Player Bio

Carter was born in 1995 in Maywood, Illinois to parents Leroy Carter and Cynthia Johnson. He has four siblings -- Briana Johnson, Daren Carter, Kalin Fisher and Cameron Carter. Carter attended Proviso East High School in his hometown of Maywood, averaging 22 points per game his senior year. In his youth, he also played AAU basketball with future NBA guard Jalen Brunson. As a three-star recruit, Carter elected to attend West Virginia, where he majored in sports management. Carter was the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year in his junior (2016-17) and senior (2017-18) seasons. He was also named to the 17-18 All-Big 12 First Team. Carter led the Big 12 in steals for all four of his seasons at West Virginia. The Maywood, Illinois native led the Big 12 in steals per game in the 2016-17 (2.5) and 2017-18 seasons (3.0). Carter collected the second-most field goals (215) in the Big 12 in 17-18, his senior year. He collected the third-most points (640) in the conference during his senior season. Carter was fourth in the Big 12 during the 17-18 campaign in points per game (17.3) and free-throw percentage (.858). He was selected the 2018 All-Big 12 Tournament Team. Carter helped lead West Virginia to the '18 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. He was selected in the second round (32nd overall) in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Memphis Grizzlies.
