Rip City's Scoreboard Watching Guide

The final day of the 2014-15 regular season is upon us, and, as was the case yesterday, the Trail Blazers' first round opponent is still undecided.

However, with the LA Clippers' 112-101 win last night, the number of permutations to determine the Trail Blazers opponent has been cut from 16 to eight.

Here's an easy rule of elimination to get things started: If San Antonio wins its game against New Orleans tonight, Portland will not face the defending NBA champions in the first round, regardless of the other teams' outcomes.

Another sure-thing: If Houston and San Antonio both win tonight, Portland's first round opponent will be the Houston Rockets.

Lucky for the scoreboard watchers, Portland, Houston and San Antonio all tip-off their respective games at the same tonight (5 pm Pacific). So by the conclusion of those three games, the Trail Blazers' first round opponent may be set in stone.

And that's where things get a little more complicated.

If Houston and San Antonio split their games, or if both lose, Rip City will have to wait for the conclusion of Memphis' game with the Indiana Pacers (which tips off at 6:30 pm Pacific) to learn its first round opponent.

If it comes down to the Memphis game, here's how it lays out:

  • Any combination of Spurs + Rockets W/L + Grizzlies win = Memphis
  • Rockets win + Spurs loss + Grizzlies loss = San Antonio
  • Rockets loss + Spurs win + Grizzlies loss = Houston
  • Rockets loss + Spurs loss + Grizzlies loss = Houston
