Washington, D.C. –  To celebrate the Wizards’ 25th anniversary since rebranding to the Wizards name, the team has partnered with Coca-Cola Consolidated, the District’s local Coca-Cola bottler, and is collaborating with the non-profit organization Casey Trees to plant 25 trees, including multiple cherry blossom trees, on Wednesday, March 15 from 12:30-4:30 p.m.

The new cherry blossom trees will be planted at the Royal Courts apartments located in Southeast, D.C. The tree planting will be commemorated with a Wizards and Cherry Coke branded park bench made of 100% recycled Coca-Cola bottles.

To celebrate the cherry blossom season and to commemorate the event, DJ Heat, Wizards Dancers, G Wiz and alumni Phil Chenier and Harvey Grant will all be on hand. Wizards radio play-by-play broadcaster Dave Johnson will emcee the ribbon cutting ceremony, and Wizards VP of Player Development and Engagement John Thompson III, a representative from Coca-Cola Consolidated and Royal Courts Manager, architect, developer and general partner Don Tucker will all provide remarks. The Ward 8 community, including all residents of the Royal Courts Apartments, are invited to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony and celebrate with Cherry Coke floats, Wizards giveaways, and more.

According to Casey Trees, tree planting helps with stormwater absorption, clean air and mitigating climate change and heat. For every $1 spent on trees, from planting to maintenance, there is a $2.23 return on investment. Each year, D.C. trees filter 44,274,580 cubic feet of water. This is equal to about 500 Olympic-size pools. In 2022 alone, Casey Trees planted over 5,000 trees throughout the District.

The Wizards’ 2022-23 Cherry Blossom campaign is inspired by the city’s iconic cherry blossoms trees.  In 1912, Japan gifted the cherry blossom trees to the United States which have stood as a symbol of peace and solidarity every year since. The Wizards unveiled their City Edition Cherry Blossom jersey and court earlier this season and throughout the season have executed numerous cherry blossom inspired activations and giveaways.
