doncic, rolls in with Kristaps Porzingis and the Mavs on Nov. 3; Damian Lillard, C.J. McCollum and the Blazers come to town on Nov. 23; Trae Young and the rejuvenated Hawks make their first Cleveland appearance on Dec. 23.

The Cavaliers will play most Eastern Conference squads four times, including all four Central Division rivals, but they’ll only face Toronto, Boston, Charlotte and Brooklyn three times each.

They start out with a nice balance, playing four of their first seven at home, but play just three of their final 10 in Cleveland – including a rough West Coast trip. Overall, just five of the Wine &amp; Gold’s final 18 games are at home.

John Beilein’s young guns will play 14 back-to-backs this season – three home-road sets, three road-home sets, two home-home sets and six road sets. Once again, the Cavaliers are just above the league average in back-to-backs.

Fans can catch the Cavaliers on the weekend 36 times this campaign – including 12 Friday games, 17 Saturday contests and seven Sunday affairs. Cleveland also gets three of matinee games this season – versus Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons and the Sixers on Sunday, Nov. 17 at 3 p.m. ET., against the Boston Celtics at 4 p.m. ET on Dec. 27 and then squaring off against the Knicks at 5 p.m. ET on MLK Day.

The Cavaliers are just over the average for Saturday and Sunday games.

The overall breakdown in weekday games are 14 Monday, 11 Tuesday, 13 Wednesday and eight on Thursday night.

The NBA breaks down a team’s travel schedule into three categories: Fresh, Tired and Even.

A team is "Fresh" if it did not play the day before and its opponent did, is "Tired" if it played the day before and its opponent did not and "Even" is if team and its opponent both played or both did not play the day before.

The Cavaliers will play nine road games "Fresh", 10 road games "Tired" and 63 games "Even".

The Wine &amp; Gold will journey the league minimum when it comes to miles logged. Unlike weary travelers like Boston, Miami and Portland, the Cavs will put on just approximately 36,660 miles this season (with the league max being 50,738).

CLEVELAND – The Cleveland Cavaliers home opener at the newly transformed Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse will take place on Saturday, Oct. 26 versus the Indiana Pacers at 8:00 p.m. ET. The Cavaliers will open the 2019-20 campaign and the team’s celebratory 50th season on the road against the Orlando Magic on Wednesday, Oct. 23, marking the second consecutive year that Cleveland will tip off the season on the road and just the fourth time in the past 16 seasons. The Cavaliers are slated to host 16 home weekend games comprised of three Friday games, eight Saturday games and five Sunday games.

Highlights of the home schedule include a visit from the world champion Toronto Raptors on Jan. 30, a matchup with the Western Conference champion Golden State Warriors on Feb. 1, a special Martin Luther King Jr. Day matinee game against the New York Knicks on Jan. 20, a Sunday contest versus the Philadelphia 76ers on Nov. 17 and two games each versus the Milwaukee Bucks (Nov. 29 and April 11) and Boston Celtics (Nov. 5 and March 4). Cleveland will make one national television appearance on ESPN on Friday, Nov. 8 at Washington.

Additional marquee opponents coming to Cleveland only once this season include the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday, Nov. 23, the Houston Rockets on Wednesday, Dec. 11, the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday, Feb. 9 and the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday, March 26.

Cleveland will match up against each Eastern Conference opponent four times with the exception of Brooklyn (two home, one road), Charlotte (two home, one road), Toronto (one home, two road) and Washington (one home, two road). Each Western Conference opponent will play the Cavaliers twice – once at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse and once on the road.

FOX Sports Ohio will broadcast all 82 of Cleveland’s regular season games on television, including the Friday, Nov. 8 matchup at Washington, which will also be carried on ESPN. All 82 Cavs games will again be broadcast on flagship radio stations WTAM 1100, FM 100.7 WMMS and the Cavaliers Radio Network, as well as La Mega 87.7 FM (Spanish).

Other ‘stats’ on Cleveland’s 2019-20 schedule include:

Single game tickets for all 41 regular season home games and two preseason home games of the Cavs 50th season at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse will go on sale to the general public on Friday, August 16th at 10 a.m. at Cavs.com/tickets or at any one of Discount Drug Mart’s 60 northern Ohio locations. There is a six (6) ticket limit per person per game (no game limit). Tickets will be distributed through Flash Seats, the Cavs official electronic ticketing platform. The Flash Seats and StubHub secondary marketplaces will also open at 10 a.m. on August 16th.

Throughout the 50th season, fans will have the opportunity to take a trip down memory lane as the team celebrates the past and looks to the future of Cleveland Cavaliers basketball. The centerpiece of the Cavs 50th Season Celebration will be “Era Nights”, themed home games dedicated to honoring five periods of Cavaliers basketball. Each “Era Night” will feature exclusive giveaways, unique content and activities, in-game moments, special reunions and more – all to pay homage to the history and journey of the Cavaliers franchise over the past 50 seasons.

The Cavaliers 50th season promotional giveaway and theme night schedule including fan-favorite giveaways and exciting “Era Nights” will be released at a later date.
