Trent was born in Columbus, Ohio in 1999. He is the son of former NBA first-round pick Gary Trent Sr., who also played multiple seasons of his career in Portland. Trent had always been considered an elite prospect early on while attending Apple Valley High School in Minnesota before transferring to Prolific Prep Academy in Napa, California, where he averaged 31.8 points per game as a senior. He was rated as a consensus five-star prospect entering his lone season at Duke, and was selected by the Kings in the second round of the 2018 Draft. Trent has three brothers named Garyson, Grayson and Graydon. Follow Trent on Instagram at @gtrentjr. A highly regarded recruit out of high school, Trent spent one season at Duke in 2017-18. He averaged 14.5 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.2 steals for the Blue Devils, starting all 37 games. Trent shot 41.5 percent from the field, including 40.2 percent from beyond the arc. He ranked third on the team in scoring and set a Duke freshman record with 97 made three-pointers. Trent scored in double-figures in 23 of his final 27 contests and was named to the NCAA Tournament All-Midwest Region Team. In four NCAA Tournament games, he averaged 16.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.0 made threes per contest. In his final outing, Trent went 5-of-8 from beyond the arc in Duke's loss to Kansas in the Elite Eight.
