Edmond Byron Sumner was born in 1995 in Beverly Hills, Michigan. He is the son of Ernest and Felicia and has two siblings, Shanequa and Ernest Jr. Sumner played high school ball at Detroit Country Day School. While at DCD, Sumner led the team to a state title, two regional championships and three district championships. He also reached the 1,000-point club in high school. While playing collegiate ball at Xavier University, Sumner studied computer science. Edmond Sumner spent three years (2014-2017) at Xavier University, playing in a combined 58 games with the Musketeers. Sumner played six games for the Musketeers in his first year at Xavier, averaging 1.3 points and an assist before being granted a medical redshirt due to knee issues. The next year, as a redshirt freshman, Sumner vastly improved his numbers. He started 29 of the 31 games and averaged 11.0 points, 3.6 assists and 1.3 steals per contest. In recognition of his efforts, Sumner was named to the Big East All-Freshman team. The 6-foot-4 guard entered the next season on the Wooden Award Preseason watch list. He backed up the hype. Sumner upped his points per game average to 15.0 and also produced 5.0 assists and 1.3 steals per contest.
